Why do you think the blue van hit the girl? 6. What was the number 93426 used for by the police? 7. How did the policeman draw the conclusion about the blue van? 8. Why did Mary apply to learn to play tennis? It was a warm sunny morning. Larry Jackson got up pretty early. He had an appointment with his coach to meet in the tennis club. He was both delighted and thrilled to attend a game to challenge some of the professional players. Their tennis club consisted of a dozen of tennis lovers, some of whom used to be professionals. Although he had been defeated by them over and over again, Larry was always optimistic about the future, hoping one day he could acquire some advanced skills so as to become a professional himself. His coach, Mr. Bradley, had always thought Larry was a gifted tennis player since he could handle the ball and the racket really well at even five. Mr. Bradley had arranged Larry to play against some other players of his age, and he had won almost every match. Although his coach was extremely strict with him and treated him without mercy, Larry took it as essential for his career and attended training constantly with great enthusiasm. He knew it well that only in this way could he realize his dreams. After a brief breakfast, he slid into his car, fastened the safety belt and sped off. While driving, he found thousands and thousands of bees appeared out of nowhere, hovering around. They were practically bumping onto the windshield, making it dirtier and dirtier. He slowed down and drove cautiously. For a moment, he had to depend on his memory of previous journeys to move forward. “I might get involved in an accident”, he murmured. “No, Larry! Think positive!” After turning around a corner, for no reason at all, the bees vanished in an instant. He was smiling in relief when he caught sight of an accident. A blue van running ahead of him knocked a cyclist over the road. Instead of stopping to take care of the victim, the blue van sped up and in no time Larry lost sight of it. Larry stopped by the road, got off and rushed to the cyclist. It was a girl. Thanks to her helmet, she was only injured in her arms and legs. The injury in her leg was bleeding. Larry applied some pressure on the wound, trying to stop the bleeding. “Are you OK?” asked Larry. “I dont know!” the girl replied, “The pain in my leg is unbearable now.” “I should call 911.” Larry took out his cell phone. “Madame, I want to report an emergency. A girl was knocked off her bike but the car has run away.” “How is the girl?” “She is bleeding very badly and I think you should send an ambulance right now.” “Could you tell me the number on the nearest lamp post?” About fifty yards on his left stood a lamp post. Larry ran over and reported the number on it. “Its 93426.” “Thank you! And please stay with the injured girl; help is on its way!” Larry now noticed that girls face had been stung by the bees and had swollen up, almost covering her eyes. “Am I dying”, the girl asked in a faint voice. “Of course not. But dont try to squeeze the water out in the swelling. Doctors are coming and they know how to treat it right.” Larry sprayed some medicine which they used to cure injuries in sports on the girls legs and arms. “Ouch!” the girl screamed. “The pain will be severe for just an instant. But you need it! Dont expose the injuries directly to the air, for you might get infected.” “It feels better now. Thanks a million! Whats you name?” “Larry Jackson! They call me L or Jack, for convenience.” “ Hello, L, Im Baker. Mary Baker.” “Can you bake?” he joked. The girl chuckled. “Of course I can. But the bread I made tastes horrible.”Larry smiled back. Approximately five minutes later, Larry heard the siren of the ambulance. There also came a police car. After the ambulance had left with the girl, the policeman enquired Larry thoroughly and demanded that he should not leave out any useful information. “Did you see the plate number of the van, Larry?” “No. My windshield was covered with killed bees and I could hardly see the road, sir.” “It doesnt make sense! You could see nothing but a van knock down the girl.” “Yes, sir! Come on! Do you suspect that I knocked the girl down?” “I was not saying that. Besides, where are you going?” “I was driving to my tennis club.” “Which tennis club?” “Bradleys, sir.” “Ok. Boy! I have to submit a report about this case and most probably I will contact you sometime later.” “Any time, sir. Here is my cell phone number and my home address. But, could I put forward a proposal so that you can put your hand on this van guy who is guilty?” “Go ahead!” “The van must have passed our tennis club. And we had a camera fixed to the entrance. Therefore, Im sure we can see the plate number of it.” “Sounds great!” With the police car following him, Larry drove to his club. Roughly half an hour later, the police came out, with a few printed pictures in his hand. “Larry, I should give the credit to you. I can draw a conclusion that the van is linked to some other cases. What you did is pretty impressive.” “Im just trying to be a good citizen, sir. Oh, oh, please keep me informed of the girl. Im genuinely concerned about her. A week later, the local police announced a gang of four had been caught. Apart from being guilty for that road accident, they had been involved in a conflict with some other guys in a construction site. They set the unfinished building on fire deliberately and were running away in that blue van when they hit Mary Baker. Mary Baker was back on her feet again. One day, she came to Bradleys tennis club and applied for a membership. Her sudden appearance attracted Larrys attention. “Hey, there! Its great to see you!” “I came to learn to play tennis! Thank you for the help you offered that day”. “Dont mention it! Anyway, what was the matter with you that day! You were riding in the middle of the road!” “I think the bees were to blame. I couldnt see anything with the sharp pain in my face.” “I can understand that!” “Can you instruct me in playing tennis, with your expertise?” “Thats out of question! Here in this club, we have access to the best facilities and the best players to play with. I can assist you with your learning.” “Id appreciate it if you can do that! I will make s
