common in spoken english. we dont normally put them in a composition or a letter. sometimes it is helpful if you know what common proverbs mean. here are a few examples.1)“once bitten, twice shy.” if a dog bites me, i shall be twice as careful in future when i see it. this proverb is also used to apply to many things and not only to dogs. if you have been cheated at a shop, you will not go to the same shop again.2) “a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.” if i am a hunter, trying to catch birds, it is better to catch one than to see two birds in a bush but not able to catch them. thus this means that what you have already got is better than the chance of being able to get something bigger in future.3) “too many cooks spoil the broth (soup)”. when too many people do something, they get in each others way and do a bad job.4) “to pour oil on troubled waters” is to try to calm things down. oil is lighter than water. if a ship is in trouble at sea, another ship may come to help it. the second ship can send small boats to rescue people. however, it may first pour oil on the sea to make the sea less rough.5) “dont be a dog in a manger(槽)”means“ dont be selfish.” in a stable (马房), the manger is the place where the horses food is put. sometimes a dog will sleep in the manger and bark when a horse comes to get its food. the dog does not want to eat the hay in the manger but it will not let the horse eat it.6) “he is sitting on the fence” means that somebody will not say whether he is in favor of a plan or against it. he is sitting on a fence between two opposing sides, perhaps waiting to see which side will win.7) “he who pays the piper calls the tune.” a piper is a musician. the man who employs or pays a musician can say what tunes the musician will play. thus this means that if a man provides the money for a plan, he can say how it will be carried out.8) “you cant get blood out of a stone” means that you cannot get something from a person who has not got any of the things you want. e. g. you cannot get a million dollars from a poor man. 25. peter has a bicycle which is much too small for him but he does not want to let his younger brother ride on it. his mother is angry and says to him: _. a. you cant get blood out of a stone b. dont be a dog in a manger c. once bitten, twice shy. d. to pour oil on troubled waters26. mr. wang paid for a new school. some people didnt like the design of the school but they didnt argue with mr. wang because _. a. he was sitting on the fence b. once bitten, twice shyc. he who pays the piper calls the tune d. a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush27. mrs. lin wanted to buy a new dress. her husband suggested that she buy it from a shop near their home. mrs. lin disagreed because she had been cheated by that shop. so she said: “i wont go there again because _.”a. a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush b. i am sitting on the fencec. once bitten, twice shy d. too many cooks spoil the broth28. mr. brown had quite a good job in hong kong but he thought that if he went to singapore, he might get a much better job with more money and a larger house. his wife didnt want him to leave his job in hong kong and she reminded him that _. a. a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush b. too many cooks spoil the broth c. you cannot get blood out of a stone d. he who pays the piper calls the tune c on a clear night, the sky is a wonderful thing. is there life out there somewhere? is there another place like earth where life might exist? if so, where is it? and how far away is it? recently, the american kepler spacecraft found 22b, a planet about six hundred light years away. it is the first planet in a “habitable zone” outside the solar system. that means the planet orbits a star like our sun, but it is not too close to it, nor too far away. because of this position, scientists say kepler22b might have water, one of the main things needed for life. the newly-discovered planet is about two and a half times larger than the earth. it is closer to its star than we are to the sun, but 22bs sun is smaller than ours, and doesnt produce as much heat. scientific instruments show the new planet could be made of gases, rocks or some kinds of liquids. the kepler spacecraft was named in honor of johannes kepler, the seventeenth century german astronomer. it was designed to examine a small part of the milky way galaxy and search for places like the earth. it was made to inspect over 150,000 stars and measure how bright they are. if a planet passes between kepler and the star, it blocks out part of the light. that is what suggested to scientists that there is at least one planet orbiting the star. the instruments on kepler show the new planet as a small, black dot moving across its sun. an important part of the kepler experiment is on the earth. after the spacecraft gathers information, scientists use the space telescopes on the ground. scientists have found over 2,300 new planets since kepler was launched. about 200 of these are about the size of the earth. most are much larger, but it is the new planets length from its star that is important. for life to possibly exist there, the planets temperature must not be too hot or too cold.29. what can we learn about kepler-22b? a. water must have existed on it.b. it takes humans about 600 years to get there.c. it is made of gases, rocks and many kinds of liquids.d. it is the first planet outside the solar system where life may survive.30. the kepler spacecraft was sent into space to _.a. show honor us_.a. how the kepler system worksb. if the kepler system sees a new planetc. how the kepler system uses the space telescopesd. why an important part of the kepler system remains on the earth32. what can we infer from the passage?a. life may exist on the new planet in another form.b. it is colder on the new planet because its sun is smaller.c. life cant exist on planets which are much larger than the earth.d. the new planets length from its star decides on the possibility of life existence.dwhen i was about twelve, i headed to a restaurant for dinner with my family. it was winter, and on that
