One is of Martin Luther King and the other is of the World Trader Center. And then ask students the following questions:1. Do you know this man? Who is him?2. Do you know this famous building? And what happened to it?Help students to talk as much as possible and then tell them some information about Martin Luther King and World Trader Center. Here is some information:Dr. martin Luther King was a famous African-American champion of civil rights who was born in 1929 and assassinated in 1968. He is known for promoting nonviolence in support of his cause, even though many of his opponents used violence against his supporters. He was inspired by the Indian leader Mahatma Gandhis protests against the British, and even traveled to India to learn more about non-violence. Martin Luther Kings birthday is now a national holiday in the US, and it is celebrated on the third Monday of January each year.The World Trade Center which was in New York, America was once the highest building in the world but it was taken down by the terrorists in 2001.Step 2: reading1. Reading strategy ( skimming ) and the first readingReading the title and the first sentences (Work on 2a)T: One of the reading skills is to read the title of the passage this helps you understand the text. It is also a good idea to read the first sentence of each paragraph before you read the whole text. Next, skim the passage and find the answers to the two questions.1). What are the two events in the passage?2). When did they happen?While students are reading, the teacher can move around the classroom and direct students to find the answer. After reading, the teacher asks some students to answer the questions.Answers:1).Dr. Martin Luther King was killed; The World Trade Center in New York was taken down by terrorists.2).The first event happened on April 4,1968. The second happened on September 11, 2001.2. The second reading (Work on 2b)T: Boys and girls, you did a good job. Now please read the passage very quickly and finish 2c. Read the statements and decide if they are true, false, or the information is not given.This step is to give students practice in reading for specific information. After reading, the teacher asks students to check the answers and correct the false statements.Answer:1.F 2.F 3.T 4.F 5.TThe true version of the false statements:1). Not everyone in America remember who killed Dr. King.2). Robert Allen was eating dinner when Dr. King was killed.4). Kate Smith was working in her office when a plane hit the World Trade Center.3 .The third reading (Find the following phrases)T: Ok, after reading for two times, we have known the main idea of the passage. Now its time to do some work on the words. Please take out your mark pens and find out the phrases on the screen. I believe all of you can do it well. Do you think so? Very good. Please start now!The teacher gives important phrases in Chinese and asks students to find the English version in the passage. The fourth reading (Work on 2d)T: My dear students, you are so good at finding the phrases Now, lets read the fourth time and try to finish 2d. Underline sentences from the passage with similar meanings to the sentences in 2d. This step is to check students comprehension of sentences in the reading passage. While reading, the teacher can encourage students to mark any words in the passage they do not know the meaning of. Students can then work with a partner for around five to ten minutes to discuss the words and see if they can infer the meaning of the words using the contextual clues.
