This essay analyses its value from the respects of the words he chooses, the arrangement of sentence, the rhetorical devices and his emotions it reflects. Gettysburg war broke in 1863 plays a very important role in American civil war even in American history, because it was the key step which made American civil war transfer from failure to success. This war was also the cruelest war in American civil war, in which there were about 51000 people died. It was a real catastrophe for America whose population was only several millions at that time. At this background Lincoln delivered the famous Gettysburg Address. On first sight it may be so short, for which has no more than 600words, it is also said that Lincoln gave this speech only in less than three minutes. But after finishing it you can find it is very impressive and powerful. The content and the style of this speech work together very perfectly, no matter the words chosen, the arrangement of sentence, the rhetorical devices or emotions it reflects can compatible with its high fame. The purpose of this speech is to show respect and sad feelings to the people dead in the war, so the tone of this speech must be gloomy ,but Lincoln also took this chance to inspire the listeners to fight bravely in order to pursue democracy and freedom. As a public speech, it was not impromptu, Lincoln polished the manuscript several times before delivering, so every word of this speech was very precious and cannot be deleted. This time Lincolns listeners were American people who had survived a cruel war, the family members, friends or beloved ones may be dead in that war, so that they must be in a very heavy mood to attend this speech. Lincoln knew that, he also knew that listeners must be guided to fight; they needed some reasons to continue fighting. He gave this speech not only to mourn for the dead ones but also inspired people to fight till end. His speech was very persuasive , first he spoke from the point of history that he spoke highly of a noble dream-freedom and equality ,which was very important on that occasion because it lifted the speech to a high spiritual level. Second, he associated the death of those soldiers with the pursuit of freedom and democracy of human kind, which indicated that the deceased were noble and valuable; they made contributions in the process of human society advancement. Last he put forward that created and sustained “the government of the people by the people and for the people”, which appealed to the listeners. Authentic emotion is another reason why the audience can be totally affected. In his speech he emphasized on all the people were created equal in America, which really appealed to emotions of the listeners. At the same time he put himself on the same level of his listeners, as a result that they felt nearer to him. He and listeners could communicate with each other easily. He didnt only yell out palely ,but he added deep emotions to this noble pursuit. That is why it is so touching. Many rhetorical devices are also used in the speech, all of which contribute to the expression of the speech .First, parallelism in the speech, for example “we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate, and we can not hallow this ground” which made his words forceful, symmetric, rhyme and balance in structure; Second, contrast was used, for example “the world will little note what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here”, which can achieve emphasis and aesthetic result. Except for the rhetorical devices he used in it, there were variations of sentences, a sharp variation of sentence length reflected the emotional state of mind of Lincoln and his efforts to evoke an active response from the audience. As a political speech ,in some sense Lincoln wanted to enlist support from his audience, that is continue fighting for a better country where people can enjoy equality, freedom and democracy. This speech varied in expressions, flexible in sentences and deep in emotion, so that it was full of poetic beauty. Although on the point of celebrating victory of his army, we can not feel his desire to start a war, he wanted to lead American People to seek for democracy and freedom instead.
