decided to hold an international festival of music, dance and theatre in edinburgh. the idea was to reunite europe after the second world war.it quickly attracted famous names such as alec guinness, richard burton, dame margot fonteyn and marlene dietrich as well as the big symphony orchestras(交响乐团)it became a fixed event every august and now attracts 400,000 people yearly.at the same time, the “fringe” appeared as a challenge to the official festival. eight theatre groups turned up uninvited in 1947,in the belief that everyone should have the right to perform, and they did so in a public house disused for years.soon, groups of students firstly from edinburgh university, and later from the universities of oxford and cambridge, durham and birmingham were making the journey to the scottish capital each summer to perform theatre by littleknown writers of plays in small church halls to the people of edinburgh.today the“fringe”,once less recognized, has far outgrown the festival with around 1,500 performances of theatre, music and dance on every one of the 21 days it lasts. and yet as early as 1959,with only 19 theatre groups performing, some said it was getting too big.a paid administrator was first employed only in 1971,and today there are eight administrators working all year round and the number rises to 150 during august itself. in 2004 there were 200 places housing 1,695 shows by over 600 different groups from 50 different countries. more than 1.25 million tickets were sold.21what was the purpose of edinburgh festival at the beginning?ato bring europe together again. b. to honor heroes of world war .cto introduce young theatre groups. d. to attract great artists from europe.22why did some uninvited theatre groups come to edinburgh in 1947?athey owned a public house there. b. they came to take up a challenge.cthey thought they were also famous.dthey wanted to take part in the festival.23who joined the“fringe”after it appeared?apopular writers. buniversity students.cartists from around the world. dperformers of music and dance.24we may learn from the text that edinburgh festival_.ahas become a nonofficial eventbhas gone beyond an art festivalcgives shows all year rounddkeeps growing rapidlybwe tend to think of plants as the furniture of the natural world. they dont move, they dont make sounds and they dont seem to respond to anythingat least not very quickly. but as is often the case, our humans view of the world misses quite a lot. plants talk to each other all the time. and the language is chemical.over the years, scientists have reported that different types of plants, from trees to tomatoes, release compounds(化合物) into the air to help neighboring plants. these chemical warnings all have the same purpose to spread information about one plants disease or infestation so other plants can defend themselves. but exactly how plants receive and act on many of these signals is still mysterious.in this weeks proceedings of the national academy of sciences, researchers in japan offered some explanations. they had identified one chemical message and traced it all the way from release to action.the scientists looked at tomato plants infested by a common pest, the cutworm. the researchers studied leaves from exposed and unexposed plants. they found one compound showed up more often in the exposed plants. the substance is called hexvic. when the scientists fed hexvic to cutworms,it knocked down their survival rate by 17%.the scientists identified the source of hexvic, and sprayed it lightly over healthy plants. those plants were then able to start producing the cutwormkilling hexvic. researchers confirmed that uninfected plants have to build their own weapons to fight off bugs and disease. how do they know when to play defense? they are warned first by their friendly plant neighbors.it is a complex tale, and it may be happening in more plant species than tomatoes. it may also be happening with more chemical signals that are still unknown to us. further studies are needed to increase agricultural efficiency.25how do plants warn their neighbors?athey make use of winds. bthey release some chemicals.cthey identify the chemicals. dthey are exposed early.26whats the function of hexvic?ait damages the cutworms body. bit shows up more.cit cures the disease. dit sprays over healthy plants.27it can be inferred from the text that_athere are not chemical signalsbthe phenomenon may be happening in less plant species than tomatoescfarmers may benefit from the further studiesdplants are warned first by their neighbors28the passage is likely to appear in _aa newspaper advertisement ba physics textbookca science magazine da finance reportcguide to stockholm university libraryour nutrient availability seem to have trumped the benefits of increased carbon dioxide, “said researchers from the national university of singapore.45 percent of the species studied now reach smaller adult sizes than they did in the past. the researchers point out that warmer temperatures and changing habitats, caused by climate change, are possible reasons for the shrinking of creatures.“we do not yet know the exact mechanisms involved, or why some organisms are getting smaller while others are unaffected,” the researchers said. “until we understand more, we could be risking negative consequences that we cant yet quantify.”the change was big in cold-blooded animals. only two decades of warmer temperatures were enough to make reptiles (爬行动物) smaller. an increase of only 1 caused nearly a 10 percent increase in metabolism (新陈代谢). greater use of energy resulted in tiny tortoises and little lizards. fish are smaller now too. though overfishing has played a part in reducing numbers, experiments show that warmer temperatures also stop fish growth. there is a recent report on warmer temperatures negative effects on plankton (浮游生物), the base of the marine ecosystem.warm-blooded animals werent immune from the size change caused by climate change. many birds are now smaller. mammals have been miniaturized too. soay sheep are thinner. red deer are weaker. and polar bears are smaller, compared with historical records. this isnt the first time this has happened in earths history.55 million years ago, a warming event similar to the current climate change caused bees, spiders and ants to shrink by 50 to 75 percent over several thousand years. that event happened over a longer time than the current climate change.the speed of modern climate change could mean organisms may not respond or adapt quickly enough, especially those with long generation times. so, it is likely that more negative influences of climate change will be shown in the future.32. which of the following would be the best title for the passage?a. why do some species become smaller? b. species become smaller as climate warms.c. climate change has many negative effects.d. how does climate change in earths history?33. the underlined word “trumped” in the first paragraph can be replaced by “_”.a. beaten b. increased c. strengthened d. equaled34. what can we learn from the passage? a. cold-blooded animals become smaller because of the lack of food. b. birds have suffered more from climate change than fish. c. climate change has even affected plankton negatively. d. the warming event has never happened in earths history before.35. what is the authors attitude toward climate change? a. optimistic. b. concerned. c. indifferent. d. confident. 第二节(共5小题:每小题2分, your mind. 36._ many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. these people have little motivation once they arrive home. laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. by adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. others take a more positive approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone. 37._ some people fight laziness by removing the temptations(诱惑)that surround them. a television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much tv often contributes to laziness. create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for a child to promote responsibility.38._ laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately. 39._ be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. others in the home may eventually follow your example and perform their own task. it is difficult to practice laziness when you are surrounded by motivated people. 40._ enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling you to have more energy and help lift your spirits. a. knowing how to fight laziness is important. b. one way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep. c. to fight household laziness, lead by example. d. complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film. e. finally, taking exercise regularly can help you fight laziness. f. with strong determination, you will be able to achieve your goal. g. laziness sets in when you no longer feel in charge of your own mind.第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节 45分)第一节 完形填空 (20题 每小题1.5分
