From there, you might move on to the automakers in Detroit. But I would suggest that the list should also include a less obvious nominee:public education. At its top level, the American system of higher education may be the best in the world. Yet in terms of its core missionturning teenagers into educated college graduatesmuch of the system is failing. The United States does a good job enrolling(招生)teenagers in college, but only half of the students who enroll end up with a bachelors degree. So identifying the causes of the college dropout crisis in the worlds largest economy matters enormously, and a new book called “Grossing the Finish Line” tries to do precisely that. Its authors are economists Willian Bowen and Michael Mcpherson, and a doctoral candidate Matthew Chingos. The first problem they diagnose is something they call undue matching. It refers to students who choose not to attend the best college they can get into. They instead go to a less selective one, perhaps one that is closer to home or less expensive. About half of the low income students with a grade point average of at least 3.5 in high school and an SAT score of at least 1,200 do not attend the best college they could have. “I was really astonished by the degree to which well qualified students from poor families under matched,”said Mr Bowen. In fact, well off students attend the colleges that do the best job of producing graduates. Meanwhile, lower income studentseven when they are better qualifiedoften go to colleges that excel(擅长)in producing dropouts. “Its really a waste,” Mr Bowen said,“and a big problem for the country.” As the authors point out,the only way to lift the college graduation rate significantly is to lift it among poor and working class students. Instead,it appears to have fallen. What can be done?Money is clearly part of the answer.36Which of the following would people first think of as a factor responsible for the American financial crisis according to this passage?AThe government.BPublic education.CThe Detroit automakers.DThe Wall Street firms.37What is a big problem with American higher education?AIt is hard to enroll enough students into college.BMany colleges are experiencing low rate of graduation.CMany college students stay away from classes.DIt is hard for many colleges to get financial aid from the government.38The title of the book Crossing the Finish Line probably means _.Arunning to the end of the lineBgoing to collegeCfinishing college educationDworking hard in college39Why do some students under match?ABecause they have financial difficulty.BBecause they face ambition crisis.CBecause they lack confidence.DBecause they cant get guidance.40The passage is mainly about _.Aproblems with secondary American education and possible solutionsBAmericas financial crisis, its cause and influenceClow rate of American college graduation, its cause and its influenceDrelationship between American education and its economyBThere is no doubt that to study abroad gives you an excellent opportunity to learn things which are very helpful in your career building. Today,Canada has earned a good name in providing quality education and safe healthy environment for its students. That is why more than 130,000 international students enroll every year in famous Canadian universities. It is an ideal education destination and gives students a unique experience of education and its versatile(多样的)arts and culture. Canada spends a lot on education and is ranked the highest in G8 countries. To study in Canada is very cost effective. These universities are affordable compared to other universities in the world such as in the US,New Zealand and UK where cost of education and living is very high. According to a survey in 2006,“Canada offered the lowest tuition fees for foreign students compared to UK and Australia.”The low rate of crimes and the peaceful safe environment of the country also attract lots of international students to Canadian universities. Canada has 92 universities and 175 community colleges and university degrees have three levelsBachelors, masters and Doctoral. A Bachelors degree in Canada is for three or four years full time study depending upon the nature of the program you are doing. On the other hand,a Masters degree consists of two years of study. For a Doctoral program in Canadian university, you require a minimum of three to four or sometimes five years of research and study. You can also find many diploma and certification(认证)programs in Canadian universities where the time is generally one year. Some of the Canadian universities are well regarded worldwide and the degree and diploma obtained from these Canadian universities are recognized globally and promise bright future. After the completion of studies,a person could also find great job offers in Canada itself. International students require a work permit to work on campus.41We can learn from the passage that _.ACanada has 92 community collegesBto study in Canada is cheaper than in AustraliaCCanada spends the least on education among G8 countriesD130,000 Chinese students enroll in Canadian universities every year42How long will you spend at least in total if you want to finish your Bachelors,Masters and Doctoral degrees in Canada?A11 years. B9 years.C8 years. D7 years.43What advantages does Canada have to attract foreign students according to the passage?Quality education. Safe environment.Versatile culture. Bright job future.High scholarships. Low tuition fees.A BC D44Whats the authors attitude towards studying in Canada?AFavorable. BCritical.CDoubtful. DNot mentioned.45Whats the BEST title for the passage?ACanadian cultureBThe life in CanadaCBenefits of studying abroadDStudy in Canadaa unique experienceCSchool life is one of the most important periods in the life of man. It is also the most dreadful. This is because the educational system is based only on marks and is very competitive. In the past, exams were held to help the teacher know how far a student had understood the subject. Now,they are held to test how far a student can remember the notes. There is no value for the student who has understood the subject. Value is given only to the student who is able to reproduce the answer word by word. The present educational system brings a great pressure on the students. The teachers and parents aid in increasing the pressure. Teachers give students loads of homework simply because writing twice is equal to reading ten times. It is true but how can a child complete the homework of all five subjects in one day?Parents_want_to_live_their_life_through_their_kids. They send the child to dozen classes just because they were not able to learn dance & music, swimming &karate, but it doesnt mean that the child has to learn all these things in their place. They want their kids to excel (擅长) in everything. They also compare them to other students. The usual dialogue in a house is “Mr Xs daughter has scored 98.64% and you have just scored 97.03%!” They dont realize that by saying such things they discourage the child.Students are also human beings. They also have the same feelings as others. They also need a break from their work. Too much reading can affect their brain too. When the brain is not able to store all the information fed into it,it stops storing more data. This again leads to poor marks in the exams.46Which of the following is a problem of the present educational system mentioned in the text?AIt asks students to answer questions orally.BIt values students correct notes in class.CIt requires students to understand the subjects.DIt pays much attention to students marks.47The underlined sentence in the fifth paragraph shows that _.Aparents want to live with their children foreverBparents want their children to realize their dreamsCparents want to live a better life through their childrenDparents want their children to live a better life48Some parents compare their children with others, which will _.Amake their children hate othersBcause their children work harderCmake their children lose heartDimprove their childrens self confidence49The last paragraph probably suggests that _.Adifferent students also have the same feelingsBa lot of reading leads to poor marks in the examsCpoor exam marks result from too much readingDmuch pressure causes low learning efficiency50By writing the text, the writer tells us that _.Ahomework is a load to studentsBthe life of students is colorfulCstudents have too much pressureDschool life is very importantA high school track star in the beach town of Ventura,Woodburn was once sidelined for months with foot injuries.“I started thinking about all the things I got from runningthe health benefits, the friendships, the confidence,” he says. “And I realized there are children who dont even have shoes.”Woodburn gathered up his own slightly worn sneakers, then put out a call to teammates. His goal was to have 100 pairs by Christmas 2006.When the count climbed to more than 500 pairs(“everything snowballed,” he says),he decided to turn the shoes drive into a year round effort.Back then, the sneakers came from donation boxes and the local sporting goods store and from door to door pickups. Woodburn has now set up collection boxes at two high schools and area race. To date,S.O.S. has collected and donated more than 3,000 pairs. In just under three years,Woodburn has started three chapters of Share Our Soles:the original in Ventura, another at USC,and one at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts last January, when a student there wrote asking to get involved. The organizations website,,keeps and distributes sneakers and sells wrist bands and socks(the money earned from that go toward new shoes and socks for children)61What is the text mainly about?(No more than 8 words)_62Why does Woodburn collect so many worn shoes?(No more than 8 words)_63Why does Woodburn set up the charity?(No more than 8 words)_64What can we learn from the last paragraph?(No more than 6 words)_Section C (25 marks)综合检测(四)1C考查有关动词在语意和使用上的区别。 2B四个动词短语的主要含义:carry on“继续”;feed on“吃,以为食”;put on“上演,穿/戴上”;focus on“聚焦于”。 D项是be to do sth. mean doing sth.“意味着什么”;mean to do sth.“打算做什么”。 若用it,则:It is known to everybody that she is.。 take on“穿上,呈现”;hold on“握住”;hold up“阻碍”。 Who says谁说的;How come怎么会(表达说话人的惊讶之情);What for为什么;Why worry为什么担心。 fixed in the car 与 showing the exact position 都是宾语补足语,修饰 the electric map。the electric map与 fix 是被动关系;the electric map与showing the exact position 之间是主动关系。 14Afurnish.with. 17B根据下文“I awoke on a train moving across the country”可知作者一家搬家了。18. familiar表示“熟悉的”;vivid“生动的”,不代表 mysterious yet to come。 settle in 意为live in“定居”。 as well“也”;right away “立刻,马上”;on time “按时”。23Bin
