How to catch the main idea and tell the details after listening. 2). How to ask about a digital product and how to give proper responses. Teaching DesignThis lesson is taken from English Basic Module for vocational school, Unit8, which is made up of warm-up, listening and speaking. Most of words and expressions are used to describe online activities and digital products, which are closely related to students major course and their daily life. This lesson plays a very crucial role in Unit8, which can greatly stimulate students interest and make good preparation for the future lessons.The students in my class are short of interest in English, most of whom have a weak foundation and lack good study habits, but at the same time, they are curious for new things and they can learn best when they are highly interested and motivated. In this aspect, I apply task-based language teaching to my teaching practice. According to the authenticity principle, I design a task, in which students will have an opportunity to be a shopping guide in Huaxia Digital City. Their task is to introduce digital products to customers. In this way, students attention can be attracted. Owing to the fact that the content of warm-up is quite close to the second listening material, I integrate these two parts together to get started. After the activities in the pre-listening, students are fully prepared for the future task. This is reinforced by supplementing a listening-for-gist task. Thus, both top-down and bottom-up methods can be adopted, which will greatly facilitate students understanding and meaning-assigning process of the listening text. During this period, pause button is used for students to focus on forms, such as an exact word, phrase, pronunciation, and intonation. Post-listening activities are originally a role play. With the help of these post-listening activities, students can not only consolidate newly-learned knowledge about describing a digital product but also have chances to develop their own creative thinking. Before the class, Id like to divide you into two groups because well have a super competition today. Each group has got an apple tree here and lets see which group will get the most apples (Draw two apple trees on the blackboard). Now well begin with a song to get excited, OK?S: Sing a song. T: Great! Next lets play a guessing game. Ill give you some information. Would you please try to guess what it is with the least information, OK? (To demonstrate information on the screen one by one and let students guess until they get the correct answerthe Internet. The winning group gets the first apple on the tree).T: You did a good job! Are you interested in the Internet?S: Yes!T: The Internet is becoming more and more popular among us and we cannot live or study without it. So its necessary for us to know something about the Internet, right? Today well learn Unit8, Life Online.T: In this class, I have a special task for you to complete. Are you sure you can make it?Ss: Yes!T: Excellent! You will have a chance to be a shopping guide in Huaxia Digital City and your task is to introduce some digital products to customers. What does “digital products” mean? (Teacher writes down the phrase on the blackboard and shows students some of them, such as an iPad, a mobile phone, a laptop, a music player.) T: How to be a qualified shopping guide? First, we need to master some words and phrases about online activities. T: Please look at the pictures and think about what people are doing on the Internet. You can discuss with your partners. Teacher shows the pictures on the screen and then let students give their answers.S:Most of the students will be eager to discuss and give their answers.T: Please turn to Page131. I will give you the first dialogue to listen. Before listening, lets go through the phrases first. S:Students read the phrases freely. T: OK, lets listen to the dialogue between a man and a woman about online activities and do Exercise 6. When you listen, please pay attention to the pronunciation of these phrases. T:Ask students to exchange their answers with their partners.S:The winning group gets an apple. T: First, lets preview the true or false questions and try to underline the key words of each question. S:Students will read the questions by themselves and try to underline the key words. T:Help students to find them and understand the meanings of questions. S:Students listen to the dialogue for the second time and tell the teacher why they give the choice. T:Teacher will give the evaluation after hearing students answers. S:Students can get apples for their groups.T: OK, up to now, we have learned some words and phrases about online activities. Next, well take an iPad for example to show you how to introduce an iPad to customers, how to ask about an iPad and how to give proper responses. S:Try to underline the questions.T: After listening, ask students to list the questions and write down on the blackboard. Explain the sentences one by one. T: Write the answers on the blackboard and ask students to explain the sentences. T: Lets read the dialogue. All the boys read as Billy. Girls, Sue. S: Read the dialogue in role fluently. T: OK, lets work in groups to finish the dialogue that we just learned. Hand out sheets on which there is an exercise of filling in the blanks.S:Each group recommends a student to write down your answers.T: Lets check the answers.
