It is designed to help students think strategically about social functions of the English language in business settings. Some basic concepts of business communication will be introduced. The main contents will cover business writing basics (including style, tone, and readability), formats of business writings, business telephoning, company activity description, inquiry and goodwill communications. Teaching ApproachThe class sessions will mainly employ a lecture-discussion format combined with other in-class activities to practice and sharpen students English skills. This requires that the students should have a high degree of involvement in classroom activities. Each team shall work together to write:1. A memo or a goodwill message (5%)2. An inquiry or a reply to inquiry message (5%)l Students are expected to complete two assignments that will be graded in this semester. The course instructor will give details during the course. Please bear in mind that every student must participate in the teamwork and take an active role. The result of students teamwork should well reflect the standard of the complete group, not any individuals. l Written assignments are due on the date set by the instructor & the students and should be in standard business formats (Size 12, single spacing within paragraph). Please print your final version after each team member has proofread it. To guard against losses or recording errors, keep copies of the papers you turn in and retain the graded assignments that are returned to you throughout the semester. All papers should be handed in on time. (Electronic copies are not acceptable.) Late assignments will be penalized in proportion to dates delayed.
