Theoretical Organic Chemistry at Leiden University1974Ph. D. in Chemistry and Physics at Leiden University. The experimental work was done at the worldwide reputable FOM-Institute of Atomic and Molecular Physics (www.amolf.nl) in Amsterdam. Promotores were Prof. Dr. J. Kistemaker and Prof. Dr. L.J. Oosterhoff.1974Was honoured as a most bright student getting a special position at Philips, which waived the military service.3. CareerApril 1974 - September 1982: Philips Research Laboratories in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Various research projects were performed in the fields of analytical chemistry, plasma chemistry and IC technology. A patent was obtained for a new type of microwave cavity, which is now worldwide called the Beenakker cavity, which for the first time allowed a helium discharge at atmospheric pressure and is now widely used in commercial GC-MS spectroscopy. First to set up and coordinate the research in the field of plasma etching and plasma deposition, which were at that time emerging technologies in IC fabrication. Evaluated titanium, tungsten and tantalum silicides and high Ohmic resistors for use in IC technology.September 1982 - May 1987: Philips Semiconductors at Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Head of a department of 40 people and world wide responsible for the development of packages, processes and equipment for the assembly of ICs and discrete elements. Defined with Japanese companies (Mashushita, Sharp) new package families for dual in line and quad pack small outline packages. Invited speaker on behalf of Europe on the Kobe conference in 1985. Developed the first in-line assembly module and implemented it in the Philips Kaohsiung factory. A main task was the transfer of the know-how to the assembly factories in the Far East and to set up a development centre there. Started cooperation with Mashushita in Japan and with Signetics in the US in the field of IC packaging.Nowadays the proposed packages are worldwide used, the Nijmegen group has successfully expanded to a centre for innovative packaging with about 60 high level researchers, while the Kaohsiung development centre supports the innovation in assembly process and equipment.May 1987 - November 1989: Eurasem B.V. at Nijmegen. Confounder and director of operations. Eurasem was the first independent assembly company in Europe. The company assembles complex and high rel ICs in a highly automated production environment. The company is now part of Elmos and employs about 100 people. Extensive experience gained in starting up a company.November 1989 -: Head of the sector IC process research and director of the Delft Institute of Microelectronics and Submicron technology (DIMES). DIMES is the Dutch national research centre in the field of silicon microelectronics. It was established in 1987 and has newest equipment. A business strategy was defined based on equipment capabilities, existing expertise and scientific challenges and has lead to four successful research directions: microsystems, large area thin film transistors, analogue IC and solar cells. This research had lead to many contracts with science foundations and industry, like Seiko-Epson, NXP, ASML, BESI and 50 other smaller companies. The business model of open innovation was started and a similar model is now used by Philips.MiPlaza. From 1987 to 2010 Dimes grew from 10 scientific staff to 50 now and from 10 Ph. D. students to 250 now. It attracts scientists from all over the world. Total income from projects (industrial, science foundations) about 5M annually.May 1990 - 1994: Member of the National Expert Committee for the JESSI programme (Joint European Submicron Silicon Initiative). This committee reports to the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and is responsible for the evaluation of the projects executed by the big industrial companies, like ASML and NXP.June 1990 -: Appointment to full professor in IC technology and member of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Delft University of Technology. Till now academic promotor of about 20 Ph. D. students in various IC related projects.November 1991 - May 1994: Member of the Board of Tempress B.V., a Dutch company involved in waferfab equipment.December 1992 October 2003: Member and since 1998 president of the Board of Boschman Technologies in DuivenJanuary 1993 -: Member of the Technology Committee of the Scientific Institute of the CDA, the largest political party in the Netherlands. Founder of the innovation platform of that party.September 1993 January 2004: Chairman of the Laboratory of Electronic Components, Technology and Materials. This group was built up from 20 persons till eventually 80 scientists and supporting personnel. More than half of the revenues is generated from cooperation with industry. Broadening of the research activities to solar cells, microwave components and thin film transistors. September 1993 - : Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 25th European Solid State Device Research Conference, The Hague, September 24-27, 1995. This conference was attended by 500 scientists and fully supported by industry. The revenue was used to constitute the Else Kooi Prijs for young scientists.January 1995 - : Head of the DIMES Technology CentreJanuary 1995- : national and international consultant for MEDEA projects (European projects for the IC industry).February 1995 - : Founder, secretary and since 2004 chairman of the Foundation Else Kooi, which supports young Dutch scientists in the field of microelectronics.June 1997- January 2003: Founder and committee member of the SAFE conference, a platform for young scientists in the region Netherlands, Belgium and Germany to meet each other and to exchange ideas.October 1999 October 2010: Chairman of the department of microelectronics and computer engineering at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science of Delft University of Technology. The department consists of 10 full professors of which 7 are from abroad. In addition there are three part time professors linked with industry (NXP, Dalsa, Philips). Thereabove there is 22 scientific staff at the associate and assistant professor level as well as 40 supporting staff. The department counts about 200 Ph. D. students, 180 M. Sc. students and 10 postdocs representing 23 different nationalities. During the recent evaluation several groups within the department were ranked excellent. Six professors are now IEEE fellow, two are member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, KNAW. The department got several Vidi awards for excellent young scientists. Two professors are editor of international journals. Brought department in better shape by acquiring several new projects and starting the internationalization of the m.sc. education. Set the model for the Netherlands by focussing on quality together with raising scholarships from industry to be able to select the best students. In this way brought the department in a sound financial situation. Designed the course Introduction into Microelectronics for M. Sc. students and teached Solid State Physics for 3rd year bachelor students. In November 2005 the educational level of the department was ranked number 7 worldwide by EE Times and in 2009 2nd in Europe in electronics design by the IEEE Journal of Circuits. April 2001 - : Founder of the DIMES/Imetu training centre in microelectronics in Beijing.
