When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.I walked to the door and knocked. “Just a minute,” answered a weak, elderly voice. After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the car.She kept thanking me for my kindness. “Its nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”“Oh, youre such a good man,” she said. It stands out for recognizing that fish are interesting animals who deserve our respect and compassion every bit as much as dogs and cats and other animals.” said Karin Robertson, a director of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.Last year a law was passed in Italy that gives people who desert pets big fines(罚款) and prison sentences. Since then local governments have added their own animal protection rules. The northern city of Turin passed a law in April to give pet owners fines of up to 598 if they do not walk their dogs three times a day.The new law in Rome also says that owners mustnt leave their dogs in hot cars or cut their dogs tails to make them look lovelier. With a little effort, and not much money, most of us could reduce our energy diets by 25 or more doing the earth a favor while also helping our wallets. Not long ago, my wife, PJ, and I tried a new diet not to lose a little weight but to answer an annoying question about climate change. Scientists have reported recently that the world is heating up even faster than predicted only a few years ago, and that the consequences(后果) could be severe(严重的)if we dont keep reducing emission(排放) of carbon dioxide(CO2 ) and other greenhouse gases that are trapping heat in our atmosphere. We decided to try an experiment. For one month we recorded our personal emissions of carbon dioxide. We wanted to see how much we could cut back(缩减), so we went on a strict diet. The average US household produces about 150 pounds of CO2 a day by doing commonplace things like turning on airconditioning or driving cars. Thats more than twice the European average and almost five times the global average, mostly because Americans drive more and have bigger houses. But how much should we try to reduce? For an answer, I checked with Tim Flannery, the author of The Weather Makers: How Man Is Changing the Climate and What It Means for Life On Earth. In his book, he had challenged readers to make deep cuts in personal emissions to keep the world from reaching extremely important tipping points, such as the melting(融化) of the ice sheets in Greenland or Antarctica. “To stay below that point, we need to reduce CO2 emissions by 80,” he said.Good advice, I thought. Id opened our bedroom windows to let in the wind. Wed got so used to keeping our airconditioning going around the clock. Id almost forgotten the windows even opened. We should not let this happen again. Its time for us to change our habits if necessary.59. Why did the author and his wife try a new diet?A. To take special kind of food.B. To respond to climate change.C. To lose weight.D. To improve their health.60. The words “tipping points” in paragragh4 probably refer to _.A. freezing points B. burning points C. melting points D. boiling points61. It can be inferred from the passage that _.A. it is necessary to keep the airconditioning on all the timeB. it seems possible for every household to cut emissions of CO2 C. the average US household produces about 3,000 pounds of CO2 a monthD. the average European household produces about 1,000 pounds of CO2 a month62. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?A. Saving energy starts at home B. Change Our Habits Begins at WorkC. Changing Climate sounds Reasonable D. Reducing Emissions of CO2 Proves DifficultDIf you see someone drowning(溺水), speed is very important. Once you get him out of the water, if he isnt breathing, you have four minutes before his brain is completely damaged. Support his neck, tilt(使翘起) his head and press his chin upwards. This stops the tongue blocking the airway in the throat and is sometimes enough to get him breathing again. If that doesnt work, start mouthtomouth breathing. Press his nostrils(鼻孔) together with your fingers. Open your mouth and take a deep breath. Blow into his lungs until his chest rises, then remove your mouth and watch his chest fall. Repeat 12 times a minute. Keep doing until help arrives. To bring a child back to life, keep your lips around his mouth and nose gently blow into his mouth. Give the first four breaths as quickly as possible to fill the blood with oxygen. If, in spite of your efforts, he starts turning a blue grey color, you can feel no pulse, then pressing is the last chance of saving his life. With arms straight, rock forwards, pressing down on the lower half of the breast bone. Dont be too hard or you may break a rib (肋骨). Check how effective you are seeing if his color improves or his pulse becomes independent to your chest pressing. If this happens, stop the pressing. Otherwise continue until rescue arrives. If you dont want to be drowned, there are some useful tips for you:Never swim alone.Never swim at a beech if there is no life guard.Never swim after a meal or when you feel hungryNever rely on rings, floats or other swimming aids. You may lose them or they may let you sink.Do not stay in the water too long, especially if it is cold. Before you dive, be sure that the water is deep enough and that you will not hit anybody.Never go out if you cant swim or if you are not wearing a life jacket. 63. The passage is mainly about _.A. how to save people out of the waterB. how to give first aid to a drowning person and how to keep safe when swimmingC. how to do mouthtomouth breathingD. how to save a child from a river64. Once you get a drowning man out of the water if he isnt breathing, you must first _.A. get him breathing againB. take him to the nearest hospital as soon as possibleC. find someone to help youD. call the First Aid Centre65. If the drowning child has no pulse, _.A. pressing his chin upwards is enough to get him breathingB. blowing air into his mouth is sure to save his lifeC. pressing his nostrils together with your fingers can workD. pressing is the last chance of saving his life66.
