try again.this time the boy ran faster, but again the basket was empty before he returned. out of breath, he told his grandpa that it was impossible to carry water in a basket, so he went to get a bucket instead.the grandpa said, “i dont want a bucket of water; i want a basket of water. youre just not trying hard enough.”the boy again dipped the basket into the river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandpa the basket was empty again. out of breath, he said, “grandpa, its useless!”“so, you think it is useless?” the grandpa said, “look at the basket.”the boy looked at the basket and for the first time he realized that the basket was different. it had been transformed from a dirty old coal basket and was now clean. “grandson, thats what happens when you read the book. you might to prepare for the cold months. squirrels, for example, have been busy gathering nuts from trees. well, scientists have been busy gathering information about what the squirrels do with the food they collect. they examined differences between red squirrels and gray squirrels in the american state of indiana. the scientists wanted to know how these differences could affect the growth of black walnut trees. the black walnut is the nut of choice for both kinds of squirrels. the black walnut tree is also a central part of some hardwood forests. rob swihart of purdue university did the study with jake goheen, a former purdue student now at the university of new mexico. the two researchers estimate that several times as many walnuts grow when gathered by gray squirrels as compared to red squirrels. gray squirrels and red squirrels do not store nuts and seeds in the same way. gray squirrels bury nuts one at a time in a number of places. but they seldom remember where they buried every nut. so some nuts remain in the ground. conditions are right for them to develop and grow in the following spring. red squirrels, however, store large groups of nuts above ground. professor swihart calls “death traps for seeds”. gray squirrels are native to indiana. but professor swihart says their numbers began to decrease as more forests were cut for agriculture. red squirrels began to spread through the state during the past century. the researchers say red squirrels are native to forests that stay green all year, unlike walnut trees. they say the cleaning of forest land for agriculture has helped red squirrels invade indiana. jake goheen calls them a sign of an environmental problem more than a cause.25.the study done by rob swihart and jake goheen is to _. a. find out the living conditions for squirrelsb. do something to get rid of squirrels c. learn squirrels influence on black walnut treesd. save the forests in the american state of indiana26.the difference between gray squirrels and red squirrels mainly lies in _. a. the way they gather the walnut b. the place they store the walnuts c. the number of the nuts they can collect d. the fact that the gray squirrels have a bad memory27.when professor swihart says “death traps for seeds”, he actually means that _. a. nuts above the ground will not develop into plants b. red squirrels eat more nuts than gray squirrels c. gray squirrels and red squirrels will have severe fights d. seeds can be traps for other animals in the forest28.according to the passage, which of the following is true? a. gray squirrels do more harm to the forest than red squirrels. b. red squirrels and gray squirrels have helped the spread of walnut trees. c. the cleaning of forest land benefits gray squirrels directly. d. human beings should bear some responsibility for the decreasing number of grayc canadian short story writer alice munro won the nobel prize for literature. eighty-two-year-old munro is only the 13th woman to win the 112-year-old prize. munro didnt publish her first collection of short stories until she was 37 years old, but her stories have always been well-received. lots of her stories share similar themes and characters, but each story has its own twists and turns. even though shes won canadas most famous literary award, the giller prize twice, winning the nobel prize for literature is the peak of munros career. “it brings her incredible recognition, both of her and her career, and of the dedication( 投身,奉献 ) to the short story,” said one person. along with the well-respected title comes 1.3 million dollars. munro said everything was “so surprising and wonderful” and that she was “dazed by all the attention and affection that has been coming my way.” munro knew she was in the listshe was named the second-most likely person to win this years prize, after haruki murakami (村上春树)of japanbut she never thought that she would win. munros win also represents the long way canadian writers have come. “when i began writing there was a very small community of canadian writers and little attention was paid by the world. now canadian writers are read, admired and respected around the globe,” munro said on thursday. she is technically not the first canadian to win the nobel prize for literature, but many like to think that she is. in 1976 saul bellow, who was born in quebec but moved to chicago when he was still a child, won the prize. even though he was born in canada, he is mostly considered to be an american writer. “this is a win for us all. canadians, by our very nature, are not very nationalistic,” said geoffrey taylor. “but things like this suddenly make you want to find a flag.” she wasnt sure if she would keep writing if she won the prize, saying that it would be “nice to go out with a bang. but this may change my mind.”29. for munro, the nobel prize is an award for_. a. her love for canadian culture b. her devotion to the short story c. her special form of writing d. her career of editing short stories 30. what can you infer from the sixth paragraph? a. canadian writers paid little attention to the prize.b. canadian writers were respected across the globe. c.
