His mother was almost entirely deaf, so Alexander became interested in helping deaf people communicate and in deaf education. This interest led him to invent the microphone. He found that by pressing his lips against his mothers forehead, he could make his mother understand what he was saying. He believed that one should always be curious and his most famous saying was:Leave the beaten track occasionally and dive into the woods. Every time you do you will be certain to find something that you have never seen before. Follow it up, explore all around it, and before you know it, you will have something worth thinking about to occupy your mind. All really big discoveries are the result of thought. It was this exploring around problems and his dynamic spirit that led to his most famous invention - the telephone in 1876. Bell never set out to invent the telephone and what he was trying to design was a multiple telegraph. This original telegraph sent a message over distances using Morse code (a series of dots tapped out along a wire in a particular order). But only one message could go at a time. Bell wanted to improve it so that it could send several messages at the same time. He designed a machine that would separate different sound waves and allow different conversations to be held at the same time. But he found the problem difficult to solve. One day as he was experimenting with one end of a straw joined to a deaf mans ear drum and the other to a piece of smoked glass, Bell noticed that when he spoke into the ear, the straw drew sound waves on the glass. Suddenly he had a flash of inspiration. If sound waves could be reproduced in a moving electrical current, they could be sent along a wire. In searching to improve the telegraph, Bell had invented the first telephone!Bell was fully aware of the importance of his invention and wrote to his father:The day is coming when telegraph wires will be laid on to houses just like water or gas and friends will talk to each other without leaving home. The patent was given in 1876, but it was not until five days later that Bell sent his first telephone message to his assistant Watson. The words have now become famous:Mr. Watson - come here - I want to see you.Alexander Graham Bell was not a man to rest and he interested himself in many other areas of invention. He experimented with helicopter designs and flying machines. While searching for a kite strong enough to carry a man into the air, Bell experimented putting triangles together and discovered the tetrahedron (四面体) shape. Being very stable, it has proved invaluable in the design of bridges.Bell was an inventor all his life. He made his first invention at eleven and his last at seventy- five. Although he is most often associated with the invention of the telephone, he was indeed a continuing searcher after practical solutions to improve the quality of everybodys life.1. I knew some people would be uncomfortable around Stevie so I closely watched him for the first week. After the first week Stevie had gained my staffs respect, and within a month my trucker regulars had adopted him as their official truck stop mascot (吉祥物). He was eager to laugh and eager to please, but fierce in his attention to his duties. Our only problem was persuading him to wait to clean a table until after the customers were finished. One morning Stevie missed work. I heard he was in hospital getting something put in his heart. One morning several months later when word came that he was out of surgery. Frannie, my head waitress, did a little dance in the aisle when she heard the good news. “OK, Frannie, what was that all about?” Belle Ringer, our regular customer, asked. “Stevie will be back.” But she then sighed, “But I dont know how he and his mom are going to handle all the bills.” Later that day Frannie handed a napkin to me, and three twenty dollar bills fell onto my desk when I opened it. On the outside was printed “Something For Stevie”. In later times, we often received such napkins. Today is Thanksgiving. Stevie is supposed to be back to work. Stevie couldnt stop grinning as he pushed through the doors and headed for the back room where his apron and busing cart were waiting. “Work can wait for a minute, Stevie,” I said. “To celebrate you coming back, breakfast for you and your mother is on me.” We stopped in front of the big table. Its surface was covered with dozens of folded paper napkins. “First thing you have to do is clean up this mess,” I said. Stevie looked at me, and then pulled out one of the napkins. It had “Something for Stevie” printed on the outside. As he picked it up, two $10 bills fell onto the table. I turned to his mother. “Theres more than $10,000 in cash and checks on that table, all from truckers and trucking companies that heard about your problems. Happy Thanksgiving.” I saw tears rolling in Stevie and his moms eyes.5. From the first two paragraphs we learn Stevie _. The faster and more strategically we remove those blocks, the faster and more successfully we achieve change. Yet, change efforts often stall (搁置) precisely because those decisions dont happen. The question is why?Avoid Changing By Addition. Technically, deciding to do something new without killing something old is not a decision at all. It is merely an addition. When an executive announces that her business will change to become a luxury service provider, technically it is not a decision until she also states that they will not provide low cost services to price-sensitive customers anymore. When a sales manager declares that his strategy this quarter will require his salespeople to spend more time strengthening existing customer relationships, he has only made an addition until he also declares that they should spend little time on something else like hunting for new customers.Your hands might be sweating at the mere thought of telling your team to ignore some group of paying customers or to not spend time hunting for new business, even if you really want to see the change happen. But this change-by-addition approach can be a death blow.Avoid Constant Tradeoffs (权衡). When team leaders fail to decide which old directions are going to be sacrificed in service of the new direction, the tradeoff doesnt magically disappear. Constant tradeoffs create two major problems for change efforts. First, it is highly unlikely that each team member will independently arrive at the same conclusion about what to do and what not to do. Part of the team will choose to move in one direction while the other part moves in another direction.Second, psychologists have shown that making tradeoffs consumes our overall mental capacity and causes us to make poorer judgments in completely unrelated situations. When your team has to spend a long morning making tradeoffs, it leads to long afternoons of either staring at the wall and web-surfing, or making poor choices for their customers, their workloads, and their budgets. To Lead Is To Decide. Making change decisions is an activity that the average person will go to great lengths to avoid. That might be a key element of what makes great leaders great. Great leaders have come in all personality types. But the one thing they all seem to have in common is their willingness to decide when others could not.Title: To Move Ahead You Have to Know What to Leave BehindPassage outlineSupporting detailsThe significance of decisionsDecisions are important because they (1) _ whether we can achieve change.Avoid making only (2) _ Making a decision without (3) _ something old is but addition. To be a real luxury service provider, an executive must stop (4) _ low cost service.A sales manager who wants to strengthen existing customer service should require his staff to stop (5) _ new customers.
