(15 points )American English and British English are different in many ways. The first and most obvious way is in the vocabulary. drive automobiles down freeways and fill up with gas while the British drive cars along motorways and fill up with petrol, for example. As a tourist, may be you will need to use the town by taxi (British) or cab (American). Sometimes the same word has a slightly different meaning, which can be confusing. There are also a few differences in grammar. The British say Have you got? While Americans prefer Do you have? The British use prepositions where Americans sometimes omit them. Americans say on the team, on the weekend, while the British use in the team and at the weekend. The other two areas in which the varieties differ are spelling and pronunciation. The Americans accent, which is most simlar to British English, can be heard on the East Coast of the US. But are they really so important? After all, there is probably as much variation of pronunciation within the two countries as between them. A Londoner has more difficulty undestandinga Scotsman from Glasgow than understanding a New Yorker. However, the two varieties are moving closer. With the satellite TV and the Internet, we are likely to listen to British and American English at a flick of a switch. This non-stop communication has made it easi
