(20%) I must have dozed off round about dawn, for I was roughly wakened by Morag. Be off with you. The cars coming. I ran upstairs, dragged Cathleen out of bed, and grabbed my rucksack and we ran to our bikes. We just managed to leave before the car came down the lane. We came out of a thin wood into open fields, and my heart fell, for there were gates across the path. I fretted at the precious seconds that were lost in opening the first of them-the car was following us. But it was the gates that saved us. It takes longer to open a gate from a car than from a bicycle, and what we gained in this way made up for the extra speed of the car on the stretches between. It must have looked a preposterous race to an onlooker. I would forge ahead, slide off on to one of the pedals, jump down, and half open the gates. Cathleen following behind would ride through and head for the next gate at full speed. Meanwhile I would slam the gate, making sure it was firmly shut. By the time I reached the next one, Cathleen would have it open and I would ride through and then head for the third, and so on. By this technique we kept the ear at bay, a couple of fields behind, and certainly out of shooting range. At length we came to what I had been hoping for, a stout gate that simply couldnt be opened. I lifted the cycles over. This eost some time- I could see the ear catching up. But the great thing was that the car could not be lifted over, and to attempt to force a way through would be to risk damage and delay. Looking back I saw that we had won. The big ear was being slowly turned. We were safe. Soon there would be ample cover near the main road-trees and bushes, in contrast to the open ground we were now crossing. And so I allowed the pace to slacken, We didnt dawdle by any means, but travelled at a speed a little more suitable for a tired girl. But this was a mistake. At first I thought the noise was being made by some farmer at work early. Soon I realized the noise was too loud for only one tractor. When We got to the top of a low hill I realized that four tractors were heading in our direction. They could travel faster than we could over the bumpy ground. The position was plainly desperate. All we could do was abandon our bikes as we could make better time now on foot. We ran until I thought my lungs would burst, but at every stride the tractors came closer.Next there came a long stretch of rough uphill ground. Everything depended on the other side of the hill. With a great effort we would be ahead when we reached the top. If there were enough bushes on the other side we should be safe. We arrived at the top. Ahead was a mile of open ground and not a bush or tree in sight. The tractors were certain to run us down.21.
