摘要 摘要 模糊性是自然语言的内在特性，它广泛地存在于人类的交流中。自从古希腊 哲学家尤布利德斯提出“连锁推理悖论”以来，语言中的模糊性开始引起越来 越多的关注。1 9 6 5 年札德的“模糊集”发表后，数学中的模糊概念就被应用于 模糊语言的研究。作为模糊语言的一个重要部分，模糊限制语在口语和书面交流 中起着重要的作用。模糊限制语有助于语言表达并能增强交际效果。恰当地使用 模糊限制语能使表达更灵活、礼貌、委婉而且有效。模糊限制语的概念最初是由 莱可夫于1 9 7 2 年提出的，模糊限制语就是“将事物变得更模糊或较不模糊的词 语”。在英语和汉语中都有各种词汇、句法及语篇模式可以起到模糊限制的功能。 模糊限制属于认识形态的一部分，表明说话者或作者对某命题的真值缺乏明确完 整的许诺，或是不愿意做出许诺。然而模糊限制语在科技论文中的研究一直都被 忽视，可能主要是因为自然科学的研究方法要求客观系统的调查和精确的测量， 这就带来语言表达上的特点。人们总是认为科技论文的特点就是严肃的风格、谨 慎的措词、客观的内容、可靠的证据和逻辑性的推理，因此必须刻意避免模糊手 法的存在。这种片面的观点一直限制着科技学者在写作中对模糊限制语的大胆使 用，一些学者甚至将模糊限制语排除在科技论文之外。 值得庆幸的是，最近的研究表明模糊限制语在科技论文中恰当使用会产生积 极效果。模糊限制语对科学家写作十分重要，因为即使是最真实的科学命题都会 受到时间的挑战，也就是说，科学是不断发展的，新的研究往往会削弱甚至推翻 原有的结论。在这种情况下，对科学发现使用绝对的断言是不明智的，甚至是危 险的。模糊性在世界上普遍存在，模糊性也是语言( 包括口语和书面语) 的内在 特性。既然科技论文也是书面写作的一种文体，那么模糊语言能存在于其中也是 合理正当的。我们经常会发现，学术人员在讨论学术问题时较多使用“我建议” 或“假定”，而较少使用“我知道”或“我肯定”。同样的，学者们更宁愿说“事 物可能是什么情况”而不说“事物一定是什么情况”。布朗和列文森将模糊限制 语作为一种消极礼貌策略进行了讨论，认为模糊限制语是一种“获得同行业人批 准和赞同的”手段。科学家在写作时，一方面必须阐明自己的研究或贡献的重要 性，在另一方面又必须对读者和同行表示谦虚谨慎，目的是为了得到他人的批准 ! ! ! 墅些些坚! ! ! ! ! ! 墅垫! ! 翌坐生塑堕竺 和接受。模糊限制语可以使作者对某些论断表达自己的观点，也能够让作者与听 众或读者进行对话。 作者在回顾近十年国内外相关研究发现，以往学者对模糊限制语在科技论文 中的表现形式及功能上研究得较为零散浅显，从语用学理论的角度对科技论文中 的模糊限制语分析得不够透彻。以往学者还未曾从语用功能的角度去辨证分析模 糊限制语在科技论文中的作用，从礼貌原则角度的研究还有待于进一步完善深 化。本论文是在批判地继承前人研究成果的基础上，采用描述和定性分析的方法， 结合语用学中的合作原则和礼貌原则比较系统全面地对科技论文中模糊限制语 的表现形式及语用功能进行辨证分析。数据主要从国内外权威期刊杂志中的科技 论文中选取，涉及物理、化学、生物、计算机四个具有代表性的自然科学领域。 中文数据来自 中国科学和自然科学进展，英文数据主要来源于海兰德( 1 9 9 8 ) 和美国化学界期刊，部分英文数据来源于专业英语教材中的计算机专业英语 和机械工程专业英语。 本文基于海兰德的分类，详尽分析了科技论文中模糊限制语的存在方式，即 词汇形式、句法形式和语篇形式。词汇形式如情态动词“必须”、“应该”、“可能”、 “将要”等常常表达主观的而且不绝对的意义。认识性的动词、形容词、副词和 名词如“建议”、“表明”、“显示”、“可能”、“也许”、“相对来说”、“本质上”、 “推理”、“暗示”等可以表达作者对命题的真实值是一种估测，而并非百分之百 的确定。一些人称代词在科技论文中有时能起到模糊限制的作用。第一人称复数 “我们”经常出现在科技论文中，然而其所指有点模糊性。第三人称代词经常被 用来指其他的研究人员，有时所指也不确定。一些不定代词可以指任何研究者或 指作者和读者。在实际分析中，所有这些词汇手段都可以被归为科技论文中的 模糊限制语。句法手段如被动语态( 施事者省略) ，无人称主语以及名词化都能 起到让事实说话的功能，这样就拉开了施事者和其所作论断之间的距离，模糊了 二者之间的关系。语篇手段并不是由单个的词汇或句法实现，而是隐含在整个语 篇的语义结构中。通过解释描述介绍某种情形，起到限定结论或命题的效果，通 过提及实验的不足、理论或方法的局限，或知识的不足，作者能够限定许诺或断 言程度。 除了对科技论文中模糊限制语进行分类讨论之外，本论文还从合作原则和礼 v i 摘要 貌原则的角度分析了科技论文中的模糊限制语。从表面看，模糊限制语的使 用是对合作原则中的次则的违反，因为模糊限制语使表述不确定、间接、冗长而 且晦涩。实际上，模糊限制语的使用常是一种合作策略。在有些情况下，说话者违 反某一次则是为了遵守另一次则；又有些情况下，作者故意选择模糊限制语目的是 表达个人对某事实所持的态度或增强表达的灵活性和生动性。 因此从整体上来 看，科技论文中恰当使用模糊限制语是对合作原则的遵守。本论文同时还讨论了 模糊限制语和礼貌原则之间的关系在科技论文中的体现。分别从积极礼貌策略和 消极礼貌策略两个方面讨论了科技论文中的模糊限制语和礼貌的关系。最后本论 文得出结论：在科技论文中，恰当的使用模糊限制语表明作者是合作的，而且能起 到一些积极效果，如使语言更加准确、慎重、灵活，能减轻作者应负的责任，表达作 者的谦虚以及对读者的敬重，然而不恰当的使用模糊限制语会导致一些消极后果，
