Lead in 1. What do you know about drugs and drug abuse?2. Why do some people use Ecstasy?(Group work: Some groups present their PPT to the whole class. State your reasons in either case.)II. Background information w MDMA (Ecstasy)w MDMA is a stimulant whose psychedelic effects can last between 4 and 6 hours and it is usually taken orally in pill form. The psychological effects of MDMA include confusion, depression, anxiety, sleeplessness, drug craving, and paranoia. Adverse physical effects include muscle tension, involuntary teeth clenching, nausea, blurred vision, feeling faint, tremors, rapid eye movement, and sweating or chills. Because of MDMA ability to increase heart rate and blood pressure, an extra risk is involved with MDMA ingestion for people with circulatory problems or heart disease.w MDMA is most often manufactured clandestinely in Western Europe, primarily in Belgium and the Netherlands. These countries produce 80% of the MDMA consumed worldwide. This is primarily because of the availability of precursor and essential chemicals and international transportation hubs in this area of the world. w Drug Use in the General Populationw According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) 2001 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, 15.9 million Americans ages 12 and older (7.1%) reported using an illicit drug in the month before the survey was conducted. More than 12% reported illicit drug use during the past year and 41.7% reported some use of an illicit drug at least once during their lifetimes.w Drugs destroy millions of lives every year too often the lives of young people upon whom our future depends. In a world where more money is spent on drugs than on food, it can be difficult to convince others to just say “no.” Society owes a debt of gratitude to anyone working to salvage others from the harmful effects of drug abuse. Standing by and doing nothing about the drug problem only helps those who profit from its spreading. But working together, we can succeed in educating others to the real dangers of drugs. I11.
