usually short and they thus tend to leave out all the inessential words such as articles and auxiliary verbs Because of that headlines use short words wherever possible rather than long ones Sometimes of course the very briefness of headlines makes them ambiguous and difficult for the English language learners to understand Second journalists use a variety of techniques in order to attract and keep the reader s attention Some of them are pun play on words alliteration or rhyme Grammar changes Newspaper headline 1 Headlines often use a NOUN PHRASE that is a phrase without a verb Poor Service at and write a headline for it 1 July6 2005 London At 12 45 UK time today the name of the host city for the 2012 the name of the host city for the 2012 Olympic Games was being announced by the International Olympics Committee IOC in Singapore It was London s name had been announced twice before in 1908 and 1948 so it now has the distinction of being the first city to host the event three Unit4 Making the news 4 Practice in Use A July7 2005 London Central London was hit by four powerful bombs during this morning s rush hour London Underground lines and a bus were exploded by three of them 52 people were killed in the terrorist bomb attacks This was the first suicide bombing to take place in Western Europe The terrorist group of al Qaeda 基地组织 claimed responsibility Three bomb explosions have hit London Underground trains and a further bomb destroyed a bus in the city centre The Metropolitan Police Service has initially confirmed that 33 people have been killed in the four explosions on London s transport system this morning and said the overall number of wounded was as high as 700 in what are believed to be terrorist attacks The first reports were of an explosion at 08 49 BST UTC 1 on the Hammersmith City Line between Liverpool Street station and Aldgate East Explosions also occurred on a train between King s Cross and Russell Square and another at Edgware Road The remain trapped after a massive earthquake hit the country on Saturday China s Ministry of Commerce spokesman said on Tuesday The trapped workers belonged to a hydropower project undertaken by China International Water and Electric Corp near the China Nepal border The project around 67 kilometers from the quake s epicenter was severely damaged by the quake said Shen Danyang the spokesman A team comprised of 16 rescuers from China s Tibet Autonomous Region has managed to reach the damaged project site for rescue work Shen said without revealing more details of how the rescue work is progressing However according to quake relief headquarters in Jilung County in Tibet which is near the damaged site 25 of more than 200 Chinese stranded in the hydropower station were airlifted to safety on Tuesday afternoon by a Chinese helicopter Two of company s staff were confirmed dead Meanwhile Chinese aid workers who were sent for assistance
