BOOK 3 module 1 Europe Period 5Cultural Corner & Reading (on page 2 of Supplementary Reading)Good afternoon everyone, (good afternoon teacher) okay, in Module 1 we have learned enough information about some European cities and we read a passage; we did listening practice right? Okay, next one, we see that on the picture, thats a flag. Question: which country, city or organization does this flag stand for? Okay, that is a European Union, you are right, okay, very good, and what does the design on the flag indicate? Any special meaning? You see the color is blue, and some stars make a circle in the middle of the flag. So any special meaning do you think? There should be, maybe? Okay, now, lets have a discussion in a group of four, and just one or two minutes; the possible meanings (discussion time, then state the possible meanings to the students) okay, actually, just a open question, there is no definite answer; so all your reasonable answers can be taken as correct. And today we are going to read a passage, which is about European Union, and on page 7; so please take out your book and turn to page 7; well before reading, I need to give you three more questions to have a discussion; I need you to make a prediction, the three questions are from the passage, so, of course, you can find out the answers to those questions in the passage. But before reading, I need you to make a prediction, you just try to figure out the possible answers according to whatever you have already known about the European Union; are you with me? So question one: Whats the European Union? Maybe that is a definition, right? And question two: how did it start? In which year, maybe and who came up with idea; and the last question: how many countries belong to it now? okay? I need you to work in pairs; and two or three minutes to figure out the possible answers; now, here we go, you are not supposed to read the passage, just make a prediction; without reading the passage; can not read the passage and tell me the answer, okay? Yes, just guess, okay, lets stop here. So number one, can you figure out the definition of the European Union? Maybe, it is an organization. Do you finish that? Just an organization? You need more information I think. Okay, sit down, please. You please, okay, very good! Its an organization of European countries probably, and how did it start? In which year and who came up with the idea, could you please have a try? Maybe, in 1950s. okay, maybe (predict the answer), how about the last bably, you are right.Well, now, this time, I need you to read the passage, and of course, very easily, you can figure out, I mean, the exact answer, right? Well, first of all, could you please read the first paragraph? And find out the answer to the first question: can you figure out the definition of the European Union?, I mean the definition. Okay, lets stop here, so please tell me, the exact answer to the first question. Could you please tell me all together? Very good, so could you tell me: which sentence tells you the answer? The first sentence of the first paragraph; And do you know the first sentence is usually called? We prefer to call it the topic sentence. Okay, topic sentence; now lets have a look, topic sentence (此处加入介绍 reading strategy: topic sentence usually tells us the main idea of the paragraph. The other sentences in the paragraph are called supporting points. Which tell us details.) usually tells us the main idea and the rest of the sentences provide supporting points; and which can tell us details. So if you want to read a passage in a quick way; I mean, maybe, you just want to get the main idea very quickly, you just need to have a quick look at the topic sentences; I mean, the first sentences of the paragraph; so that is the reading strategy; strategy means a kind of way, which can help you to learn something in a better way, maybe, just a skill maybe. So are you with me about the reading strategy? So pay much attention to the topic sentence when you read something; Okay, now, you are going to read the rest of the passage and find out the answers to the other two questions quickly by means of reading the topic sentences; so you can do it in a quick way; (after a while) okay, so question two, how did it start? Sophia, please? Okay, good, thank you, and the last question? How many member countries are there? Anybody? Tell me together? There are? 25. And in which year? 2004? Actually, so far, about the year of 2007, the number of the European countries has been increased to 27; so maybe, you need to change the number; so there are 27 countries for European Union, okay, well, so much for this passage. And according to this passage, we have known, European Union is an organization of the European countries, right? Can you tell me: what is the capital city for the European Union? Just like a country, yes or no? Yes, do you know which city is the capital of the European Union? Brussels, good, do you know: where is the Brussels? Brussels is the capital of Belgium. Okay, very good. And, now, we are going to read a passage about Brussels. So please, take out your supplementary book, just your activity sheet, I give you just now. The capital of Europe, this one? Well before reading, I want to give you a topic to have a discussion. You know, each country has its own capital, and even the European Union has a capital too. So I think there should be something in common when people choose a city as a capital. So here, I need you to have a discussion to talk about the features a capital should have. And here are some hints, which can help you, ah, maybe they can give you some better ideas, for instance, as for me, I think Beijing is a capital of China, right? That is very good, maybe thats because, the climate of Beijing is very pleasant, and so thats why I choose Beijing as one capital. Is that clear? Now, can you figure out any other features a capital should have? Work in group, and I will give you four minutes. Now lets do it. Okay, stop here, everyone, times up. Now lets collect some possible ideas from your group discussion so what features do you think a capital should have? What about this group? Maybe, you, please. It should have long history, good ,very good, convenient transportations okay, very good, they should enjoy the high status in peoples mind, in peoples heart. Okay, very good, and what about this group? Anybody can be a reporter? Okay, you please. It should be a center of many things, for exampleyou cover allokay, very good, partly I agree with you. and the last one, the boy, okay, we have to take environment into consideration, that is very important nowadays. People care a lot about the environment; okay, very good, you have all did a very good job.And next part we are going to read the passage that is about the Brussels, we are going to find out any features Brussels has. So just read the first three paragraphs, and figure out any features about Brussels. Okay, while youre reading, you d better underline all the features Brussels has at the same time, and check in pairs; okay, lets stop here, tell me, what features have you got about the capital of European Union, Brussels? Anybody? Okay, could you please tell us? Okay, thats one point; good, and next one? There are some/ and what else? .yes, you, please. yes, you are right. very good. Okay, you can see the answer from me, I have got these words, oh, yes, you miss one point.that should be .okay, another question./.now, listen, could you please tell me: whether you have got all the information here only by reading topic sentences? Yes or no? no, you need to read the other sentences; because they can tell us, the details, very good. Here, I want to give you some pictures that are taken in Brussels, maybe we can have a better understanding about the city. You see that, this building is very modern; that is EU parliament; you know the word, parliament? And here you can see the architectures, so many beautiful buildings with different styles, and can you guess what people are doing here? Pardon? . (explain the picture one by one)Okay, next you are going to read the fourth paragraph and tell me: what are people arguing about? Okay, tell me what happened.
