LISTENING TEXTSATISFACTION GUARANTEEDListen to Molly (M) and Kate (K) discussing the story “Satisfaction Guaranteed”. M:Dont you think that was a great love story, Kate? K:No, not really. M:You didnt? Well, I loved it. There was so much emotion between Tony and Claire. K:Molly, thats rubbish. You forget that Tony was a machine. Yes, Claire fell in love with Tony, but I dont believe robots could possibly feel emotion of any kind. Thats the difference between them and us. M:well, I disagree. I think Tony loved Claire. Remember he said to her how he didnt want to leave her the next day and that he felt more than just the wish to please her? K:Yes, but Molly, that was just part of Tonys role. They made him so that he wouldnt allow a human to be hurt. And Claire was hurting herself by seeing herself in a negative way and Tony couldnt let her do that. So everything Tony did was to make Claire feel good about herself. It had nothing to do with emotion that was just how he was made. M:OK, well, maybe youre right. I suppose I just want to think he was more human than he was. Anyway, I wonder how they could actually make a robot seem as if he had emotions. K:I have no idea. Maybe Tony was just a very complicated computer. Anyway, I dont believe it would ever be possible for humans to make a robot like Tony. M:Well, Kate, you just never know. Actually, Id really like a robot like Tony living at my house. Imagine a handsome man whose only purpose in life was to please you!K:Mmm. Do you know what I really think, Molly?M:What?K:I think that Tony was really a man pretending to be a robot. M:Oh, Kate!K:Actually, now that I think about it, I guess that was the companys biggest mistake. M:What?K:That they made the robot look so much like a real man. M:Yes, youre right. Answer key for Exercise 1:1 Molly2 Kate 3 Molly4 Kate 5 Kate 6 MollyAnswer key for Exercise 2:l Robots cant feel emotion of any kind. 2 By seeing herself in a negative way. 3 She likes the idea of a handsome man whose only purpose was to please her. 4 That Tony is really a man pretending to be a robot. 5 Making the robot look so much like a real man. Answer key for Exercise 3:See the fourth listening. Sample discussion for Exercise 4:S1:I think robots will be able to make life so much better for people. For example, nobody will need to do housework any more because the robot will do it for them. S2:Maybe they could also make wonderful dinners for parties and tidy up the childrens bedrooms after theyve gone to bed. S3:Yes, that would be great. I wonder whether you could have a robot which could follow any instructions, whether it was make a sandwich or cut the grass. S2:I guess my children would like a robot that did their homework for them!S1:I suppose mine would too. But in that case, how would you ever know if someone had done the homework by themselves?S3:Yes, and if you had a really creative idea whod believe that youd created it?S1:I dont like that idea. Maybe its best for us to do our own work whether its good or not!Sample writing for Exercise 5:The rubbish collectorThe rubbish collector is a robot about half the size of a small car. Its body is square and contains a large rubbish bin inside it. It has a camera attached to the top front of its body. Also at the front is a pair of arms. Underneath it has four wheels and six legs. With the camera it can “see” rub
