This thesis introduces the definition of culture and the significance of studying American culture, and then analyses, in American culture, the pursue of democracy, freedom and success and the individualism in their lives. At last I draws a conclusion that from the perspective of movies, Americans are individualistic, and good at pursuit of democracy, freedom and success in their life. Keywords American cultural, Movies, Democracy，freedom and success In this term, I have been through several movies in class, including Shrek, Godfather , Dead Poets Society，Thelma & Louiseand so on. The movies are not only interesting but significant, from which I learnt a lot about American cultural, impressing me deep. In my opinion, The main content of American culture is the emphasize on the pursue of democracy, freedom and success.The Dead Poets Society, a classic motivational movie , sent us a message that if you have dreamed about it , just do it. Whats more, it told us that whats the essence of life and the pursue of democracy and freedom. TheThelma & Louiseis appealing to us that its time that we put value on women. American society has great movements within itself. These movements are shown in two aspects: movements amongst locations and movements inside the society. The United States are relatively more open and have more freedom. Developed transport and the tradition of adventure and sporty makes a lot of American migrate from countryside to cities, from downtown to uptown; and from north to the southern sunny land, from one city to another. Unlike European countries, the social classes in America is not so stable. Further more, with the advocation of public education, movements upwards along the social ladder have become possible. Many people living in the states, no matter whether they are Native American or immigrants from overseas, have the same dream of changing their social class and make their lifetime dream come true through their own efforts. This is what they often called American dream.The movie The Gold Rush acted by Chaplin is a typical example about American dream on a style of humorous. Actually, Americans have very strong senses of success. Success is the pursuit of most Americans, it is their attractive future and the incentives for moving forward. They believe that ones personal value is equivalent to his achievements in his career. Some high achievers in their career such as entrepreneurs, scientists, artists and all kinds of super starts became modern heroes. The process and result of how they strived have become the frame of reference of social culture value and the real life text book for parents to educate their children. In America, notion has palaced its destiny in the hands and heads of its millions of free men and women; and its faith in freedom under the guidance of God. Freedom means the supremacy of human rights everywhere. Their support goes to go those who struggle to gain those rights or keep them. What, then, is the spirit of democracy and liberty in USA? As far as I am concerned, the spirit of democracy and liberty is the spirit which is not too sure that it is right; the spirit of democracy and liberty is the spirit that Thelma said to her husband that “youre my husband, not my father”; The spirit of democracy and liberty is the spirit that the boys said goodbye to John Keating in a way of standing on the desk in class . They hate to be tied by the old rules and they are used to control of their own destiny themselves, which is a part of American cultural. A sudden, a poem flashed across my brain that “O Captain! My Captain” , which poem is used to read by John Keating. They desire for liberty and fight for it. The pursue of democracy, freedom and success, on the other hand, shows the Individualism in America. Individualism, the core of the social philosophy and value in American culture, takes up the most important position in the American ideology, influencing all aspects of life ranging from political to social fields. Firstly, Individualism, as an aim of values, emphasizes on oneself is the aim of ones words and behaviors. “Self” has the most important value and the society is only the method to realize “self”. Secondly, as a thought of political democracy, individualism opposes any intervention from authority, nation, collective or individuals. It put high value on the slogan of “free government” which leads to the spread of anarchism.Individualism is characteristic of western capitalist political and social philosophy regarding personal value as the most lofty, emphasizing self-control. On this very account, without any hesitation people in America will fight for their democracy, freedom and success. Equality, that is to say, American people believe that the social relationship in the United States is horizontal, not vertical. In the nineteenth and early twentieth century, with the birth of feminist , women got up to fight for their unfair being treated ,which can be showed from the movie Thelma & Louise. In fact, live is the origin of movie. Watching a movie, at the same time, we can know the style of live in the movie, which is a kind of cultural we can learn. Therefore, I draws a conclusion that from the perspective of movies, Americans are individualistic, and good at pursuit of democracy, freedom and success in their lives. I felt luck
