The past and present of the OlympicNowadays the Olympic Games are well known all over the world and have come to be regarded as the worlds foremost sports competition where more than 200 nations participate every four years. More importantly, it is not only a simple athletic meet, but also a paradise for sports, friendship and peace. And it gradually becomes a unique cultural phenomenon which is called the “Olympic culture”. Many people know that the Olympic was originated from ancient Greek. But most are not very clearly aware of the details of the past of the Olympic. About the ancient Olympic, there existed two meth. One was regarded as the sacrifice for the God of universe - Zeus. The other meth was about a son of Zeus - Heracles. Heracles had incredible strength and he helped the Elis state accomplish the impossible mission. But the king of Elis refused to hand over 300 cattle as the reward. Heracles was so angry and then he expelled the king. To celebrate the victory, Heracles held a grand sports meeting in Olympia and this meeting was just the rudiment of the Olympic. In 776 BC, the ancient Greeks announced that they would hold a grand sports meeting in Olympia every four years for peace between the city-states around the whole Greece. Later, the sports meeting expanded and gradually became a grand meeting in which the athletes demonstrated the beauty of strength, speed, skills and national spirits. From 776 BC to 394 AD, almost 1170 years, the ancient Olympic was held 293 times. During this period, the Greece was peaceful and prosperous. However, the ancient Olympic was abolished by the ancient Roman emperor - Theodosius because of the war at last. Till then, the ancient Olympic was terminated thoroughly. Although the ancient Olympic games had rather little affect on the whole world compared to the modern Olympics, it set a perfect example on sports meeting. The ancient Olympics united the city-stats over the whole Greece and showed us the strong national spirits. To some degree, the Olympics helped the Greece keep united and prosperous. It also made us realize the strength, speed and skills of the ancient Greeks.The Olympic came back in 1896, almost 1500 years later. In the call of Coubertin who was regarded “the father of the modern Olympics”, the first modern Olympics were held in Greece - the birthplace of Olympics in 1896. Till now, the modern Olympic Games have been held 29 times. The last was held in Beijing in 2008 and the next will be held in the UK in July this year.Now, the Olympic Game is not just a grand meeting for sports, it has formed a system of culture and industry. It makes a big effect on the whole world. Many countries “fight” for the bid of the four years of Olympic Games and most of countries regard it as a great honor to hold it.The “Olympic culture” has become a common phenomenon among the world. The Olympic affects the nation where it was held a lot, ranged from the change of dairy life, the construction of cities to the behaviors of citizens. To some degree, the Olympics help push forward the development of city even the whole country.The Olympics show us the peace of world, the spirit of friendship and make us more united. The father of the modern Olympics - Coubertin once said The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle.
