the first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didnt already know. i stood up to look around, when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. i turned around to find wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with smile that lit up her entire being. why are you in college at such a young, innocent age? i asked. she jokingly replied, im here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of kids. no seriously, i asked. i was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.i always dreamed of having a college education and now im getting one! she told me. after class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. we became instant friends. over the course of the year, rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. at the end of the semester we invited rose to speak at our football banquet. ill never forget what she taught us. “you have to laugh and find humor every day. youve got to have a dream. when you lose your dreams, you die. there is a huge difference between growing older and growing up.if you are 19 years old and lie in bed for one full year and dont do one productive thing, you will turn 20 years old. if i am 87 years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything, i will turn 88. anybody can grow older. that doesnt take any talent or ability. the idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change. have no regrets.”the elderly usually dont have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. the only people who fear death are those with regrets. she concluded her speech by courageously singing the rose. she challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. at the years end rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago.one week after graduation rose died peacefully in her sleep. over 2,000 college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that its never too late to be all you can possibly be. 【篇章结构】段落关键词大意猜测p1-2get to know;find;was curious初识老太p3instant friends;made friends wherever she went.成为朋友p4-6invited rose to speak;have a dream;difference between growing older and growing up;finding the opportunity in change;老太演讲p7taught by example;never too late to be文章主旨【信息提取】1. why is the old lady in college at a such age?a. because she wants to meet a husband.b. because she wants to get a degree.c. because she is not happy.d. because she was curious the campus.2. what does the underlined sentence mean?a. the author didnt understand what the old lady said.b. the author wanted to know how old the lady was.c. the author wondered why such an old lady were learning at college.d. the author wanted to know what the old lady was doing.3. what do people usually regret when they are old according to the old lady?a. something wrong they did.b. evreything they did.c. something they didnt do.d. something they did.4. what can we learn form rose?you are never too old to learn.rome is not built in one day.where there is a will, there is a way.a friend in need is a friend indeed.【解析】b 细节理解题。通过倒数第二段最后一句at the years end rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. 通过倒数第二段第一句话: the elderly usually dont have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. 布满皱纹的his face was d with age.他因年老而脸部起了皱纹2.humor (u) (了解) 幽默; 可笑,滑稽a sense of 幽默感3.productive adj. 富有创造性的i spent a very productive hour in the library. 葬礼attend a 参加葬礼5.challenge v. 向挑战tohe d me to another game of chess.他向我挑战 他要求我 再比赛一盘西洋棋【句子分析】i was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.【分析】本句是个主从复合句。what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age. what做主语。 the elderly usually dont have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do.【分析】该句是主从复合句。主句是the elderly usually dont have regrets for,从句是what we did。 3. over 2,000 college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that its never too late to be all you can possibly be. who taught by example that its never too late to be all you can possibly be. 在定语从句中that its never too late to be all you can possibly be. 【语法点滴】ill never forget what she taught us.what在名词性从句做主语、宾语、表语。1. 【09江苏】many young people in the west are expected to leave _ could be lifes most important decisionmarriagealmost entirely up to luck.a. as b. that c. which d. what【答案】d【解析】预计许多西方年轻人会把可能是人生中最重要的抉择婚姻, 几乎完全交由幸运之神掌握。 “_ could be life s most important decision”是leave的宾语从句, 从句缺少主语, 因此用what。答案d。2. 【2011北京卷 31】the shockin
