Dining Etiquette Prepared by George Topic guide How much do you know? What is dining etiquette? Is it important while eating? Should weabide by the rules? Dining etiquette is about what? How to improve your dining etiquette? : l3 r+ o7 |$ Q6 Z( i! q About diningetiquette Dining etiquette addresses a wide varietyof issues which can come up at the table. One is personal hygiene, an issue ina setting where people are eating because people could potentially passdiseases on to each other. Another is accepted rules of behavior when it comesto things like conversation, greeting people at the table, interacting withservers, and conversing with other diners. Other rules cover how and when touse utensils and tools, from finger bowls to forks. The setting of a meal can have an impact onthe dining etiquette which is appropriate. Meals at home tend to be morecasual, for example, while meals in restaurants are more formal. When peopleare entertaining as opposed to eating with family and close friends, the rulesof etiquette also change. Likewise, there are etiquette rules for dinnerguests, whether they are visiting a friend for dinner or attending an eventhosted by a head of state. Observing the rules of etiquettedemonstrates that someone is respectful of other people, and, when traveling, that someone respects a foreign culture. Many people find the way smoothed whenthey follow even basic etiquette rules, as people are more inclined to behelpful when they feel respected.( g( A8 w b, Xp. Unless there is an imminent threat of the theft of your meal take yourtime and enjoy it, you are not just filling up a hole. Overly bulging hamstercheeks are not attractive. Finish your mouthful before taking a drink. Never spit food out. If you always eat off of your lap in front of the TV when at home try tomake an effort to eat at the table once in a while. Break your bread into small pieces with your fingers and butter it onepiece at a time, your butter knife will normally be on your side plate(remember this is on your left) or next to it. The only time you should buttera piece of bread without breaking it is your toast at breakfast as it willnormally have been cut in half for you. Do not scrape your plate with your cutlery. Never scoop food up with your fork the tines should always pointdownwards. Move your soup spoon from 6 oclock to 12 oclock when spooning up soup, when only a little is remaining, tilt the bowl away from you to enable you tofinish it. Ask “May I get down please”
