完形填空(一)
valentine’s day was the time my father chose to show his love for the special people in his life. over the years i fondly (天真的) thought 1 him as my “valentine man”.
my first recollection of the 2 he could bring to valentine’s day came when i was six. that morning at the breakfast table i found a card and a gift-wrapped package at my chair. the card was 3 “love, dad” and the gift was a ring with a small piece of red glass to 4 my birthstone, a ruby (红宝石). there is 5 difference between red glass and rubies to a child of six, and i remember 6 that ring with pride that all the cards in the world 7 not surpass (超越).
8 i grew older, the gifts gave 9 to heart-shaped boxes filled with my 10__ chocolate and always included a 11 card signed “love, dad”. in those years my thank-you became 12 of a perfunctory (敷衍) response. the cards seemed less 13 , and i took for granted that the valentine would 14 be there. i had 15 my hopes and dreams in receiving cards and gifts from “significant others” and “love dad” just didn’t seem quite 16 .
his final card remains on my desk today. it’s a 17 of how special fathers can be and how important it has been to me over the years to know that i had a father who continued a 18_ of love with simple acts of understanding and an ability to express happiness over the people in his life.
those things never 19 , nor does the memory of a man who never 20 being my valentine.

alone together, an amazing description of our changing relationship with technology, is written by sherry turkle, an mit professor of the social studies of science and technology.
in the books first half, devoted to robots, turkle gives out toys like the tamagotchi, furby, and zhu zhu robotic hamster(仓鼠),then explores childrens deep attachments to the creatures and assessments of whether they are alive. such quasipets set the psychological stage for what turkle is really worried about: robot lovers. one woman even says that if a robot acted like it cared, shed trade in her boyfriend.
the books second half explores the “network”—instant messages, social networks, confessional websites, and the like—and how it reshapes the self. fifteenyearolds send and receive close to 6,000 messages a month.“they communicate all day but are not sure if they have connected.they develop friendships on social networking sites and then wonder if they are among friends.” in texting, a typical question is“where are you?”, not an openended one like “how are you?” just as robots produce confusion about whether one is alone or with another, turkle sighs.
“we_are_connected_to_each_other,_but_strangely_more_alone.”
“what cant be denied(否认) is that technology, with all its faults, makes life a lot easier. it allows us to get in touch with more people in less time; it can make conversation simple—no small talk required. but are any of those feelings equal to the kind we feel when engaged in a real, facetoface setting? online, you can ignore others feelings. in a text message, you can avoid eye contact. a number of studies have found that this generation of teens is becoming unconcerned. that doesnt spell disaster, but it does mean we might want to start thinking about the way we want to live. weve gone through terribly rapid change, and some of these things just need a little sorting out.”turkle says.
this book is not to be missed and worthy of every dollar you spend.

i regret to inform you that i will not be able to meet you at the airport on time.

by the way, as we have never met before, i must tell you that i will wear a white tshirt, two red balloons in hand that day so that you can recognize me easily.

once there was a young woman who didn’t like her job.everyday when she came home from work, she told her husband how terrible her day had been, how tiring the work and how unreasonable her boss.“leave that job,” her husband told her.
“oh,i will,” she said.“but not yet.i have too many friends there for me to leave.”and so she remained unhappy at work until the years became decades and her children had children.“leave that job,” her grandchildren told her.“oh,i will,”she said.“but not yet.there are only seven more years until i reach thirty years of service and can retire.so i can’t just yet.”

they get excited about work.they offer their unique gifts and talents eagerly.and when things don’t change as they sometimes will, they refuse to let environment hijack their selfesteem, passion or dreams.
