As we came to the Pont Alexander , the taxi slowed down, for the traffic light was red against us, and then, without stopping, we sailed through the red light in a sudden burst of speed. The same performance was repeated at the Alma Bridge. As I paid the driver, I asked him why he had driven through two red lights. “You ought to be ashamed of yourself, a driver like you, breaking the law and endangering your life that way,” I protested. He looked at me, astonished. “Ashamed of myself? Why, Im proud of myself. I am a law-obeying citizen and have no desire to get killed either.” He cut me off. “What did I do? I went through a red light. Well, did you ever stop to consider what a red light is, what it means?” “Certainly,” I replied. “Its a stop signal and means that traffic is rolling in the opposite direction.” “Half-right,” said the driver, “but incomplete. It is only an automatic signal. And it does not mean that there is cross traffic. I slowed down at the light, looked carefully to the right and to the left. Not another car on the streets at this hour. Well, then! Should I stop like a dumb animal because a brainless machine turns red every 40 seconds? No, Monsieur. I am a man, not a machine. I have eyes and a brain and judgment, given to me by God. Ashamed of myself, you say?” Is this bad or good? Speaking honestly, I am no longer sure. I never doubted that it was wrong to drive through a red light. After more than a decade of life in Paris, however, I find my old Anglo-Saxon standards somewhat shaken. I still think it is wrong to drive through a stop signal, except possibly very late at night, after having carefully checked to make sure there is no cross traffic. After all, I am a man, not a machine.24. According to the first paragraph, the author considered the driver _.A. brave B. risk-taking C. exciting D. law-obeying25. Explaining the emotional divorce that occurs between the husband and wife, Dr Al Mehrazi, Chairman of the Advisory Board of Family, said, “Emotional divorce means the relationship persists but the emotions die out and there are no feelings any more. Its as if the father tries to punish the mother for that child. As a result, it can lead to a breakdown of the family and the mother then bears the burden of the special needs child. But sometimes the mother would also abandon her special needs child and focus on her healthy children. Many mothers try to keep the care of the special needs child in the care of the housemaids with no training.” Many families also have a very negative attitude toward having a special needs child, mainly because of the stigma it receives from society. As a result, they generally want to hide the fact that they have a special needs child. This often leads to abandoning or giving very little attention to the special needs child. “This is a challenge in front of us and we need to change this. We need to develop programmes, we need qualified people to work in this field in terms of guidance in helping these families, and we have to adopt clear approaches and methods dealing with conflicts within the family. We cant let that child be a victim or a source of suffering and divorce, but would like the family to look at the child as a blessing from the heavens.” said Dr Al Mehrazi. Special needs people themselves also have a lot to offer, and in some cases have represented and done more for the UAE than people without disabilities. Special needs people have great power. Some special needs people from the UAE have raised the flag of this country more than some able-bodied people. Special needs people arent miserable people.28. The underlined word “persists” in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to “_”. A. changes B. stops C. improves D. continues29. Which of the following words can best describe most parents feeling about having a special needs child? A. Ashamed. B. Guilty. C. Regretful. D. Scared.30. In Dr Al Mehrazis opinion, _. A. special needs children help strengthen a familyB. special needs children are a mistake of the heavens C. families with special needs children need professional guidance D. most mothers take care of their special needs children themselves31. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that _. A. special needs people are a symbol of the UAE B. people with special needs should learn to contribute C. having special needs doesnt necessarily mean inability D. the disabled contribute more to the UAE than normal peopleDSometimes ideas do not appear when you are concentrating your attention and mysteriously appear when you are not. Modern science recognizes this as a result of incuhating(酝酿)the problem in your subconscious(潜意识)yet cant account for why it occurs. When you quit thinking about a subject and decide to forget it, your subconscious mind doesnt quit working Your thoughts keep making associations. This is why youve experienced suddenly remembering names, getting solutions to problems youve forgotten about, and ideas out of the blue when you are relaxing and not thinking about any particular thing. You may try solving a problem with your subconscious mind by writing a letter to it. Now let go of the problem. Dont work on it. Forget it. Do something else. This is the incubation stage when much of what goes on occurs outside your focused awareness, in your unconscious. Open the letter in two days. The answer might magically pop into your mind. An advertising agency was under pressure to come up with a marketing campaign. Bert, the creative director, wrote the following letter which he addressed to his Subconscious mind. Secret Expert, I need to come up with a new marketing program to introduce a new season of television shows. Im interested in some kind of campaign that will capture the audiences attention more than one time. Is there something people need that we can advertise on? What kind of products, foods and services should we investigate? I need your idea about a fresh approach to advertising. Thanks, Bert Bert mailed the letter to himself and when he read what he had written, he got his brainstorm, which was to advertise on “eggs”. Somehow an association between “foods”, “need” and “fresh approach” inspired the thought of using “fresh eggs to advertise.” He arranged to put the ad for the television shows on eggssome thirty million. The consumers look at a single egg at least a few times, when they buy the eggs at the store, when they transfer them to the refrigerator, and when they crack them open. Its unlike any other ad medium in the world, because youre looking at it while you are using it.32. You remember names though you are not thinking about them because your subconscious mind _. Watch your posture(姿势)and body language. The way you look at the speaker, or the way you stand or sit, makes a huge difference. The right listening posture not only improves our ability to concentrate, it communicates that we are listening openly and attentively, and puts the other person at ease.Be patient. Not everyone is a gifted speaker. Some people take longer to find the right word, to make a point or clarify an issue. 38 If necessary, ask the speaker to say more, give an example, or explain further. It will help him/her speak more precisely and it will help you hear and understand more accurately. 39 If what someone is saying creates an emotional response in you, make an extra effort to listen carefully, with attention to the full meaning of the words. When were angry, frightened or upset, we often miss critical parts of what is being said. Hold your fire.Dont jump to conclusions, or launch immediately into an opinion, defense or argument. _40_ If you respond in a way that makes the other person defensive, even if you “win” the argument, you may lose something far more valuable.A.
