Section J-1122 PHOTOGRAPHY DAYRhodes Center Auditorium, Saturday, July 30WILLIAM HENDERSON, Assistant SuperintendentGENERAL GUIDELINES1.Participants in 4-H Photography Day need to be aware that the focus of judging and display in Classes J-1 thru J-4 is on “Images captured from life” by film or digital cameras, processed, printed, mounted, and displayed as two dimensional prints. This days judging is not intended for 4-H youth who have completed projects related to videography, development of video gaming images or other digital animations or crafted images. 4-H members with non-print imagery entries should participate in Self-Determined Project Day, Sunday, August 7.2.Age of Participants: 4-H Age unless noted in specific class guidelines3.Participation Guidelines: Winner of any one class in 2010 is not eligible to participate in the same class for 2011. Each county may have no more than one participant in each class. No exhibitor shall be entered in more than one class. 4-H Members participating in all 4-H Photography projects may use either film or digital cameras.4.Type of Evaluation: Participants will have a personal interview evaluation with a judge. Judge will evaluate participant on the following basis (also see sample score sheet):Story Telling Ability of the picturePhotographic abilityThe way the pictures are mountedCaptions (optional)Photographic knowledge5.Participants to bring: Completed registration card signed by County 4-H Educator. Completed project book. A display representing their learning experience of the current project. The display should be the one used either at their local 4-H judging or at their county fair. All mounted prints must be identified by printing class, name, and county in lower right hand corner on the back of the exhibit. Refer to additional project requirements as listed in class list below. Exhibits will remain in place until the awards have been presented, beginning at 4:30 p.m.CLASSESJ-1FOCUS ON PHOTOGRAPHY, LEVEL 1 (#584)Each participant is required to bring one of the following three items for exhibit: 1) a single print of any size mounted at the discretion of the participant; or 2) a collection of prints illustrating a “Photo Story”, consisting of at least five and not more than ten photographs mounted at the discretion of the exhibitor; or 3) a collection of prints illustrating one of the “activities” the participant completed for the project, consisting of at least five and not more than ten photographs, mounted at the discretion of the participant. Each participant may also bring any other materials they feel might demonstrate their learning experiences of the current project year (although participants are not required to do so). Photochemical developing and printing may be done by the participant, but is not required.J-2CONTROLLING THE IMAGE, LEVEL II (#585)Each participant is required to bring one of the following four items for exhibit: 1) a single print of any size mounted at the discretion of the participant; or 2) a single print illustrating an “enlargement”, which shall consist of an enlargement print, accompanied by the original print, mounted at the discretion of the participant; or 3) a collection of prints illustrating one of the “activities” the participant completed for the project, consisting of at least five and not more than 10 photographs mounted at the discretion of the exhibitor; or 4) a single original print illustrating a “News Story”, which shall be an original photo mounted at the discretion of the exhibitor and accompanied by the published article. Each participant may also bring any extra materials they feel might demonstrate their learning experiences of the current project year but participants are not required to do so. Photochemical developing and printing may be done by the participant, but is not required.J-3MASTERING PHOTOGRAPHY, LEVEL III (#586)Each participant is required to bring one of the following four items for exhibit: 1) one print of any size mounted at the discretion of the participant; or 2) a single print illustrating an “Enlargement”, which shall consist of an enlargement print mounted at the discretion of the participant and be accompanied by the original print; or 3) a collection of prints illustrating one of the “activities” the exhibitor completed for the project, consisting of at least five and not more than 10 pictures mounted at the discretion of the exhibitor; or 4) a single original print illustrating a “News Story”, which shall be an original photo mounted at the discretion of the participant and be accompanied by the published article. Each participant may also bring any extra materials they feel might demonstrate their learning experiences of the current project year, but participants are not required to do so. Photochemical developing and printing may be done by the participant, but is not required.J-4ADVANCED PHOTOGRAPHY (Self-Determined Photography #365)Each participant is required to bring one of the following six items for exhibit: 1) one print of any size mounted at the discretion of participant; or 2) a collection of prints illustrating a “Picture Story” or a “Documentary”, which shall consist of at least five and not more than 10 mounted prints; or 3) a single original print illustrating a “News Story”, which shall consist of an original photo mounted at the discretion of the participant and be accompanied by the published article; or 4) a single print illustrating an “Enlargement”, which shall consist of the enlargement print mounted at the discretion of the participant and be accompanied by the original print; or 5) a collection of digital images illustrating a “Picture Story” or a “Documentary” which shall consist of at least five and not more that 10 digital images that can be viewed on a laptop computer brought by the participant and must be accompanied by a “hard copy” version of the photos. Each participant may also bring any extra materials they feel might demonstrate the learning experiences of the current project year, but participants are not required to do so. Participants in this class are encouraged to bring their Self-Determined project manual (4-H 365) showing involvement in and progress made toward completing their Self-Determined project. It is not necessary for the exhibitor to have competed in classes J-1, J-2, or J-3 prior to entering this class. Photo editing, photochemical developing and printing may be done by the exhibitor and is encouraged.AWARDS AND SPONSORS1. A participation award will be given to all participants, sponsored by the Ohio State Fair.2. An “Outstanding of the Day” award will be presented to the top 20% in each class, sponsored by The Ohio State Fair.3. A total of 5 clock trophies will be presented. Four trophies will be presented to the class winners in classes J-1 through J-4, sponsored by the Friends of 4-H. The fifth trophy, sponsored by the Osborn Family, will be presented to the exhibitor selected as the overall “Best of Show.”4. THERE ARE FOUR SEPARATE CLASSES.Dear 2011 State 4-H Photography Day Participant:Congratulations! You have been selected to represent your county at the 2011 State 4-H Photography Day at the Ohio State Fair. Since each county can select no more than one entry per class with no individual participating in more than one class, being chosen to represent your county at the Ohio State Fair is an honor of which you can be proud.The evaluation will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2011 in the Rhodes Center East Auditorium. Please check the schedule on the enclosed registration card for the time your county will participate. Also, please be sure to review the enclosed copy of the 4-H Photography Day guidelines and score sheet before you attend the Ohio State Fair. These guidelines and score sheet can be extremely helpful in answering many basic questions you may have concerning the contest. A map has also been enclosed to indicate where you should park.On the day of the event, you should plan to report to the 4-H Photography registration table in the Rhodes Center no more than 15 minutes before the scheduled time for your county. Please remember to bring your completed registration card (which has been signed by your county Extension educator), your Ohio State Fair map, and your project materials with you. Once you arrive in the Rhodes Center Auditorium, please go to the registration table to be “checked-in”. After turning in your registration card, you will then be directed to the judging area to be evaluated.We plan to enable you to have your presentation completed within one hour from the time you were scheduled.
