The latter consists of in-class performance and attendance to the class. IV. Listening TipsDoes this situation seem familiar to you? Your English is progressing well, the grammar is now familiar, the reading comprehension is no problem, but listening is still a problem! First of all you should know that listening comprehension is probably the most difficult task for almost all learners of English as a foreign language. The most important thing is to listen, and that means as often as possible. Listening often is the most important way to improve your listening skills. You should listen on a regular basis. Listening needs a great amount of practice and patience. Try your best to listen as much as possible because, as is known, practice makes perfect. Listen to VOA or BBC every day. Watch English movies and television programs. Read English books. Enlarge your vocabulary. Here is some of the advice: 1). Accept the fact that you are not going to understand everything. 2). Keep cool (idiom=stay relaxed) when you do not understand - even if you continue to not understand for a long time. 3). Do not translate into your native language (synonym=mother tongue). Your brain is free to concentrate on the most important thing: Understanding English in English.4). Listen for the gist (noun=general idea) of the conversation. Dont concentrate on detail until you have understood the main ideas. 5). Listen for keywords. Use keywords (noun=principal words) or key phrases to help you understand the general ideas. If you understand New York, business trip, last year you can assume (verb=to take for granted, suppose) that the person is speaking about a business trip to New York last year. This may seem obvious to you, but remember that understanding the main idea will help you to understand the detail as the person continues to speak.6). Listen for context. Lets imagine that your English speaking friend says .I bought this great tuner at JRs. It was really cheap and now I can finally listen to National Public Radio broadcasts. You dont understand what a tuner is. If you focus on the word tuner you might become frustrated. However, if you think in context (noun=the situation explained during the conversation) you probably will understand. For example; bought is the past of buy, listen is no problem and radio is obvious. Now you understand: He bought something - the tuner- to listen to the radio. A tuner must be a kind of radio! This is a simple example but it demonstrates what you need to focus on: Not the word that you dont understand, but the words you do understand.Lesson One Preparation for this course Self-introduction: name, phone number and email address. The score for this course includes examination score and daily performance. In order to obtain a licence to drive a taxi in London, candidates have to pass a detailed examination. This is called The Knowledge by London cab drivers and it can take years of study and practice to get The Knowledge. Candidates are examined not only on the quickest routes but also on the quickest routes at different times of the day. People who want to pass the examination spend much of their free time driving or even cycling around London, studying maps and learning the huge street directory by heart. The UndergroundTravelling on the London underground (the tube) presents few difficulties for visitors because of the clear colour-coded maps. It is always useful to have plenty of spare change with you because there are often long queues at the larger stations. If you have enough change you can buy your ticket from a machine. You will find signs which list the stations in alphabetical order, with the correct fares, near the machines. There are automatic barriers which are operated by the tickets.
