Although Keats didnt receive much formal literary education, his own studies and passion brought him much success. Additionally, his own life situation influenced his poetry greatly.Growing up as a young boy in London in a lower middleclass family, the young John didnt attend a private school, but went to a public one. His teachers and his familys friends regarded him as an optimistic boy who favored playing and fighting much more than minding his studies. After his fathers death in the early 1800s, followed by his mothers passing due to tuberculosis(肺结核), he began viewing life differently. He wanted to escape the world and did so by reading anything he could get his hands on.At around the age of 16, the teenage John Keats began studying under a surgeon so that he might become a doctor. However, his literary appetite had taken too much of his time. He was completely addicted to the poetry of Edmund Spenser. He published his first poem in the examiner in 1816, named O solitude! If I Must with Thee Dwell. Within two months in 1817, Keats wrote a volume of poetry, but was sharply criticized by a magazine. However, the negative response didnt stop his pursuit of rhythm.John Keats next work was Endymion, which was published in May 1818. The story involves a boy who falls in love with the moon goddess and leads him on an adventure of one boys hope to overcome the limitations of being human. Following Endymion, he tried something more narrativebased and wrote Isabella. During this time, John Keats began seeing his limitations in poetry due to his own limit in life experiences. He would have to have the “knowledge ” associated with his poems. His next work was Hyperion that would attempt to combine all he learned. However, a bout(发作) with tuberculosis while visiting Italy kept him from his work and eventually took his life in 1821.【解题导语】本文讲述了英国诗人John Keats的生平和作品。1John Keats attitude towards life changed because of _Ahis early education from schoolBthe death of his parentsCEdmund Spensers poetryDthe criticism from a magazineB解析:细节理解题。根据第二段“After his fathers death in the early 1800s, followed by his mothers passing due to tuberculosis(肺结核), he began viewing life differently.” B。2What is the common thing between John Keats and his mother?AThey read many books.BThey had a bad childhood.CThey died of the same disease.DThey showed strong interest in poetry.C解析:细节理解题。根据第二段的“followed by his mothers passing due to tuberculosis(肺结核)”和文章最后一句“a bout(发作) with tuberculosis.eventually took his life in 1821”可知,诗人与母亲死于相同疾病。故选C。3What do we know from the passage?AKeats didnt attend a school.BKeats once had a chance of becoming a doctor.CIn 1816 Keats spent two months writing a poem.DEndymion was about a real love story.B解析:细节理解题。根据第三段第一句话“At around the age of 16, the teenage John Keats began studying under a surgeon so that he might become a doctor.” B。4While pursuing his dream of becoming a poet at first, John Keats was _AdeterminedBexperiencedCknowledgeable DimpatientA解析:推理判断题。从第三段最后一句“However, the negative response didnt stop his pursuit of rhythm.” A。BThe Mayan Indians lived in Mexico for thousands of years. The Maya were so bright that they achieved a lot. They had farms, temples and cities with many buildings. They knew much about nature and the world around them. This knowledge helped them to live a better life than most people of that time.In ancient Mexico there were many small clearings in the forest. In each clearing was a village with fields of crops around it. The Maya planted seeds after they cleared the land. A farmer was able to grow crops that produced for several people. But not every Maya had to be a farmer. Some were builders or priests(祭司)The Maya believed in many gods. They built large temples to honor them. Skillful workers built cities around these temples. It was difficult because they had to carry all of the building materials themselves. Today, many of these ancient Mayan cities and temples are still standing.Although the Maya worked hard to build the beautiful cities, very few of them lived in them. Usually, only the priests lived in the cities. The other people lived in small villages in the forests. Their houses were much simpler. Most Maya lived a simple life close to nature.Around the year 800, the Maya left their villages and beautiful cities, never to return. No one knows why this happened. They may have died from a deadly disease. They may have left because the soil could no longer grow crops. The lost secrets of the Maya are still beyond the reach of modern people. I dont even give it a second thought. In China, its a whole other story! Here, ordering is a fun game of trial and error, and the adventure begins before the food is even served! Many restaurants in central Beijing advertise “Englishlanguage menus”, but the translations can just add to the confusion. Although accompanying pictures can be a helpful relief, the translations often make the whole experience even more amusing. During my first few weeks in China I tried some delicious dishes with strange names. As an experiment, my friends and I would order things like “students addicted to chicken gristle(软骨)” and “red burned lion head”. It was always fun to see what landed on our table. Eventually we learned that “lion head” was actually pork, and “students” are “addicted” to diced(切碎的) chicken with green pepper.Recently, I came across a busy restaurant down a narrow side street in a Beijing hutong. It was lunchtime and the small room was packed with people sitting on small stools eating noodles. I was hungry and cold, and the steaming bowls looked irresistible! I sat myself down and called out for a “caidan”. In response, the waitress pointed to a wall at the back of the restaurant. The wall was full of Chinese characters describing numerous dishes. There was only one sentence in English:“crossing over the bridge noodles”I had never heard of the dish and had no idea what it would taste like. I took a gamble and ordered one bowl of“crossing over the bridge noodles”. A few minutes later the waitress carried over a heavy bowl full of broth(肉汤) and I quickly dug in. It was the best bowl of noodles I had ever tasted! I have been back again and again and each time I point at the one English sentence“crossing over the bridge noodles”. I always enter a restaurant in China feeling excited and a little nervous. Who knows what the next ordering adventure will reveal?【解题导语】本文是一篇记叙文。 9How does the writer find the Englishlanguage menus in many of Beijings restaurants?AConfusing but amusing.BEasy to understand.CBoring and annoying.DAccurate and helpful.A解析:细节理解题。根据第二段中的“.but the translations can just add to the confusion.”和“.the translations often make the whole experience even more amusing.” A。10The underlined word“gamble”in the last paragraph probably means “_”Ataste BlookCstep DriskD解析:词义猜测题。 D。11The passage mainly deals with _Athe authors favorite Chinese dishesBthe fun the author had ordering food in Chinas restaurantsCa comparison between Western food and Chinese foodDthe correct way to translate the names of Chinese dishes into EnglishB解析:主旨大意题。 B。12The passage is developed mainly in the form of _Aexamples and statementsBcomparison and conclusionCcauses and effectsDtime and descriptionA解析:推理判断题。 A。DJohn Smith was a very handsome young man but he was lazy.
