Like verbal language, there exist cultural universals and cultural differences in Chinese and American body languages. For example, a handshake is the most common gesture that goes with a greeting; waving a hand to say “goodbye” is the same; a frown (皱眉) shows displeasure and a pat on the back of a person indicates agreement, praise and encouragement. Not all body language means the same thing in different cultures. Body motions and gestures are learned, that is, culturally determined. There is no natural language of emotional gesture, and our gesture language which is meaningful to us is as unintelligible to another culture as our verbal language is. Even nodding or shaking the head may have a different meaning. Look at the following English sentence, “Mama pursed her lips and reminded us gently, We do not want to go to the bank. We all shook our heads.” Here the English “We all shook our heads” indicates that “We all agreed with Mama”. Americans are ready to maintain good eye contact in conversation, but they do not like long stares. With people who are unfamiliar to us, we must avoid staring at them, and yet we must also avoid ignoring them. We look at them long enough to make it quite clear that we see them, and then we immediately look away. In face-to-face communication, a detailed knowledge of the counterparts body language can help us know more than just what he says. A person can use words to hide the truth, but the unconscious nonverbal body language may betray (背叛) him. For example, during the days of Nazism, the Jews within the boundaries of Germany did their best to hide their race, but they were often discovered by the Nazis because of their bold and unrestrained (无节制的) gestures. So their body language frequently revealed their race. 56. If an American mother pats her son on the back, what does she mean?A. She is disappointed with her son.B. She is angry with her son.C. For three years, we lived in the town of Parkersburg. On the first Christmas there, my brothers and I had been well prepared for a holiday without presents. But we had a surprise on Christmas Eve. At midnight, we were woken up by someone shouting at our front door, “Ho, ho, ho! Merry Christmas!” We jumped up and ran to the door to find no one there, but several boxes and bags! Not only were there gifts, which were our favorite, but there were also clothes and food. Each of us kids, as well as Mom, had gifts with our names on them. And the clothes all fit us! Another year went by and on Christmas Eve, we again got boxes and bags full of goodies. The next year we moved. We were in the same town but across the other side. Mom was beginning to get on her feet. Since we had moved and Mom had a better job, we were quite certain that “Santa” wouldnt visit us that year. But we were wrong! Those “Santa” visits restored in me the belief in the goodness of mankind, though to this day we dont know who our helper was. When we grew up, Mom moved to Virginia. She had some extra money one Christmas. She sent it to me and let us know her decision. We then took action. My husband and children had so much fun buying and wrapping presents for the needy family we had chosen. On Christmas Eve, we allowed the excited kids to stay up late to be part of our secret “Santa” project. Such satisfaction there was in being able to pass on the gift of love to others who needed it. When one person gains weight, close friends often gain weight, too. VOICE TWO: The study shows that when a person becomes severely overweight, there is a fifty-seven percent increased chance that one of his or her friends will become severely overweight, too. A sister or brother of the overweight person has forty percent increased chance of becoming fat. The increased risk for a wife or husband is a little less than that. Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School was a lead researcher in the study. He says his research shows fat people are not choosing fat friends. VOICE ONE: The study found that the sex of the friends is also an influence. In same-sex friendships, a person has a seventy-one percent increased risk of getting fat. The same is true for brothers and sisters separately. VOICE TWO: The other lead researcher was James Fowler of the University of California. Mr Fowler says physical closeness has little influence and a friend who lives a few hundred kilometers away has as much influence as one in your neighborhood. He says the study shows the need to consider that a major part of a persons health is tied to his or her social connections. VOICE ONE: Both Doctor Christakis and Mr Fowler agree that fatness is not just a private (个人的) medical issue, but a public health problem. They say close friends probably influence what a person finds acceptable and unacceptable. If a friend is fat, the idea of being overweight becomes more acceptable. The researchers say if friends help make fatness acceptable, they might also be influential in the fight against fatness.65. What is the best title of the passage?A. The cause of fatness.B. Well, Ill tell you why its one of the best movies ever. simply has everything one could want in a movie. First of all, it has a real romance one where you can watch the characters slowly fall in love. Its not like todays movies where two characters meet and the next scene is them waking up together. Secondly, it has humor, not silly humor, but clever, sarcastic (讽刺的) humor. Baronness Schraeder is especially well-done in this regard. Her comments are intended to hurt Maria. “Good bye, Maria. Im sure youll make a fine nun.” You just want to slap her across the face after hearing that. Thirdly, its got adventure. The Nazis are the worst “bad guys” in any movie WWII is as clear a case of good against bad as you can find, making it great material for films, so its great to see Maria, the Captain and the kids outwit (智胜) them. Fourthly, its got great music. Fifthly, its got great scenery. And the plot and dialogue are amazing. I find new things to admire each time I watch. Finally, is there a greater scene in any movie than the nuns showing the stolen Nazi car parts? does not just succeed because it cheers people up with a beautiful love story or songs. It succeeds because it is a wonderfully-constructed, wonde
