M: You Americans are funny. It seems as if you were married with cars.M: Yeah, I guess thats true. The country is becoming one big highway. I was reading that there are about 4 million miles of roads and highways in this country now.Q: What are they talking about?12. M: Im thinking of eating out tonight. Care for a bite?W: If you wont mind waiting while I grab my wallet.Q: What will the woman probably do?13. W: How did you do on the maths exam, John?M: I barely made it. It was just a passing score but better than I had expected.Q: What do we learn from the conversation?14. M: Do you ever know what Tony is talking about?W: Never, he always beats around the bush.Q: What does the woman mean?15. W: So I guess youll be transferring out on Tuesday. You know I am going to miss all your silly jokes while youre gone.M: Well, you know, if you really do, remember Im only a phone call away.Q: What does the man mean?16. W: Youll love this apartment. It has two bedrooms, a big kitchen, a balcony, air-conditioning and a wonderful view!M: What a pity! I have a sleeping problem and its too near the highway. Otherwise, I would like to take it.Q: What conclusion can you draw from the conversation? 17. M: I cant believe how much that student who was just in here looks like you. She could be your daughter, you know.W: People are always assuming that were related.Q: What does the woman mean?18. W: Is the rescue crew still looking for survivors of the plane crash?M: Yes, they have been searching the area for hours, but they havent found anybody else. Theyll keep searching until night falls.Q: What do we learn from the conversation? Now you will hear the two long conversations.Conversation OneW: What a great day, dont you think?M: I guess so. I hadnt noticed. I feel awful because I watched television until after midnight last night. W: After midnight! Did you watch so late because you were bored? I usually watch TV only if I have nothing better to do. M: Bored? No, I was upset because I left my meal tickets in the cafeteria. Thats more than fifty dollars worth of meal tickets down the drain. W: So, did watching TV make you feel better?M: Well, I felt a bit better while I was watching TV. You know, it can take my mind off my troubles. But after I turned the TV off, I just felt disgusted with myself for wasting so much time. W: Ive had that feeling before. M: I had intended to watch just one program, but somehow I couldnt make myself switch off the TV. W: Actually, Ive read that theres a scientific explanation for that. It seems that theres a part of the brain that processes complex information, but that part becomes less active while watching TV. M: Thats certainly how I felt last night like my brain wasnt very active. W: Thats not the worst of it. If you watch TV a lot, or for a long time, that part of the brain the part that processes complex information shows lowered activity and you become more and more passive. M: Thats incredible. W: Next time you feel upset, you should go swimming. Thats what I do, and it always makes me feel better. M: I suppose. Right now, Ive got to go to the cafeteria and get some more meal tickets.Questions 19 to 22 are based on the conversation you have just heard.19. When does the woman normally watch TV? 20. Why was the man upset?21. Why did the man feel disgusted with himself?22. According to the woman, what happens to the brain while watching TV?Conversation TwoW: Hi! Welcome to Rental Property Management. May I help you?M: I want to rent a two-bedroom apartment. W: Okay. My name is Anne Smith, the rental agent here. M: Hi, Im Bill Harrington. W: Mr. Harrington, so that we can match your needs better, I would like to ask you some questions before I show you what we have available. First, what price range are you interested in?M: Somewhere between $400 and $450 a month. W: Okay. Did you have a specific location in mind?M: Id like to live somewhere near the university. Or at least on a bus line. W: When would you like to move in?M: On 21st of the month. W: Okay. Are there any other facilities that you would like to have? For example, a dishwasher, a balcony, a swimming pool or central air conditioning?M: I would definitely like to have a dishwasher, and with summers like these, central air! A balcony is not that important. W: Okay. Here are photos of the apartments we have available which fit your preferences. M: Thank you. This one on Broadway Avenue looks nice. I would like to see that one. And the one on Main Street. W: Sure. Let me get the keys and we will go to look at them. If you choose to rent one of them, we will need a damage deposit of $250. You will be responsible for all the utilities. You can sign a lease today, if you like. M: Great! Thank you.Questions 23 to 25 are based on the conversation you have just heard.23. What is the specific location the man has in his mind? 24. What kind of facilities does the man want necessarily?25. What can be inferred about the man?Section BPassage OneTo extinguish different kinds of fires, several types of fire extinguishers have been invented. They must be ready for immediate use when fire breaks out. Most portable kinds operate for less than a minute, so they are useful only on small fires. The law requires ships, trains, buses and planes to carry extinguishers. Since fuel, oxygen and heat must be present in order for fire to exist, one or more of these things must be removed or reduced to extinguish a fire. If the heat is reduced by cooling the material below a certain temperature, the fire goes out. The cooling method is the most common way to put out a fire. Water is the best cooling material because it is low in cost and easy to get. Another method of extinguishing fire is by cutting off the oxygen. This is usually done by covering the fire with sand, steam or some other things. A blanket may be used to cover a small fire. A third method is called separation, which includes removing the fuel or material easy to burn from a fire, so that it can find no fuel. The method that is used to put out a fire depends upon the type of fire. Fires have been grouped in three classes. Fires in wood, paper, cloth and the like are called Class A fires. These materials usually help keep the fire on. Such fires can be stopped most readily by cooling with water.Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you have just heard.26. Which method is often used if we cover a small piece of burning wood with a basin in order to stop the fire? 27. What should we first be clear about in choosing how to put out a fire?28. What would the speaker probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?Passage TwoI suddenly heard an elephant crying as though frightened. Looking down, I immediately recognized that something was wrong, and ran down to the edge of the near bank. There I saw Ma Shwe with her three-month-old calf struggling in the fast-rising water, and it was a life-and-death struggle. Her calf was floating and screaming with fear. Ma Shwe was as near to the far bank as she could get, holding her whole body against the rushing water, and keeping the calf pressed against her huge body. Every now and then the rushing water would sweep the calf away. There was a sudden rise in the water and the calf was washed clean over the mothers body and was gone. Ma Shwe turned quickly to reach it and pressed the calf with her head and trunk against the rocky bank. Then with a huge effort, she picked it up in her trunk and tried until she was able to place it on a narrow shelf of rock.Just at this moment, she fell back into the river. If she were carried down, it would be certain death. I knew, as well as she did, that there was one spot where she could get up the bank, but it was on the other side from where she had put her calf. While I was wondering what I could do next, I heard the sound of a mothers love. Ma Shwe had crossed the river and got up the bank and was making her way back as fast as she could, roaring all the time, but to her calf it was music.Questions 29 to 32 are based on the passage you have just heard. 29. What did the speaker see the moment he got down to the river bank?30. How did Ma Shwe manage to save her calf from the fast-flowing water?31. How did the calf feel about the mother elephants roaring?32. What can be the best title for the passage?Passage ThreeKaren, grown up in a very traditional family in the western United States, maintained high moral standards throughout her youth. In 1984, at the age of 23, she married Bill. They were blessed with two children, a boy and a girl. By 1991 their love had deepened, and they were happy. Later that year, Bill developed a white spot on his tongue. He visited a doctor. One day shortly after that, Bill called Karen to sit beside him. He said with tears in his eyes that he loved her and wanted to live forever with her. The doctor suspected that he had been infected with HIV, the virus that leads to AIDS. The family was tested. Bill and Karens results were positive. Bill had become infected before he met Karen; then he passed the virus on to Karen. The childrens results were negative. Within three years, Bill was dead. “I dont know how to express what it is like to watch the once handsome man you love and intend to live with forever dying slowly. I cried many nights. He died three months short of ten years of our marriage,” says Karen. Though a doctor told Karen that she would soon follow her husband into death, she is still alive. The infection has progressed to the early stages of AIDS. Since the beginning of the spread of AIDS in 1981, about 117 million people have died of it. It is roughly calculated that in 1997 alone, about 23 million people died of it. Nevertheless, there are fresh reasons for optimism in the battle against AIDS. During the past few years, there has been a drop in new AIDS cases in wealthy nations. In addition, promising drugs hold out hope of better health and longer life. Questions 33 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.33. What does the speaker intend to do by telling the story of Karen?34. When was Bill suspected of being infected with HIV?35. What can be concluded from the passage? Section CAll over the country these days, electronic mail messages are (36) concluded with this odd little punctuation sequence:(or one of its many variants:). These are smileys, so called because when you (37) tilt your head to the left they look like little
