“hobsons choice”. it is often used to describe a difficult choice. but that is not what it really means. its real meaning is to have no choice at all. the hobson in the expression was thomas hobson. mr. hobson owned many horses in cambridge. mr. hobson often rented his horses to the students at cambridge university. but he didnt really trust them to take good care of the horses. so, he had a rule that prevented the students from riding his best horses. they could take the horse that was nearest the stable door. or, they could not take any horse at all. thus, a hobsons choice was really no choice.another expression for having no real choice is “between a rock and a hard place”. it is often used to describe a difficult situation with few choices none of them is good. for example, your boss may ask you to work late. but you have plans to go to a movie with your friends. if you refuse to work, your boss may get angry. but if you do not go to the movies with your friends, they may get angry. so what do you do? you are “caught between a rock and a hard place”. another expression “between the devil and the deep blue sea” also gives you a choice between two equally dangerous things. its meaning seems clear. you can choose the devil and his burning fires of hell. or, you can choose to drown in the sea. some experts in lexicology (词汇学) say the expression comes from the days of wooden ships. the “devil” is a word for a seam between two pieces of wood along the waterline of a ship. if the seam or crack between the two pieces of wood begins to leak (漏), then a sailor must fix it. the sailor ordered to make the repairs was in a dangerous situation. he was hung over the side of the ship, working “between the devil and the deep blue sea”. there is still another expression that describes a situation with only bad choices “on the horns of a dilemma” (左右为难). the dictionary says a dilemma is a situation in which you must make a decision between two equally balanced choices. when your dilemma has horns (角), making a choice becomes impossible. when you are “on the horns of a dilemma”, no matter which horn you choose, something bad will happen.41. we could learn job for which they would be responsible for the rest of that school year.some jobs were more interesting than others, and the children were eager to be given one of the best ones. when giving them out, the teacher took into account which pupils had been most responsible during the previous year. during the previous year rita had carried out the teachers instructions perfectly. all the children knew rita would be given the best job.but there was a big surprise. each child received a normal job. but ritas job was very different. she was given a little box containing some sand and one ant. though the teacher insisted that this ant was very special, rita felt disappointed. most of her classmates felt sorry for her. even her father became very angry with the teacher and he encouraged rita to pay no attention to this insignificant pet. however, rita preferred to show the teacher her error by doing something special with that job of little interest.rita started investigating all about her little ant and gave the ant the best food, and it grew quite a bit bigger.one day, a man, who looked very important, came into their classroom and declared, “your class has been chosen to accompany me, this summer, on a journey to the tropical rain forest, where we will investigate all kinds of insects. among all the schools of this region, your class has best cared for the little ant.”that day the school was filled with joy and celebration. everyone thanked rita for having been so patient and responsible. and many children learnt that to be given the most important task you responsibility and intelligence bring good luckcsports accounts for a growing amount of income made on the sales of commercial time by television companies. many television companies have used sports to attract views from particular sections of the general public, and then they have sold audiences to advertisers.an attraction of sports programs for the major u.s. media company is that events are often held on saturday and sunday afternoons the slowest time periods of the week for general television viewing. sport events are the most popular weekend programs, especially among male viewers who may not watch much television at other times during the week. this means the television networks are able to sell advertising time at relatively high prices during what normally would be dead time for programming.media corporations also use sports to attract commercial sponsors that might take their advertising dollars elsewhere if television stations did not report certain sports. the people in the advertising departments of major corporations realize that sports attract male viewers. they also realize that most business travelers are men and that many men make family decisions on the purchases of computers, cars and life insurance.golf and tennis are special cases for television programming. these sports attract few viewers, and the ratings(收视率) are unusually low. however, the audience for these sports is attractive to certain advertisers. it is made up of people from the highest income groups in the united states, including many lawyers and business managers. this is why television reporting of golf and tennis is sponsored by companies selling high-priced cars, business and personal computers, and holiday trips. this is also why the networks continue to carry these programs regardless of low ratings. advertisers are willing to pay high fees to reach high-income consumers and those managers who make decisions to buy thousands of “company cars” and computers. with such viewers, these programs dont need high ratings to stay on the air.51. television sports programs on weekend afternoons _.a. result in more sport events b. get more viewers to play sportsc. make viewers.b. rich viewers contribute most to television companies.c. sports are gaining importance in advertising on television.d. commercial advertisers are the major sponsors of sport events. dscientists have announced that they have cloned(克隆) the first human embryo(胚胎). this has caused much debate round the world. on the one hand, some scientists point out that if you clone an embryo, you can produce valuable human tissues(组织)such as bone or lung tissuethat could be used to save human lives. on the other hand, many people, including some scientists, disagree and are afraid that, if mankind toys with nature in this way, we may be on our way to producing a real-life frankensteins monster(怪物).cloning is producing an exact copy of a plant or an animal using its cells. the first mammal to be cloned successfully from an adult cell was dolly the sheep. she was born in 1996 and died in early 2003, at a much younger age than normal. when she was born, many people were worried that cloning would lead to more diseases in the animal world. however, in general the scientists were praised for their wonderful scientific advance.ian wilmut, the scottish scientist who created dolly, is shocked that some scientists are now considering cloning human beings. although he researches cloning, his intention has never been to create copies of humans. instead, he thinks research efforts should concentrate on creating new tissues and organs that can be used to cure diseases like cancer. however, some people believe that cloning humans embryos with the intention of destroying them shows no respect for human life.even though human cloning is causing a lot of anxiety, it is good news for faye wilson, a 41-year-old saleswoman who cannot have a baby. “ i am anxious to have a child of my own,” she says. “i dont want to adopt someone elses childif i had the chance, i would have a cloned baby right now.”while cloning human embryos is not legal in many countries, some scientists are already pushing ahead with research in order to produce a cloned human baby. severino antinori, an italian physician, has declared that he wants to be the first to clone a human being.in china, scientists have focused their efforts on cloning animals, as well as cloned tissues to be used in medical treatment. china has succeeded in producing clones of cows and goats, and continues to research ways in which cloning can benefit mankind.56. paragraph1 is mainly about _.a. different views on cloning human embryosb. the ben
