For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should decide on the best answer and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage One Though social anxietys symptoms have been noted since Hippocrates times, the disorder didnt make its way into psychiatric manuals until 1980s.Today some psychologists predict that the Internet culture might grease(加润滑油) the slope from mild shyness to extreme shyness. “ If people were slightly shy to begin with, they can now interact less,” say Philip Zimbardo, professor of psychology at Stanford University. “ That will make the shyness much worse.” Though certain people are born with a tendency towards extreme shyness, biology is by no means destiny. Zimbardo has also shown that by 16 weeks of age, babies display a predisposition towards shyness or boldness. Roughly one in five will cry when stimulated by something new, while others reach out to touch strangers or grab new objects. Yet some shy babies may become very sociable children, and outgoing babies may become shy, even socially phobic(畏缩的) adults. Life experiences can mould the brain to become more or less shy over time. Psychologists note that the brain appears to attach a fear marker to surroundings of a fearful situation. So, for example, when a child gets a tongue lashing from a teacher, the student will feel nervous the next few times he or she steps into that classroom. But sometimes the brain is too good at marking those associations, and the anxiety is triggered by any classroom or teacher. The classic behavior of children who do not know how to handle these “daggers to the heart”, says Zimbardo, is to avoid any attention at all. They may stop inviting friends over, speak only to certain people or refuse to go to school. By avoiding the very situations they need to learn social skill, these children diminish their ability to cope.1. According to the passage we know that_.A. the symptoms of social anxiety was not noted until 1980sB. people did not use to consider social anxiety to be a psychiatric problemC. people in Hippocrates time studied the psychological disorderD. the psychological disorder is a very common symptom to modern people2. Avoiding any attention at all.1-5 BACDA Passage 2 The word conservation has a thrifty meaning. To conserve is to save and protect, to leave what we ourselves enjoy in such good condition that others may also share the enjoyment. Our forefathers had no idea that human population would increase faster than the supplies of raw materials; most of them, even until very recently, had the foolish idea that the treasures were “limitless” and “inexhaustible”. Most of the citizens of earlier generations knew little or nothing about the complicated and delicate system that runs all through nature, and which means that, as in a living body, an unhealthy condition of one part will sooner or later be harmful to all the others.Fifty years ago nature study was not part of the school work; scientific forestry was a new idea; timber was still cheap because it could be brought in any quantity from distant woodlands; soil destruction and river floods were not national problems; nobody had yet studied long-term climatic cycles in relation to proper land use; even the word “conservation” had nothing of the meaning that it has for us today. For the sake of ourselves and those who will come after us, we must now set about repairing the mistakes of our forefathers. Conservation should, therefore, be made a part of everyones daily life. To know about the water table(地下水位.)in the ground is just as important to us as a knowledge of the basic arithmetic formulas. We need to know why all watersheds (水滨)need the protection of plant life and why the running current of streams and river must be made to yield their full benefit to the soil before they finally escape to the sea. We need to be taught the duty of planting trees as well as of cutting them. We need to know the importance of big, mature trees, because living space for most of mans fellow creatures on this planet is figured not only in square measure of surface but also in cubic volume above the earth. In brief, it should be our goal to restore as much of the original beauty of nature as we can.1. The authors attitude towards the current situation in the exploitation of natural resources is_.A. positive B. suspicious C. neutral D. critical2. According to the author, the greatest mistake of our forefathers was that _.A. they had no idea about scientific forestryB. they had little or no sense of environmental protectionC. they were not aware of the significance of nature studyD. they had no idea of how to make good use of raw materials3. It can be inferred from the third paragraph that earlier generations didnt realize _.A. the interdependence of water, soil, and living thingsB. the importance of the proper use of landC. the harmfulness of soil destruction and river floodsD. the value of the beauty of nature4. To avoid the mistakes of our forefathers, the author suggests that _.A. we plant more treesB. natural sciences be taught to everybodyC. environmental education be directed toward everyoneD. we return to nature5. What does the author imply by saying “living space . is figured., also in cubic volume above the earth” ( Lines 79, Para. 3) ?A. Our living space on the earth is getting smaller and smaller.B. Our living space should be measured in cubic volume.C. We need to take some measures to protect space.D. We must preserve good living conditions for both birds and animals.1-5 DBACD Passage 3 It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, and IT departments still needed to train and educate their staff. With new technologies and techniques introduced on a daily basis, the need or training and education never goes away. In an effort to tighten their belts many organizations have decided to reduce the book and magazine budgets of individual developers, often down to nothing. This is a stupid mistake.Software development is an information-intense effort and developers need to keep up with the latest technologies and techniques-magazines and books are a necessity, not a fringe benefit (额外福利). Most developers are willing to invest some of their spare time reading about new and valuable skills, but only if their employer pays for the reading material. Why is this important to your organization? First, there is a wide range of skills that you need to consider. Second, the more technical a skill is, the shorter the period of its usefulness and therefore the greater the need for just-in-time training. Third, because technology changes rapidly, you will need to send developers on technology courses on a regular basis.Conferences are a great source of training, one that organizations shouldnt ignore. For about the same price as a specific training course you can send someone to a conference where they have the opportunity to gain a wide range of skills. You still need to choose conferences wisely. My theory is that many organizations tell developers that they can attend one conference each year but leave it up to the individual to choose. This is also a mistake. A better approach is to identify the skills that each individual actually needs, instead of wants, and then send them to the appropriate conference.1. What does the author mean by saying “tighten their belts” (Line 4, Para 1)? A. It is not a wise decision for organizations to reduce the book and magazine budgets. B. Many organizations plan to reduce the book and magazine budgets. C. Many organizations plan to reduce the unnecessary expenditures. D. Many organizations encounter management crisis.2. Why does the author mention the book and magazine budgets of individual developers in Para.1?A. To demonstrate that book and magazine budgets are important to software developers. B. To demonstrate that budgets for software developers training are necessary. C. To demonstrate that software development is an information-intense effort.D. To demonstrate that many organizations always make some stupid mistakes.3. Which of the following is NOT the reason for investing money in software developer training? A. There are huge numbers of technology and skills in modern society. B. It takes a short period to introduce a new technology. C. The serviceable period of a new skill is quite short in modern society. D. Technology progresses rapidly in modern society.4. According to the author, all of the following are good ways for developer training EXCEPT . A. reading specific books and magazines B. attending training courses C. attending conferences D. gaining new skills regularly5. From the passage we can infer that the passage is probably selected from _. A. a speech to business leaders B. a speech of a manager to his staff C. an article in a popular magazine D. an article in a science journal1-5 CBBDAPassage 4 You are watching a film in which two men are having a fight.
