英语这一语言的学习和掌握；探讨并归纳汉英语篇衔接手段的异同，为翻译实践工作带来一些 启示。 本文主要从章回体小说红楼梦及其英译本( 杨宪益、戴乃迭译) 中引用了大量的例子， 从语法衔接手段和词汇衔接手段方面做了对比研究，并在这个研究的基础上论证了汉英衔接手 段的转换中所使用的翻译策略。研究揭示了英汉语篇中衔接手段的一些明显差别，例如，英语 使用人称代词和指示代词的频率高于汉语，而汉语使用零式指代和名词的重复来表达照应关系 的频率则高于英语；替代尤其是动词替代在英语比在汉语更为常见：英语常使用动词省略而汉 语常出现主语的省略，这就要求我们在翻译过程中做出适当的调整：最后，重复出现的频率在 汉语语篇远比在英语语篇中高，等等。本文重点对比分析了语法衔接手段中的照应、省略、替 代以及词汇衔接手段中的重复。
