Name some typical virtues honored in Chinese culture. 2. Todays unit is called “The importance of being honest.” What do you think this unit is about? Step 2 Understanding (10 mins) Real World Listening Focus “Washington and the Cherry Tree” is a well-known legend in the United States. The story advocates the importance of being honest. Here is a new version of Washington and the cherry tree. Look at the pictures. Did little George tell a lie? Franklins place in literature owes much to his autobiography. Perhaps the best-known portion of his autobiography is where he speaks of the thirteen virtues and how he translates them into daily practices. Culture Notes Benjamin Franklins Thirteen Virtues Benjamin Franklin (1706 -1790) was an inventor, scientist, a printer, political statesman, diplomat, an exemplary self-made man, a revolutionary hero, and of course, a writer. His achievements in all these roles were remarkable and may even be considered revolutionary. 1.Temperance. Eat not to dullness. Drink not to elevation. 2.Silence. Speak not but that may benefit others or yourself. Avoid trifling conversation. 3.Order. Let all your things have their places. Let each part of your business have its time. 4.Resolution. Resolve to perform what you ought. Perform without fail what you resolve. 5.Frugality. Make no expense but to do good to others or yourself. i.e. Waste nothing. 6.Industry. Lose no time. Think innocently and justly and, if you speak, speak accordingly. 8.Justice. Wrong none, by doing injuries or omitting the benefits that are you duty. 9.Moderation. Avoid extremes. Forbear resenting injuries so much as you think as they deserve. 10.Cleanliness. Tolerate no uncleanness in body, clothes or habitation. 11.Tranquility.
