Zhu Swallows may have gone but there is a time of return willow trees may have died back but there is a time of regreening peach blossoms may have fallen but they will bloom again Now you the wise tell me why should our days leave us never to return If they had been stolen by someone who could it be Where could he hide them If they had made the escape themselves then where could they stay at the moment Zhang If swallows go away they will come back again If willows wither they will turn green again If peach blossoms fade they will flower again But tell me you the wise why should our days go by never to return Perhaps they have been stolen by someone But who could it be and where could he hide them Perhaps they have just run away by themselves But where could they be at present moment Zhu I don t know how many days I have been given to spend but I do feel my hands are getting empty Taking stock silently I find that more than eight thousand days has already slid away from me Like a drop of water from the point of a needle disappearing into the ocean my days are dripping into the stream of time soundless traceless Already sweat is starting on my forehead and tears welling up in my eyes Zhang I don t know how many days I am entitled to altogether but my quota of them is undoubtedly wearing away Counting up silently I find that more than 8 000 days have already slipped away through my fingers Like a drop of water falling off a needle point into the ocean my days are quietly dripping into the stream of time without leaving a trace At the thought of this sweat oozes from my forehead and tears trickle down my cheeks Zhu Those that have gone have gone for good those to come keep coming yet in between how 5 23 swift is the shift in such a rush When I get up in the morning the slanting sun marks its presence in my small room in two or three oblongs The sun has feet look he is treading on lightly and furtively and I am caught blankly in his revolution Thus the day flows away through the sink when I wash my hands wears off in the bowl when I eat my meal and passes away before my day dreaming gaze as I reflect in silence I can feel his haste now so I reach out my hands to hold him back but he keeps flowing past my withholding hands In the evening as I lie in bed he strides over my body glides past my feet in his agile way The moment I open my eyes and meet the sun again one whole day has gone I bury my face in my hands and heave a sigh But the new day begins to flash past in the sigh Zhang What is gone is gone what is to come keeps coming How swift is the transition in between When I get up in the morning the slanting sun cast two or three squarish patches of light into my small room The sun has feet too edging away softly and stealthily And without knowing it I am already caught in its revolution Thus the day flows away through the sink when I wash my hands vanishes in the rice bowl when I have my meal passes away quietly before the fixed gaze of my eyes when I am lost in reverie Aware of its fleeting presence I reach out for it only to find it brushing past my outstretched hands In the evening when I lie on my bed it nimbly strides over my body and flits past my feet By the time when I open my eyes to meet the sun again another day is already gone I heave a sigh my head buried in my hands But in the midst of my sighs a new day is flashing past Zhu What can I do in this bustling world with my days flying in their escape Nothing but to hesitate to rush What have I been doing in that eight thousand day rush apart from hesitating Those bygone days have been dispersed as smoke by a light wind or evaporated as mist by the morning sun What traces have I left behind me Have I ever left behind any gossamer traces at all I have come to the world stark naked am I to go back in a blink in the same stark nakedness It is not fair though why should I have made such a trip for nothing Zhang Living in this world with its fleeting days and teeming millions what can I do but waver and wander and live a transient life What have I been doing during the 8 000 fleeting days except wavering and wandering The bygone days like wisps of smoke have been dispersed by gentle winds and like thin mist have been evaporated by the rising sun What traces have I left behind No nothing not even gossamer like traces I have come to this world stark naked and in the twinkling of an eye I am go to back as stark naked as ever However I am taking it very much to heart why should I be made to pass through this world for nothing at all Zhu You the wise tell me why should our days petty landlord family in a small county town in Heilongjiang China s far northeastern province where it snowed for at least four months of the year In 1911 I was born into a petty Landlord family in a remote county town in Heilongjiang Province a town situated virtually at the northeastern tip of China We had snow there for as long as one third of a year Father was very avaricious almost to the point of inhumanity Father driven by avarice often became very unfeeling He was miserly cold or heartless to his servants his children and even his own father He would treat his servants his own children and even my grandpa alike with meanness and indifference not to say with ruthlessness Once a tenant failed to pay his house rent and Father detained his cart and horses Once due to a dispute over house rent he took away by force a tenant s horse drawn cart and drove it home The tenant s family knelt in front of Grandpa pleading for mercy with tears in their eyes Grandpa took the two brown horses off the cart and gave them back to the tenant The tenant s family came to see grandpa and dropping to their knees tearfully related their troubles Grandpa unharnessed the two chestnut horses and returned them to the tenant 6 为着这两匹马 父亲向 祖父起着终夜的争吵 for which Father rowed with him for the whole night That touched off a night long quarrel between father and grandpa 7 两匹马 咱们是不算 什么的 穷人 这匹马 就是命根 祖父这样 说着 而父亲还是争 吵 Two horses do not matter much to us said Grandpa but they are of life and death to the poor But Father would not give in The two horses mean nothing to us but everything to the poor argued grandpa Father however refused to listen When I was nine Mother died and Father became even worse If you accidentally broke a small thing like a cup he would throw such curses as to make you shiver all over Mother died when I was nine From then on father went from bad to worse Even a mere cup accidentally broken by someone would send him into such a violent rage that we all shivered with fear His eyes would cast sideways glances Whenever I passed by him he would eye me sideways Later whenever I happened to walk past him he would even have his eyes directed sideways which 复旦大学 文学翻译鉴赏 讲义 散文翻译 2016 年秋季 7 23 身上生了针刺一样 他 斜视着你 他那高傲的 眼光从鼻梁经过嘴角 而后往下流着 with an arrogant look streaming down the bridge of his nose and off the corner of his mouth making me feel as if pricked on needles made me feel like being pricked all over on thorns When he looked askance at me superciliousness gushed from his eyes down the bridge of his nose and then off the corners of his mouth 10 所以每每在大雪中的 黄昏里 围着暖炉 围 着祖父 听着祖父读着 诗篇 看着祖父读着诗 篇时微红的嘴唇 In snowy evenings I would sit with Grandpa by the stove listening to him reading poems with my eyes fixed on his pink lips while he was reading Often of a snowy evening we children would hang about grandpa by a heating stove listening to him reading poems aloud and meanwhile watching his busy ruddy lips When Father beat me I would go to Grandpa s room and stood by the window from evening till late into the night watching the cotton white snow falling while the lid of the kettle over the stove clinked like a musical instrument playing accompaniment Whenever father had given me a beating I would seek solace in grandpa s room where I would stay gazing out of the window from dusk will late into the night while snowflakes were flying like cotton and the lid of the kettle over the heating stove rattling like a musical instrument playing an accompaniment Grandpa putting his wrinkled hand on my shoulder and then on my head would say Grandpa would place his wrinkled hand on my shoulder and then on my head saying Grow quickly my child When you are grown things will be better Grow up quick poor child You ll be all right after you ve grown up When I was twenty I fled home I fled from home at twenty Since then I have been wandering around like a hobo And so far I still live the life of a vagrant Grown as I am things are not any better True I ve grown up but I m not yet all right However from Grandpa I have learned that in life there is not only coldness and hatred but also warmth and love Nevertheless from grandpa I ve learned that apart from coldness and hatred there is also warmth and love in life For that warmth and love I will keep yearning Hence my everlasting dream and pursuit of this warmth and love 8 23 Samuel Johnson s Letter to Lord Chesterfield Samuel Johnson 1709 84 To the Right Honourable the Earl of Chesterfield 7th February 1755 My Lord I have been lately informed by the proprietor of The World that two Papers in which my Dictionary is recommended to the Public were written by your Lordship To be so distinguished is an honour which being very little accustomed to favours from the Great I know not well how to receive or in what terms to acknowledge When upon some slight encouragement I first visited your Lordship I was overpowered like the rest of Mankind by the enchantment of your address and could not forbear to wish that I might boast myself Le vainqueur du vainqueur de la terre that I might obtain that regard for which I saw the world contending but I found my attendance so little encouraged that neither pride nor modesty would suffer me to continue it When I had once addressed your Lordship in public I had exhausted all the art of pleasing which a retired and uncourtly scholar can possess I had done all that I could and no Man is well pleased to have his all neglected be it ever so little Seven years My Lord have now passed since I waited in your outward Rooms or was repulsed from your Door during which time I have been pushing on my work through difficulties of which it is useless to complain and have brought it at last to the verge of Publication without one Act of assistance 1 one word of encouragement or one smile of favour Such treatment I did not expect for I never had a Patron before The Shepherd in Virgil grew at last acquainted with Love and found him a Native of the Rocks Is not a patron My Lord one who looks with unconcern on a Man struggling for life in the water and when he has reached ground encumbers him with help The notice which you have been pleased to take of my Labours had it been early had been kind but it has been delayed till I am indifferent and cannot enjoy it till I am solitary and cannot impart it 2 till I am known and do not want it I hope it is no very cynical asperity not to confess obligations where no benefit has been received or to be unwilling that the Public should consider me as owing that to a Patron which providence has enabled me to do for myself Having carried on my work thus far with so little obligation to any Favourer of Learning I shall not be disappointed though I should conclude it if less be possible with less for I have been long wakened from that Dream of hope in which I once boasted myself with so much exultation 9 23 My Lord Your Lordship s Most Humble Most Obedient Servant SAM JOHNSON 3 Notes by James Boswell 1 The following note is subjoined by Mr Langton Dr Johnson when gave me this copy of his letter desired that I would annex to it his information to me that whereas it is said in the letter that no assistance has been received he did once receive from Lord Chesterfield the sum of ten pounds but as that was so inconsiderable a sum he thought the mention of it could not properly find a place in a letter of the kind that this was 2 In this passage Dr Johnson evidently alludes to the loss of his wife We find the same tender recollection recurring to his mind upon innumerable occasions and perhaps no man ever more forcibly felt the truth of the sentiment so elegantly expressed by my friend Mr Malone in his Prologue to Mr Jephson s tragedy of JULIA Vain wealth and fame and fortune s fostering care If no fond breast the splendid blessings share And each day s bustling pageantry once past There only there our bliss is found at last 3 Upon comparing this copy with that which Dr Johnson dictated to me from recollection the variations are found to be so slight that this must be added to the many other proofs which he gave of the wonderful extent and accuracy of his memory To gratify the curious in composition I have deposited both the copies in the British Museum
