摘要 众所周知，没有一个人象艾略特既作为著名诗人、又作为文学批评家， 对现代诗歌影响那么大，并在半个世纪的时间内主导着现代诗歌发展方向。 荒原的发表标志着现代英美诗歌的巅峰。本文以人类精神文明史为背景 和艾略特影响重大的基督教思想为依据，抛开“非个性”主张影响，将作品 转向心理层面来探索，从社会荒原、诗人的心灵荒原、诗中毁灭意象等三个 方面对荒原进行分析。认为艾略特是在病态的心理、绝望心情下，向读 者展现出一幅幅大地干涸、人欲横渡、道德论丧的毁灭的废墟的画面及现代 人的精神荒原，并从中探寻荒原形成的原因和毁灭的寓意。从而反映出诗人 整治荒原的强烈愿望，他想借用圣经的典故来警告世人，如选民若背弃 上帝就要生活在绝望无水的荒原里，就要遭受五城的毁灭，人类只有经受了 试炼方可获得新生。 第一章介绍艾略特创作荒原的历史背景和现实社会荒原在诗歌中的 反映。由于现代科学迅速发展，自文艺复兴以来，人们对基督的信仰逐渐衰 弱。第一次世界大战彻底摧毁了西方的传统基督教义、生活方式和道德观念， 人们承受着梦幻破裂的痛苦，陷入了沮丧、空虚、幻灭的情绪中。荒原恰 是现代人精神颓废的重要象征形式，展现出2 0 世纪一代人的幻灭。艾略特向 读者展示了一幅生动形象的现代文明的荒芜的画面。诗人把社会现实描写为 一片干枯的沙漠。 第二章描写艾略特个人的心灵荒原及其在诗中的体现。在创作荒原 期间，生活的拮据、超负荷的工作、父亲的去世、不幸的婚姻导致艾略特的 精神几乎到了崩溃的边缘。荒原是艾略特内心深处的荒原的折射，初春四 月描写为最残忍的四月，婚姻是不幸、不正常的性关系，现实的伦敦变成了 圣经里的荒芜的沙漠。这是诗人用古代的荒原影射现代文明所面临的危 机，这也许是诗人决定用荒原作为这首诗的题目的真正用意。 第三章描写荒原里毁灭性的意象及所含寓意。荒原中的意象种类 之多、范围之广，从诗中的题目“荒原”到五个部分的小标题，每一个都是 一个意象，其中水、火、伦敦的倒塌是三个最主要的毁灭意象。本章用三 个最主要的意象来说明毁灭的寓意：水、火、伦敦桥的倒塌。诗人用水、火 等意象，让水淹没荒原上所有的人欲、物欲；让火燃尽人世间的浮靡和荒唐， 使人类和万物毁灭；伦敦桥的倒塌意象是现实的巴黎的毁灭，说明荒原的毁
