Model VI Unit 1 ArtPeriod 1 Warming up, Pre-reading, Reading and Comprehending曾都一中 向祯Part 1 Analysis of the teaching material and the studentsThis is the first teaching period of this unit. Warming up gives Ss four questions to discuss, aiming at preparing Ss for both the content and the grammar of the unit. Pre-reading provides three questions to help Ss focus on the topic of the reading passage. Reading mainly introduces the history of western painting. The author introduces four development stages and important artistic styles in Western art over the past 1,500 years. Comprehending consists of four exercises for Ss to do so as to help Ss to get a better understanding of the text.Since the Ss are not familiar with western paintings, the content needs to be reorganized. The topic can be started with art and then transformed into western paintings. The structure of the text is very clear, so I will focus on training Ss ability to seek details. In order to help the Ss understand the text better, give some examples with pictures in each stage. Part 2 Teaching goals1. Knowledge goals key words and phrases: realistic, abstract, religion, religious, sculpture, gallery, belief, consequent, consequently, aim, symbol, value, focus, possession, convince, impressionism, impressionist, shadow, ridiculous, nowadays, attempt, predict, the Renaissance, focus on, a great deal to learn about some major movements in western art and how art has changed stylistically over the centuries.2. Ability goals Enable the students to talk about the short history of Western painting. To improve the students reading ability, especially their skimming and scanning ability.3. Emotion or moral goals To arouse Ss interests in art. To develop Ss self-teaching ability and cooperation. Part 3 Teaching important & difficult points To enable the Ss to learn about the history of Western art and to develop their reading ability. To enable the Ss to talk about their opinions on art.Part 4 Teaching methods Task-based language teaching Presentation teachingPart 5 Teaching proceduresStep 1 warming up & pre-reading (5 min.)1. Ask Ss to list some forms of art, and encourage them to name some famous paintings and painters both home and abroad.2. on the basis of the information above, lead in the reading text by asking how much they know about Western paintingsPurpose of the design:1. To inspire Ss interest in the topic and prepare the background information for the text.2. To train Ss divergent thinking(发散性思维).Step 2 Reading (30 min.)Task 1 Fast readingAsk Ss to skimming the text and answer the following questions:How many styles of Western painting are mentioned in the text? What are they?Purpose of the design: 1.to find out the structure of the text. 2. to develop Ss ability to conclude the main idea by going through sub-headingsTask 2 Careful reading Ask Ss to read the period one by one to get details. To help Ss understand the text better by intuitional chart. 2. To train Ss ability to seek for the details in the text.Task 3 true or false? Ask Ss to do the True or false statements exercises according to the text.Purpose of the design: to check if Ss have comprehended the text.Step 3 post reading (10 min)Task 1: ask Ss to write down three new things they learned from the passage about western art. (Discuss in groups)Task 2: Extension activities: expressing likes and dislikes using new words in the unit.Purpose of the design: the two tasks are the extension of the text. They focus on the output of English, which are based on the better understanding of the text. Meanwhile, they also develop Ss teamwork Step 4 Homework1
