An unbelievable thingB The average American child spends three to five hours a day watching TV. In 1961, the average child began to watch television at age three; however, today it is nine months. Yet, most parents think that television has a bad influence on their children. For example, in the early 1970s, my parents believed that my bad eyesight was the result of sitting too close to the screen, and they therefore made my stay at least six feet from it. Today, most people have no such worry, but many new ridiculous (荒谬的) sayings have appeared: *TV makes kids stupid. Many children watch more educational programs when they are pre-schoolers. When they grow up, they can read more books and have much better ideas to solve difficult problems than other children. *TV makes kids violent. The real story is not so simple. Hundreds of studies show that watching violence on TV makes children more aggressive (好斗的). But a study of over 5,000 children also finds that some positive programs make children kinder. The problem is that kids are increasingly watching shows with violence instead of those suitable for their age. *Sitting around watching TV makes kids overweight. An experiment finds that when children watch less television, they do lose extra weight; however, reducing their television time does not make them more active. The real problem lies in snacking (吃零食), a widespread habit for kids, and junk-food advertisements. *TV helps kids get to sleep. The opposite is true. The more television children watch, the more likely they are to have irregular sleep and nap(小睡) patterns. Allowing kids to watch television is part of the problem, not the solution. 55. Which one is the advantage of educational TV programs? A. They will improve childrens ability to get along with others. B. They will make children solve difficult problems better than others. C. They are likely to make children more aggressive. D. They will make sure of childrens success in the future. 56. Why are children spending much time watching TV likely to be fat? A. Watching TV makes children lazy and inactive. B. Watching TV doesnt burn up as much fat as doing sports. C. Children are attracted by the food advertisement on TV. D. Children like to snack while watching TV.57. What influence does watching TV have on a childs sleep? A. It will make children form a bad habit of sleeping. B. Children are likely to sleep deeper after watching TV.C. Childrens sleep time will be greatly reduced. D. It will make children sleep easier. 58. What is the purpose of this text? A. To increase peoples knowledge of watching TV.B. To correct parents wrong ideas of televisions effect on children. C. To warn parents of the disadvantages of watching TV. D. To explain the bad influences that watching TV has on children. CIf you walk slowly through downtown Helsinki(赫尔辛基)during the day, taking in the splendid 19th century buildings, white boats and noise of passing trams(有轨电车), you will start to understand why it is called a city of two colors: white and blue. The sea is always present in Helsinki. When you take a walk over the great open space of the central square, you will hear seabirds screaming. When you take the tram, suddenly and unexpectedly, you are faced with a calm, shining blue sea. You may notice that people in Helsinki do not rush about as in other cities. Instead, they walk along the roads, politely letting other people by.A usual way to see Helsinki for the first time is to start out by the boats. You will walk by the elderly women selling fish and vegetables in the market square and find yourself in front of a beautiful park. You may enjoy a pleasant walk in the park for a few hours and then take the tram. Trams are the perfect way to get around in Helsinki. Watching the old houses, parks, theatres, churches, shops, restaurants and people in the streets, you may have a slightly sad film feeling to it.The pale summer nights are another wonder in the city. Following the waterfront(滨水区)of the city after sunset, you couldnt help stopping and listening to the sweet silence, interrupted only by the screaming seabirds and leaving fishing boats. However, in some way. Helsinki is also the most modern city in northern Europe. You will surely want to visit the white Glass Palace, the modern art museum, and all those extremely popular cafes and design stores.59. Helsinki is called a city of two colors mainly because of the colors of its _.A. 19th century buildings, boats and parksB. 19th century buildings, boats and seabirdsC. old houses, parks and tramsD. old buildings, boats and the sea60. The best way to see most of Helsinki is to go _.A. by boatB. by busC. by tramD. on foot61. The 19th century buildings, the white Glass Palace, popular cafes and design shops in Helsinki all show that Helsinki is _.A. both historical and modernB. both quiet and noisyC. both splendid and traditionalD. both old and new62. This passage is most likely to be found in _.A. a travel magazineB. a geography textbookC. a research reportD. a story-book DIf English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Havent you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “ Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and thirty-four. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.63.The main subject talked about in this passage is _.A. science on learning a second language B. mans ability of learning a second languageC. that language can help brain power D. language learning and maths study64. The underlined word “bilingual” probably means _.A. a researcher on language learning B. a secon
