When he dies, people make a statue of him. He has gold all over him from head to foot. His eyes are two sapphires, and there is a big red ruby in his sword. All the people in the town love him.TOWN COUNCILOR: Hes very beautiful, but he cant do very much.BOY: (Crying) I just want the new toy!WOMAN: Why cant you be happy? The Happy Prince never thinks of crying for new things.SAD, TIRED MAN: (Looking up at the statue)Well, theres one truly happy man in the city.Thats something!STUDENT: Look! Hes an angel!TEACHER: What do you know about angels?STUDENT: We see them in our dreams.SWALLOW: I can stay here. From here I can look down at the town and up at the open sky, too. (He sits at the feet of the Happy Prince.) Tonight I have a beautiful gold room to stay in. (A drop of water falls on him.) Thats strange, its raining! But, wait a minute. The skys clear. Hes crying! Who are you?HAPPY PRINCE: Im the Happy Prince.SWALLOW: Then why are you crying on me?HAPPY PRINCE: My name comes from happier times. But now Im dead. But I must cry becausefrom hereI can see all the poor people and all the ugly things in my city. Far away theres a poor house, a tired womans working. Shes making an evening dress for a young lady at the palace. It has beautiful red flowers on it. Her son lies ill in bed with a fever. Swallow, swallow, please pull the ruby from my sword and take it to her. I cannot move from here.SWALLOW: But my friends are waiting for me. At this time of the year they fly up and down the Nile from Cairo and talk to the Egyptian waterflowers there. I must fly away to be with them.HAPPY PRINCE: Swallow, little swallow, please stay with me for only one night. You can help me. That poor boys mother is very sad.SWALLOW: I dont like boys very much. They like hitting little birds with stones. I remember last summer, two bad boys down at the riverThe Happy Prince looks sadly at the swallow.SWALLOW: But I can fly fast, after all. Its very cold here now, butyesI can stay with you for one night and help you.HAPPY PRINCE: Thank you, little swallow.The Swallow takes the ruby from the princessword, and flies away.Act 2The swallow stops at the palace to have a rest.MAN: What a wonderful night! And what awonderful young woman you are!WOMAN: Is my new evening dress ready? I must wear it soon. I want to see the dark red flowers all over it. Why cant these dress-makers work more quickly?SWALLOW: This must be the lady that motheris working for. (He continues to fly to the poormothers home.)MOTHER: My dear, how are you now?SON: I want to drink something nice and cold.MOTHER: Heres the river water. It is cold. Idont have money for anything else. Drink this and go to sleep. (She sleeps in her chair.)SON: (Drinking the water and closing his eyes)My head is hot with fever, I cannot sleep.The swallow puts the big ruby on the table,fliesround the bed, and makes the boys head cool with his wings.SON: Thats nice, Im feeling better now.Swallow flies away.Act 3SWALLOW: Its strange. Its a cold night, but I feel very warm now.HAPPY PRINCE: That happens when you dosomething good to help someone.SWALLOW: Maybe I can stay here with you to keep myself warm by helping others.HAPPY PRINCE: Thats great. Far away across the city I see a young man. Hes writing a play for the theatre. But hes very cold and hungry, and he cant think or write anymore.SWALLOW: Shall I take him a ruby, too?HAPPY PRINCE: Sadly, I have no more rubies. Now I have only the sapphires in my eyes. Pull out one of them, and take it quickly to that poor young man.SWALLOW: Dear Prince, I cant do that!HAPPY PRINCE: Swallow, swallow, littleswallow, you must!Swallow takes out one of the princes blue eyes,flies away and comes back.HAPPY PRINCE: In the town square under us,theres a poor girl. Shes selling matches. Nobody wants to buy her matches. Her father hits her when she comes home with no money. She has no shoes on her feet and no hat on her head. Pull out my other eye and take it to her.SWALLOW: I cant pull out your other eye! Youll be blind!HAPPY PRINCE: Swallow, swallow, littleswallow, you must do this for me!Swallow takes out the other eye, flies away andcomes back.SWALLOW: Youre blind now, and so I must stay with you always.HAPPY PRINCE: I want to know more about the people here in my city. Fly out over the town, and look down. What do you see there? When you finish, come back and tell me everything.Swallow flies away and comes back.SWALLOW: I see big expensive houses with poor beggars at their doors, I see hungry children with white faces in the dark streets, and poor cold boys with nowhere to sleep.HAPPY PRINCE: Take off my gold leaf and give it to all the poor people. Perhaps it can make them happy.Swallow takes the gold from the statue and fliesaway, and comes back.HAPPY PRINCE: Swallow, swallow, littleswallow, are you all right? You look very cold.You should leave me and go to Egypt.SWALLOW: No, I love you very much and I dont want to leave you. Its cold outside, but I feel warm.HAPPY PRINCE: Yes, I look old and grey, but Im happy.
