him 42 and that it would be 43 if he did fall. no, all that 44 to him was to accomplish the task, to feel the experience of running fully and freely. i learned a lot from that 45 and experience, and have successfully brought that lesson with me in my many pursuits in life.26arodebstartedcbroke dparked27adownboutsidectowarddover28aplayingbsmilingcrollingdrunning29awayblengthctimeddistance30aeven (共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分)第一节:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的选项中选出最佳选项。a many people believe henry ford invented the automobile (汽车). but henry ford did not start to build his first car until 1896. that was eleven years after two germans developed the worlds first automobile. many people believe henry ford invented the production line that moved a cars parts to the worker, instead of making the worker move to the parts. that is not true, either. many factory owners used methods of this kind before ford. what henry ford did was to use other peoples ideas and make them better. and he made the whole factory a moving production line. in the early days of the automobile, almost every car maker raced his cars. it was the best way of gaining public notice. henry ford decided to build a racing car. fords most famous race was his first one. it was also the last race in which he drove the car himself. the race was in 1901, at a field near detroit. all of the most famous cars had entered, but only two were left: the winton and fords. the winton was famous for its speed. most people thought the race was over before it began. the winton took an early lead. but halfway through the race, it began to lose power. ford started to gain. and near the end of the race, he took the lead. ford won the race and defeated the winton. his name appeared in newspapers and he became well-known all over the united states. within weeks of the race, henry ford formed a new automobile company. in 1903, a doctor in detroit bought the first car from the company. that sale was the beginning of henry fords dream. ford said: “i will build a motor car for the great mass of people. it will be large enough for the family, but small enough for one person to operate and care for. it will be built of the best materials. it will be built by the best men to be employed. and it will be built with the simplest plans that modern engineering can produce. it will be so low in price that no man making good money will be unable to own one.” the model t was a car of that kind. it only cost $850. it was a simple machine that drivers could depend on. doctors bought the model t. so did farmers, even criminals. they considered it the fastest and surest form of transportation. americans loved the model t. they wrote stories and songs about it. thousands of model ts were built in the first few years.46what do we know about henry ford from paragraph 1 ? a. he knew how to improve auto parts. b. he produced the first car in the world. c. he made good use of ideas from others. d. he invented the production line.47“that sale” in paragraph 4 refers to _. a. the selling of ford cars at reduced prices b. the selling of a car to a detroit doctor c. the sale of model t to the mass of people d. the sales target for the ford company48what was henry fords dream according to the text? a. producing cars for average customers. b. building racing cars of simple design. c. designing more car models. d. starting more companies.b animals are more like us than we ever imaginedthey feel pain, they experience stress, they show affection, excitement and loveall these findings have been made by scientists in recent yearsand such results are beginning to change how we view animals. strangely enough, some of this research was sponsored by fast food companies like mcdonalds and kfcpressured by animal rights groups , these companies felt they had to fund scientists researching the emotional and mental states of animals. mcdonalds, for instance, funded studies on pig behavior at purdue university, indianathis research found that pigs seek affection and easily become depressed if left alone or prevented from playing with each otherif they become depressed, they soon become physically illbecause of this, and other similar studies, the european union has banned the use of isolating pig stalls from 2010in germany, the government is encouraging pig farmers to give each pig 20 seconds of human contact a day, and to provide them with toys to prevent them from fighting. other scientists have shown that animals think and behave like humans. koko, the 300-pound gorilla at the gorilla foundation in northern california, for instance, has been taught sign language. koko can now understand several thousand english words, more than many humans who speak english as a second languageon human iq tests, she scores between 70 and 95. before such experiments, humans thought language skills were absent from the animal kingdomother myths are also being overturned, like the belief that animals lack self-awarenessstudies have also shown that animals mourn their dead, and that they play for pleasure. these striking similarities between animal and human behavior have led some to ask a question: “if you believe in evolution, how cant you believe that animals have feelings that human beings have?” until recently, scientists believed that animals behaved by instinct and that what appeared to be learned behavior was merely genetically-programmed activitybut as koko the gorilla shows, this is not the casein fact, learning is passed from parent to offspring far more often than not in the animal kingdom. so what implications does this knowledge have for humans? because of this, should we ban hunting and animal testing? should we close zoos? such questions are being raised by many academics and politiciansharvard and 25 other american law schools have introduced courses on animal rightsgermany meanwhile, recently guaranteed animal rights in its constitutionthe first country to do so.49. mcdonalds and kfc give money to support scientist to do research on animals, because_ athey are international big companies. bthey are pressured by animal right groups. cthey love animals. dthey earn a large amount of money and want to do some good deeds.50the research on pigs at purdue university shows that_ apigs love being alone. bpigs need affection. cpigs easily become physically ill. dpigs dont like to play with each other.51which of the following statements is not true? asome animals have developed language skills. bsome animals can show their feelings. canimals enjoy playing with each other. danimals become indifferent when one of them dies.52should we ban hunting and animal testing? ayes. bno cnot mentioned dnot certain cone picture in the wonder book of knowledge i had as a little boy showed a man reading a book while floating in the dead sea. what a miracle! how would it feel to lie back in water so thick with salt that it was impossible to sink?fed by the jordan river and smaller streams, the dead sea is the lowest point on the earths surface, and its water is ten times saltier than the mediterranean. with evaporation(蒸发) its only outlet, salt and other minerals become super-concentrated.earlier this year, i drove down the long, steep hill to realize my dream. the shoreline was a broad area of bare salt-mud, but the water edge was far out of sight. had somebody pulled the dead seas plug? i wondered. eli dior, an israeli official, explained the problem: “ the dead sea is drying up. every year, the surface drops about one meter, and as the water level falls, shadow areas are left high and dry.”over the last half-century, the five neighboring countries have collectively diverted nearly all the water flowing into the dead sea to meet human and agriculture needs. result: the dead sea is being emptied.with population in the region set to double at least in the next 50 years, there is little hope of restoring the water being diverted for human consumption. no country has a drop to spare for the dead sea, where they know it will just evaporate. to dream of opening the dams and restoring natural balance is plainly unrealistic.yet one ambitious high-tech dream may turn out to be not only the salvation of the dead sea but also a ticket to peace around its shores. the “red-dead” is a proposed $5 billion project to bring sea water some 240 kilometers by pipeline and canal from the red sea to the dead sea. the red-dead may be the only solution, but even if the project is carried out successfully, the dead sea will be 10 to 20 meters lower than now and two thirds of its current size.whatever the future holds, the dead seas magical mix of sun, mud, sea and salt will surely survive. many might complain that the dead sea is half emptybut for me the dead sea will always be half full.53. which is the best title of the passage?a. dead seamiracle of the worldb. save the environment of the dead seac. why is the dead sea so salty?d. slow drying up of the dead sea54. according to the passage, the dead seas being emptied is mainly caused by _a. a severe reduction of the water flowing into the sea.b. rapid evaporation of the water in the dead sea area.c. the increasing quantity of water drawn from the sea.d. very low annual rainfall in the dead sea area.55. which of the following statements will the author probably support?a. if the dead sea dried up, great natural disasters would happen in the region.b. though the dead sea is drying up gradually, it will not die.c. the five neighboring countries should stop diverting water from the jordan river.d. the dead sea will not survive no matter what people do to save it.第二节:在第5660题中,阅读下面内容,选出最佳选项。选项中有两项是多余选项。what do you most look forward to about a new school
