摘要 爱德华摩根福斯特是2 0 世纪一位著名的评论家、小说家、 散文家，在英国文学界享有举足轻重的地位。他一生总共写了六部长 篇小说。由于他是一位人文主义者，所以探究人与人之间的关系，寻 求人与人之间的友好“联结挣成了他小说中的最重要的主题。印度 之行在他的这几部小说被公认为是最出色、最精彩的一部。福斯特 在这部小说里以印度为背景，探寻了在东、西方不同的文化背景下， 印度人和英国人之间的关系，并表达了他对在东、西双方之间能建立 联结的强烈渴望。 福斯特不仅在小说创作方面表现出他非凡的才能，其在小说理论 方面的贡献也是卓越的。特别值得一提的是，他的小说面面观中 的一系列评论与批评就为读者理解小说提供了许多的视角。其中，关 于节奏是最为主要的一个批评概念。 。 与以往关于节奏的观点不同，福斯特认为，节奏可以分为两种。 一种是较为简单的节奏，表现为重复加变异。主要表现小说中主旨的 重复或是变异。读者可以在小说中找到对应物。另一种是较为复杂的 节奏。读者不太容易在小说中找到相似物。但不管怎样，福斯特对节 奏提出的新阐释却为分析这部小说提供了一个新的视角。正如他所 说，节奏不仅给予小说一种视觉的美感，而且使小说结构有机统一起 来，甚至对揭示小说主题也有很大的帮助。 小说中有很多方面无疑与福斯特的节奏概念相一致，特别是与 福斯特阐释的第一种较简单的节奏有不少切合点。此外，本论文也简 单地从小说的结构方面探讨了一下他的第二种节奏。本论文通过对他 的两种节奏的分析，进而深化对小说主题的理解。 本论文由六个部分组成：前言部分简述福斯特及其小说的地位、 中外研究现状及存在的问题、本篇论文的研究视角、理论基础及研究 结构。第一章通过追踪小说中反复出现的两个关键词一混沌和神秘 来表现节奏如何实现以及人们在面对困境如何寻找一条可行的道路 去实现联结。第二章阐释了节奏是如何通过诸如黄蜂、蛇等意象以及 水和火，回声等象征的重复来得以实现。这样，小说不仅体现出视觉 上的美感，而且也揭示了小说的主题意义。第三章分析了节奏是如何 通过小说中情节的重复来表现的，例如口头语的重复，以及事件上的 相似，从而使小说结构更为紧凑。第四章从两个方面：一是小说三章 前言的相似，二是小说中三部分之间的密切关系，探讨了福斯特关于 节奏的另一种形式较难的节奏。从而在结论部分，本篇论文的作 者在对以上分析进行总结的基础上指出其意义与启示。 福斯特对节奏运用，不仅使小说具有一种生命力和视觉上的美 感，而且深化了小说的主题。从这一角度对印度之行所展开的研 究必定会对福斯特及小说提供更为深刻的理解和诠释。
