My view of English dictionary For the fact, most students dont have enough knowledge of English dictionary and dont use a dictionary frequently. Whats more, there are many problems for them to use a dictionary. After learning the Dictionary curriculum, I have some views on how to choose a useful dictionary and how to use a dictionary correctly. We are the English major students, as the study progress, only one dictionary can not solve our problems in the study. In order to learn well, we must need several dictionaries. So we should know something about the different characteristics of the dictionary.English dictionary is a necessary tool for foreign language learners. So its important to learn the correctly use of the learners dictionary. It can help you learn the English knowledge easier and improve your learning ability. Firstly, it can help us understand the English words meaning, through the dictionary, we can also know the correct pronunciation and the extra-linguistic information of a word. It is also helpful for our vocabulary learning. Secondly, it can enrich our knowledge and improve our thinking ability. We can know a lot of useful information from dictionary. Finally, it can help us learn word-formation sentences. As we often need to write composition, but what we write sometimes is simple and most of which is rarely use compound sentences and complex sentences. With a dictionary, we can understand and master words patterns, and improve the ability to construct sentences, so as to improve English writing ability. In a word, dictionary is very important for our studying.At present, there are several common dictionaries for college students to use. Such as Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary of Current English, Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, Collins COBUILD English Language Dictionary, Cambridge International English Dictionary. All of them are belonging to learning English dictionary; they are for non-native English learners; they are suitable for our English major students to use. But with so many dictionaries, which one should we choose?First of all, you should choose a Monolingual English dictionary. Because its explanation is written in English, if you often read the explanation, it can not only help you familiar with the interpretation and grammar of words, but also cultivate the habit of thinking in English.These dictionaries have the English version, in order to make simple explanation, these dictionary take the same method which is control the vocabulary of words. For example, the vocabulary of Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English controls in 2000 words, and in the use of the dictionary which limits in further. Several other dictionaries definitions of the vocabulary defined as follows: Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary of Current English is 3500, Collins COBUILD Learners Dictionary is 2500 and Cambridge International English Dictionary is 2000. Through the limit for the number of vocabulary, it will help English learners understand definitions easily. If you dont have the habit to use Monolingual English dictionary, you can also choose a Bilingual dictionary. Secondly, you should choose the dictionary for which use International Phonetic Alphabet and headwords should better have marks. Some dictionaries, like the American dictionaries always use their phonetic symbols which are hard for Chinese students to understand.Thirdly, the dictionary should have lots of examples. Sometimes these examples are more important than the definitions, because they can tell the readers how to use a word correctly. And they representative the using of English words and sentences which can help us understand the words meaning better. The four dictionaries all use a lot of examples, Longman Dictionary is up to 100,000, and Cambridge Dictionary is nearly 90,000. These examples are the sentences from the corpus which have a very good exemplary role.Finally, the size of the dictionary should be suitable. As an intermediate level learner, you must have at least two dictionaries, a large dictionary which included 50,000 to 100,000 words and phrases and a portable pocket dictionary which included 30,000 to 40,000 words and phrases.To sum up, the four dictionaries are suitable for moderate English learners; their explanations are concise and easy to understand. Their illustration and usage are very detailed, and the authority is beyond doubt. From these aspects into consideration, they are suitable for our Chinese students.Then how to use a dictionary correctly and effectively? I think we should choose our own dictionary according to different situations. As we are college students, we can choose an English-English Dictionary. In order to realize the utilization of the dictionary fully, we must first understand the dictionarys special symbols and instructions.
