Free talk and lead in In this part, ask a student to give a free talk about what he wants. Here its aim is to practice students ability of English usage. Then show students a book named Robinson Crusoe. Ask them two questions “Have you ever read Robinson Crusoe?”, if ss say yes, ask them who is the main character in this story. Here comes to learn 3a in page 59. Step II. Listening and new words. In this part, first of all, show some pictures of Robinson Crusoe and watch a short movie about him. Next ask ss to listen to the tape and try to find out the words you dont know. At the same time, write new words on the blackboard. ship, tool, gun, mark, sand, cannibal, toward Here ask ss to repeat these new words after the teacher and then ask ss to find out the sentences that include the new words in groups (here 3 minutes for ss). After that, ask some ss to read the sentences they find out and list them on the blackboard. 1. Ive found the ship. 2. Ive brought back many things I can usefood and drink, tools, knives and guns. 3. I found the marks of another mans feet on the sand. 4. I saw some cannibals trying to kill two men from a broken ship. 5. one of them died but the other ran towards my house. Ask ss to read them after the teacher and translate them into Chinese in order to understand the meanings of new words. Step III: Reading and understanding First of all, ask ss to read the passage quickly and try to answer the following questions. 1. What does Robinson Crusoe wait for? 2. Why does Robinson Crusoe call the man Friday? After two minutes, encourage ss to give their answers according to the passage, check the answers: 1. He waits for another ship. 2. Because Robinson Crusoe meets him on a Friday. Secondly, give ss to read the passage again and encourage more ss to read the passage in English and in Chinese. In this part, its aim is to make ss understand the meaning of the passage and be able to speak it fluently. At the same time, by speaking English and Chinese by turns, ss can catch the main points and understand the story in whole. Thirdly, ask ss to read he passage again and do a detailed reading, try to correct the sentences in 3c. Here tell ss they are not right according to the passage, and find which sentence they are based on and how to correct. 1. Robinson Crusoe arrived on the island with enough food and drink.2. Friday made a small boat.3. Robinson had some food and tools when he first arrived on the island. 4. Robinson used the ship to build a house.5. Friday saw some marks of another mans feet on the beach.6. Robinson tried to kill the two men. After three minutes, ask some ss to answer the questions. Ask them to read the based sentences and the answers. Check the answers: 1. Robinson Crusoe arrived on the island with nothing.2. Robinson Crusoe made a small boat.3. Robinson had nothing when he first arrived on the island. 4. Robinson cut down trees to build a house.5. Robinson Crusoe saw some marks of another mans feet on the beach.6. Some cannibals tried to kill the two men. Step IV Changing and exercising In this part, ask ss to fill in the following blanks according to the first paragraph. When I first arrived on this island, I had nothing. But I _(find) the ship and _ (make) a small boat. I _ (bring) back many things I can usefood and drink, tools, knives and guns. Although I _(lose) everything, I _(not lose) my life. So I will not give up and I will wait for another ship. I _ (already cut) down trees and _ (build) a house. After two minutes, tell ss to repeat the paragraph while filling the blanks; to test how many details they remember. After showing the answers, ask ss to tell the similarities among the answers. (Some ss may say Present Perfect Tense, then ask one or two ss to say something about Present Perfect Tense). We should not give up. They are waiting for a bus. Tom saw Mary cleaning the classroom. He has two sons. One is a doctor, the other is a student. Lucy named her son Jim. Step VI: Retelling and rewriting In this part, in order to make ss understand more about the story, encourage ss to retell the story of Robinson Crusoe in groups. The teacher can show some points on the blackboard
