So we hope world will become one family by work camps. Fields of Work:JIA work camps focus on villages in China that have been affected by Hansen s disease (HD). In partnership with the residents of the villages, campers work to improve the villagers overall living and spiritual conditions.In 2007, we began setting work camps in a School.In 2008, we will set more work camps in other fields, such as environmental issues, the handicapped, cultural heritages, education and so on.In 2009, Medical activities start with Medical team1.2. IntroductionWe welcome you to join our work camps, sharing unforgettable time and creating fresh new age together! All campsites have nice nature, multiple culture, various minorities and tasty local snacks, so you will enjoy peaceful life and encounter the simple villagers of China. Maybe it will be a rare chance for you to know this mysterious country with long history.The common points of all work camps are such as follows:a) Age limit : From 18 (No maximum) but in some projects, kids with their parents can be accepted, if teenagers want to join the work camps, please contact us first.b) Language : English, Chinese (Mandarin is necessary in many cases, please check the info sheet in details)c) Insurance : We provide small insurance only for accidents during work camps in China. d) Accommodations: It depends on the projects (big tents, classrooms, community center etc.) most of places are sleep with sleeping bags and mattress Sometimes there is no electricity and not enough water to drink; Hard to take shower but we will try our best to meet your demands (even a bucket a day. please check in details of the info sheet) How to apply: How to apply and join the projects!? All workcamps in China, we will pick volunteers up from the airport, railway station or long- distance bus station. So, we advise volunteers to arrive / leave China at least a few days before/ after the projects also because volunteers should not expect so much sightseeing during the projects.(if you want to do it, please do it before/ after the workcamps!)And it is quite possible to stay in the Youth Hostel, guest house, travelers hotel etc.(4-10 US$ per night) together with volunteers in the same workcamps before/ after the workcamps and we Chinese are very hospitable to foreigners; you can get a chance to do the home-stay! The villagers are unable to leave the village (for financial, societal, and education reasons) and have to face the fact that the village has low productivity, a large population, a paucity of land, and no medical security. Presently, there are 41 children are enrolled in school, but the school urgently lacks teachers and even more urgently lacks funds. The teachers are also very limited in their education. From the village to ZuTangZi is 5km, which can be a hard journey on rainy days. There are 26 total villagers: 16 males and 10 females. Of the 18 recovered leprosy patients, 13 are male and 5 are female. There are also two 3 year old boys, but the majority of recovered patients in this village do not have children. The village lacks manpower, as there are only 5 young people. There are many empty houses, but due to years of neglect, some have collapsed, and others are deemed very dangerous. The average age is over 65, most of the villagers are elderly people. Since Huang CaoBa hosted its first JIA work camp in 2007, JIA volunteers have built a bathroom, done simple living maintenance, built and repaired roads, gathered firewood, and constructed a pavilion over the water source to protect the villagers from rain and wind. Yu er recovered leprosy village was built at the beginning of the 1950s, and there are currently 15 recovered leprosy patients living in the village, along with about 40 of their children and grandchildren. There are five people living alone, about 14 elderly people, and four children in school. The average age of the recovered leprosy patients is about 60 years old.The first JIA work camp was held in Yu er village in the summer of 2007, the main project was road repair. The second work camp was help in August 2008, and focused on roof repair and improving the overall conditions of villagers homes. Situated near mountains and rivers, the villages scenery is plenty beautiful. The village was built in 1974 and has a total of 35 people of which there are 15 recoverers. Currently, there are also 4 students (1 in high school, and 3 in elementary school). In August of 2006, BaJiaoChong hosted its first JIA work camp. The volunteers helped the villagers repaired roads, built water storage facilities, and did simple personal maintenance for the recoverers. Later, volunteers from the nearby WenShan ShiZhuan University took over organizing the volunteer activities. In October of 2008, volunteers came to the village once again to help with farm work and to tutor the children. Currently, there are 30 people living in the village, 95% of whom are recovered leprosy patients, many with relatively severe disabilities. Huoshan village was the first place in Yunnan to host a JIA work camp. In August 2004, 38 volunteers from China, Korea, Japan, and the US organized the first work camp. The main project was constructing a communal water supply line to reduce the water shortages in the village. The second Huoshan work camp was held in Aughust 2005 and focused on constructing a shower house with a solar water heater and a water storage tank. In May 2006, 23 volunteers organized amini campand provided basic medical assistance to villagers, carried out a survey of village living conditions, and prepared for the construction of a public square to dry crops. August 2006 saw the third official JIA work camp, where volunteers helped villagers construct a crop-drying square and assisted with basic medical care; in May 2007, the fourth JIA work camp focused on helping villagers with agricultural work; in October of the same year volunteers returned to Huoshan village to repair roofs, clean out water pipes, and assist with daily living activities.
