Unit6 Feelings and Moods (情感与情绪) 1、 Whats Cool? This week, I asked students about fashion. I showed each student six things and asked them about each one. Some of their answers were interesting. Here are their likes and dislikes: Jack Smith likes the key ring. Her friend Jeff says he cant stand the scarf. “Its for moms!” he said. William Jones loves the wallet, and his classmate Gina Taylor loves the watch. (Her best friend Ann Rice doesnt mind the watch, but she really likes the sunglasses!) Jerry Green also likes the sunglasses. And the coolest thing was the belt. Everyone loved it! 2、 Dear Mary, I have a problem, an I need your help. I always thought I was popular at school. But I just found out that my friends were planning a birthday party for my best friend, and they didnt invite me. Everyone else in my class was invited except me, and I dont know why. I cant think what I did wrong. Im very upset and dont know what to do. What do you think? Can you help me? Yours, Lonely Kid 3、 Restaurant science Restaurant owners have to know how to make food. They also have to know how to make money. Here are some things theyve learned from scientific studies. The color red makes people hungry. Red also makes customers eat faster. Many fast food restaurants, therefore, have red furniture or walls. Soft colors like pink and light blue make people relaxed, so they spend more time eating their meals. Soft lighting makes people look good, but it makes food look bad. Loud music may be nice at first, but it soon makes people want to leave. Hard seats also make customers want to eat quickly and leave. Many restaurants, especially fast food restaurants, use this knowledge to make customers eat faster. Customers only sit for about 20 minutes before they leave. Because customers dont stay very long, small restaurants can serve many people every day. 4、 Advertising: pros and cons In the modern world, advertising is everywhere! Some people think that ads are great. Others hate ads, saying that they make our cities and countryside look ugly. Many ads are aimed specifically at teenagers, and some young people see more than 100 advertisements a day. Its true that some ads can be very useful. For instance, they can help you to compare two different products so that you can buy the one you really need. They can also help you save money. When prices are listed, you can go to the store with the lowest price. Ads also tell you when stores are having sales. However, some advertising can be confusing or misleading. Sometimes the words sound good but dont really tell you anything about the quality of the product. At other times, the picture in an ad looks a lot better than the real thing. And you have to be careful. At times an ad can lead you to buy something you dont need at all. 5、 Dear Diary, I thought today was going to be really bad. To start with, it was raining, and rainy days make me sad. And it was my birthday, but when I got up, no one was home, and Mom and Dad hadnt left me a note. I walked to school with my best friend, Gu. She didnt say anything either. This made me a little angry. After all, I remembered her birthday last month. In class, the teacher asked me for my homework, but as I was so tense when I left home, I had forgotten to bring it with me. That made me annoyed with myself. But things got better. Gu invited me for lunch. I was so surprised. Mom and Dad and all my friends were there. I had a wonderful surprise birthday lunch. That made me VERY happy. Unit 7 School Life and Language Learning (学校生活与语言学习) 1、 Dear Jane, Its Tuesday, November 11. Im really busy! At 8:00 I have math. I dont like math. Then at 9:00 I have science. Its difficult, but interesting. Next, at 10:00, I have art. Its boring, but at 11:00 I have P.E. Thats my favorite subject! I eat lunch at 12:00. After lunch, I have music. Music is relaxing. I like music teacher, Mr Cooper. Hes fun. My last class is at 2:00. After class I have volleyball for two hours. Our teacher is very strict and Im usually very tired after class. Then I have Chinese history club. Its really interesting! Lin Mei 2、 Dear grandma, Hows it going? I hope that grandpa is well now. I was sorry to hear that he had a cold last week. I hope you are in good health. Things are fine here. I finished my end-of-year exams last week and got my report card today. I always get nervous when I see the envelope from school in the mail, but luckily I did OK this time. I had a really hard time with science this semester, and I wasnt surprised to find that my worst report was from my science teacher. She said I was lazy, which isnt true. Its just that I find science really difficult. Another disappointing result was in history. My history teacher said I could do better. The good news is that my math teacher said I was hard-working. And my Spanish teacher said my listening was good. Well, thats about all the news I have for now. Mom and Dad send their love. Love, Alan 3、 How do you learn best? This week we asked students at New Star High School about the best ways to learn more English. Many said they learnt by using English. Some students had more specific suggestions. Lillian Li, for memorizing the words of pop songs also helped a little. When we asked about studying grammar she said, “ I never study grammar. Its too boring.” Wei Ming feels differently. Hes been learning English for six years and really loves it. He thinks studying grammar is a great way to learn a language. He also thinks that watching English movies isnt a bad way because he can watch the actors say the words. Sometimes, however, he finds watching movies frustrating because the people speak too quickly. Liu Chang said that joining the English club at school was the best way to improve her English. Students get lots of practice and they also have fun. She added that having conversations with friends was not helpful at all. “We get excited about something and then end up speaking in Chinese,” she said. 4、 How I learned to learn English Last year my English class was difficult for me. First of all, it wasnt easy for me to understand the teacher when she talked to the class. To begin with, she spoke too quickly, and I couldnt understand every word. Later on, I realiz
