Teaching design for Module 2 Unit 2 The Olympic GamesPeriod 1 Warming up and reading南宁一中 黄庆芬Analysis of teaching materialThe topics of this unit are ancient and modern Olympic Games and the Olympic spirit. Students will learn about the origin of the Olympics as well as the aim of the Games and the sports events that can usually be seen at the Games. Some famous Greek myths, legends and characters will be introduced to students, too. As the cradle of western civilization, Greek Mythology has a deep relationship with Greek history and the origin of the Olympic Games. Also, its of great help for students to learn about western cultures and the development of the English language. The purpose of the reading part is to let students know some general knowledge of the ancient and modern Olympics and to help them understand the Olympic spirit. While learning, they will become more concerned about the greatest sports games of human race. Students will be able to master some reading skills like skimming, scanning and summarizing through various reading activities. Besides, teachers should encourage students to pay more attention to the characteristics of having an interview and enable them to make an interview on their own.Analysis of studentsMy students are mostly from the countryside. They are lacking in the basic knowledge and the cultural background of the topic- the Olympic Games. As senior students, they have the ability to read. And the topic is interesting and will easily arouse the students learning emotion. As for the learning methods, they are poor in cooperative learning skills. Some students are not active in class and some students dont like English so much. Therefore, Ill have the students study in a relaxing atmosphere. Students will understand the new knowledge in certain degree through the mental process of seeing, hearing, reading, thinking, saying, etc. And they should make preparations for completing the new study task with the teachers help.Teaching methodsBased on the material and the students learning background, in this lesson, I mainly use “Communicative” Approach, “Question-and-answer activity teaching method“Pair work or individual work method” and “Task-based language teaching” to fulfill my teaching objectives. Task-based language teaching offers students an opportunity to complete the task in which the students use language to achieve a specific outcome. The activity reflects the real life and learners focus on meanings. They are free to use any language they want.Teaching objectivesAfter this lesson, students will be able to:a. know about some basic knowledge of the Olympic Games and the differences between ancient and modern Olympics as well as improve their reading skills like predicting, skimming and scanning by completing the reading tasks designed by the teacher;b. better understand “the Olympic spirit” through further thinking;c. learn some key words and expressions about sports events and the Olympic Games by intensive reading, such as ancient, modern, compete, host, admit, replace, mascots, swift, take part in, stand for, every four years, as well, in charge, one after another, etc.d. understand the structure and characteristics of an interview and know how to have an interview in their real life.Teaching Focus Help students not only improve their reading skills but also master the key words and expressions listed as above.Teaching difficult pointHow to help students understand the structure and characteristics of an interview and practice having their own interview.Teaching proceduresStep I Lead- inPlay a video clip titled “Olympic Games trough history” for the students and ask the question: Which city hosted more modern Olympic Games than the other city in the world?
