Is that you?” The woman speaking to me at the baseball game looked a little familiar. “Marci?” I asked. “It is you!” she cried out, smiling broadly. “Gosh, its good to see you again!”It was good to see Marci, too. Off and on during the past few decades Ive wondered about her. I almost tried to search for her a few years ago after talking to a friend who had indicated that the 1990s had been pretty rocky for Marci. So meeting her at the baseball game was really out of expectation. We spent a few minutes talking about our lives-the good old, bad old days. Then Marci grew quiet for a moment. “You know, Joe,” she said, “Ive always wanted to tell you. how. how sorry I am for the way I treated you. You must have been hurt both physically and mentally.” I was a little embarrassed. I turned and looked at her. “Its OK,” I said, “no big deal!” “But I was such a jerk,” she continued. Yes you were, I thought. “We were both pretty young,” I smiled. “I know,” she said. “Its just always bothered me, remembering how mean I was to you. And Ive wanted to tell you that Im sorry.” The expression on her face was warm and sincere. And there was something in her eyes-it looked a lot like relief. “OK,” I said. “Apology accepted!” Overe by the sweetness of the moment, I reached an arm around her and gave her a quick hug. Just then, the crowd erupted with a huge cheer, and Marci and I both returned our attention to the game. By the time I looked over to where she had been, she was gone. But the warm, wonderful feeling of our brief exchange was still there, and continues to this day whenever I think about it.It isnt enough to just say “I am sorry” and “You are forgiven”. But when those words are truly felt and sincerely expressed, they can open the door to miracles of the heart. Forgiveness can bring peace to an injured soul-even years after the fact. Even at a baseball game.24. What kind of life did Marci live during the late 20th century according to the passage?A. Happy. B. Hard. C. Busy. D. Simple.25. Because she learned the author was living a good life.27. What might be the best title for the passage? A. Excitement of a Baseball Game B. Relief of Finding a FriendC. Mental Burden of a Woman D. Miracles of Forgiveness CPatients in the early stages of Alzheimers disease often struggle to remember recently learned information, meaning they forget things like important appointments or where they left their keys. But it seems that these memories are not lost. They are still filed away in the brain somewhere; they just cant be easily accessed. Now, researchers at MIT have developed a means of getting back memories in mice suffering from Alzheimers. The method relies on a technique that uses light to control genetically modified neurons (转基因神经元). Currently it is too early to be used in human trials as it involves inserting light emitting (发光) equipment into the subjects brains, but the same principles still apply, the researchers said.“The important point is that this is evidence of the concept. That is, even if a memory seems to be gone, it is still there. Its a matter of how to get it back,” said the senior researcher Susumu Tonegawa. The team took two groups of mice, one genetically engineered to develop Alzheimers and one healthy. They then placed them into a room and gave them a mild electric shock. All of the mice showed fear when put back in an hour later. When placed in the room a third time several days later, the Alzheimers mice acted normally. They had forgotten the shock. The researchers were then able to bring back the memory of the shock by activating (激活) the cells in which the memories were stored. Even when the mice were put into an unfamiliar room, they showed fear when the cells associated with the shock were activated.“Shortterm memories seem to be normal in order of hours. But for longterm memories, these earlyAlzheimers mice seem to be damaged,” said the lead researcher Dheeraj Roy. “Directly activating the cells that we believe are holding the memory helps them get it back. This suggests that it is indeed an access problem to the information, not that they are unable to learn or store this memory.”28. What can we learn about the researchers at MIT?A. They can get back memories in mice with Alzheimers.B. They can cure Alzheimers using the new method.C. They are the pioneers of brain research.D. They have used the method in human trials.29. Why did the Alzheimers mice behave normally the third time?A. They were accustomed to the situation.B. They managed to overe the fear.C. They failed to remember the electric shock.D. They activated the association automatically.30. For longterm memories, the earlyAlzheimers mice _.A. cant learn new tricks well B. can transform their brain cellsC. cant access the information stored D. can easily get back their memories31. Whats the main purpose of the text?A. To introduce a method of a research.B. To explain how a brain stores information.C. To give advice on how to improve memories.D. To report the latest discovery about a disease.DEvery year, billions of kilograms of fresh produce are wasted in the United States. Meanwhile, millions of poor Americans go hungry, without access to healthy, affordable meals.Evan Lutz is enthusiastic about correcting that social injustice. And he bines that goal with enthusiasm for business. Lutz is CEO and founder of Hungry Harvest, a business which collects and sells “ugly” produce. These are fruits and vegetables that most food panies would throw away. More than six billion pounds are wasted each year due to surface imperfections. “So Ill give you an example.” Lutz says, “If you go to a grocery store you will see all the produce line-up shiny, perfect, of the same size and color. But on a farm, everything doesnt grown the same way. So all that stuff that doesnt grow the same way often gets thrown out. And what we do is take all that normally gets thrown out because of its odd size or shape, box it up and deliver it to our customers once a week.” For Evan Lutz, giving back to others came from his upbringing. “When I was growing up my parents taught me the values of giving back, and giving is a lot more powerful than receiving. We sell produce with a purpose and that doesnt just mean we reduce food from going to waste. We hire people that were formerly in prison or were formerly injured or sick living in homeless shelters. They really wanted to get back on their feet for a second chance in life.” Evan Lutz is really happy to be realizing great mission that he thinks can really revolutionize the food industry in America.32. To increase productivity.C. To offer them a job. D. To enjoy a better reputation.35. What can be a suitable title for the passage?A. Giving Unused Produce a PurposeB.
