Reading comprehensionThe following passages have been chosen from the textbook and followed by questions or unfinished Statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice on the basis of what is stated or implied in the passage.1There are many customs and superstitions associated with weddings. Many originated many centuries ago. Some are known throughout the country and many other parts of the world. Others may be regional or even maintained within families from generation to generation. They are maintained in the belief that they will bring good luck and happiness to the couple at a time when their lives are changing hopefully for the better.CHOOSING THE DAYAlthough most weddings now take place on Saturdays, it was considered unlucky in the past. Fridays were also considered unlucky, particularly Friday the 13th. The famous old rhyme advises a wedding in the first half of the week: Monday for wealth/Tuesday for health/Wednesday the best day of all/Thursday for losses/Friday for crosses/ Saturday for no luck at all. June was considered to be a lucky month to marry in because it is named after Juno, the Roman goddess of love and marriage. The summer as a whole was considered a good time to marry and this is partly to do with the suns association with fertility.THE WEDDING DRESSIt is thought unlucky for the bride to make her own wedding dress. It is also unlucky for the groom to see the bride in her wedding dress before she arrives at the ceremony. The bride should not wear her entire outfit before the wedding day. Some brides leave a final stitch on the dress undone until it is time to leave for the ceremony when the outfit is completed. Most brides today marry in white which symbolizes maidenhood. The tradition was given a boost by Queen Victoria who chose to marry in white instead of silver which was the traditional color of Royal brides. A green dress is thought to be unlucky unless the bride is Irish. The old expression that a woman has a green gown was used to imply promiscuity, the green staining being due to rolling in grassy fields.THE VEILTraditionally, brides have been thought to be particularly vulnerable to evil spirits. It was thought that the veil would disguise the bride and therefore outwit evil spirits. The veil became popular in Britain in the eighteen hundreds. In this country it is associated with modesty and chastity.FLOWERSFlowers have always been used for decoration at weddings. Some people choose the flowers at the wedding on the basis of their symbolic meanings. For example, orange blossom has always been associated with weddings because it signifies purity and chastity. A combination of red and white flowers is avoided by the superstitious because they stand for blood and bandages.THE WEDDING CAKECutting the wedding cake is now part of the celebrations at the reception. The couple make the first cut together to symbolize their shared future. One old English custom was to place a ring in the wedding cake. The guest who found the ring in his or her piece of cake would be ensured happiness for the next year. It is said that unmarried guests who place a piece of wedding cake under their pillow before sleeping will increase their prospects of finding a partner and bridesmaids who do likewise will dream of their future husbands. The top tier of the cake is often kept by the couple for the christening of their first child.31. Which of the following statements about the main idea of the passage is TRUE?A. Which came first, the plants or the insects, in particular the bees? If the plants came first, they would have had to be plants that could survive without pollination. If, however, they had no need for bees, there was no need for bees to evolve. Further, if plants were able to survive without bees, there was no need for plants to have a particular color or smell to attract bees, there being no bees to attract.A bee cannot exist by itself. It needs to be part of a unit, sixty thousand strong. Did one bee originally evolve on his own? Evolution believes that before the bees there were bee-like creatures going through various changes, evolving into what finally and suddenly became a fully developed nest with workers, drones and one queen. If this is so, the question that puzzles anti-evolutionists is how the stages took place and how the creatures survived meanwhile, and was there a stage at which the creatures were half bees and half something else. But the question here With regard to bees is the question of food. If the bees came first, what did they feed on? Perhaps on some other life form or, cannibalistically, on one another. There seems to be no record of this but, in this age, there has been a great deal of which there was no previous record, that has suddenly come to light. If bees come before the plants, it is clear that they managed to survive until the appearance of plants, and that whatever their first or original food, they eventually transferred their needs to plants. Equally, if the plants came first they must have had some way of survival that did not require the help of bees. If the evolutionists are right, it may also be that the plants underwent changes and that part of their evolution is concerned with passing from a form that could do without bees to a form that needed them.Anti-evolutionists will argue that neither needed to come first, that the two could have come into existence side-by-side and interdependently at the same time. But how, your evolutionist will say, could bees just have come into existence? There must have been some bee-like insect there before. And if this is so, what did it feed on? At which point we are back to the beginning again with the age-old question: Which came first, the plants or the insects, the chicken or the egg?36. This passage mainly tells us about( ).A. plant evolution B. insect evolution C. the ideas of the anti-evolutionists D. the theory of evolution37. From the passage we can learn that( ).A. bees cant exist unless there is a unit of sixty thousand strong.B. bees can survive by eating their companionsC. bees can only live on some kinds of plantsD. bees can mostly live on a bee keeper38. According to the passage the anti-evolutionists are those who( ).A. are supporters of evolution B. insist on the egg coming before chickenC. are against the theory on evolution D. doubt all the living things40. Which of the following CANNOT be derived from the passage ?A. Without the bees pollination the plants cant live on.B. In a fully developed nest there must be some queens, together with some other drones and workers.C. The question which came first, the chicken or the egg still remains unknown.3In the spring of 1974, Chinese archaeologists made a great find in Xian, Shanxi Province, when they unearthed the pottery statues of imperial guards buried in the Tomb of the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty dating back over 2000 years.
