Only if we can secure adequate daily necessities, can we enrich and develop our spiritual fiber, such as etiquettes and sense of shame. Through dietary of different nations, we can observe different etiquette traditions. As we all know, etiquette tradition is just one of the cultural performances. China is one of the four ancient civilizations, and the only one that has inherited the millennium. While the Western civilization ushered in the Renaissance, capitalism and modern civilization. It experienced a dark period in the Middle Ages. Because of the differences in history and culture, there are a variety of differences in table manners between Chinese and English cultures. Country-specific table manners is the colorful reflection of the culture and civilization of the country. Significance: Table manners give expression to custom cultures of the state. Chinese table manners goes back to ancient times and are so vast and complex, while table manners in the West is also very cultured. With the cross-culture communication becoming more and more frequent, the misunderstandings caused by cultural barriers appear frequently. The differences between Chinese and Western dietary cultures have become more obvious, especially the differences of table manners. By the analysis of the differences between Chinese and Western table manners, we can comprehend the dietary culture in two cultures, and learn and apply table manners correctly, which helps to prevent not only gaffe, but also helps to develop the ability of cross-culture communication and avoid cultural conflicts.Literature review: With the development of global economy, cross-cultural communication has become more and more frequent. There are many differences between Chinese and Western dietary cultures, especially the table manners. Studying the differences between different dietary cultures is necessary, which can have a better understanding of peoples relationships by avoiding unnecessary misunderstandings and mistakes and enhance our self-cultivation. Lin and Mao (2006) once holds that table is the best place where you can observe whether people have upbringing. When you eat, your behaviour says something about your taste and education. Exactly, if you can learn more about Chinese and Western table manners, you can avoid some mistakes, prevent embarrassing situations. Having dinner is more than the basic necessity of life. Instead, eating is the most important thing. Because of the differences in both cultures, there can be some differences in eating habits. Yi (2008) presents that the thought kernel of Chinese culture is group consciousness, while the Western culture is individual consciousness. Thus, when a Westerner invites someone to eat something, even though in this situation, they eat and drink respectively. However, its self-evident that the image that people sit at a round table, eating and drinking together, clearly shows a lively scene.Basic content: This paper is to analyze the differences of table manners in both Chinese and English dietary cultures. The focus of the research lies in four parts: the first part is to introduce the seating arrangements in both cultures; the second part is to expound the differences in setting dinnerware in both cultures; the third part is to present the serving order of courses in both cultures; the last part is to introduce the different table languages and behaviors. Research focus: This thesis focuses on the differences of Chinese and Western table manners from various aspects, such as the seating arrangements, the serving order, and dinnerware and so on.
