Money was tight that year and Tobys parents had told him they would not be able to afford a holiday. Instead of dreaming about foreign travel, he had been reading a book, Letter to New Zealand, where the author explains what happens in an envelopes journey from England to the other side of the world. As they neared their house, Toby asked his mum, Sabine, if he could write a letter to New Zealand. After a few more steps, he was struck by an even better idea. “Can I write a letter to every country in the world?” Sabine says she often wonders what would have happened if she had replied differently that day. “It was just one of those typical questions that five-year-old have,” she says. “If he had asked me in the evening when I was tired, I might have refused. But as parents you realize theres a lot of power in just allowing kids to have a go. Also, it seemed a nice way to do some armchair exploration. So I told him” Lets see how far you get.” The answer was very far indeed. Toby has since written and posted letters to all 193 UN member states, as well as numerous other bad-conditioned areas with comforting ones.To date he has written 681 lettersthe best of which have been selected to appear in a new book called Dear World, How Are You? - although so productive is Toby pen that the number will have risen by the time you read this. “Writing these letters has made me realize that the world isnt actually all that big,” he says with a grin. In the future, part of him would like to be a musical director to turn his beloved Star Wars into a ballet. Of course, he also hopes to travel the globe in person to see some of the countries where his letters have ended up. “Were so lucky to have this wonderful world, and I hope we can live on planet Earth in peace.”21Why did Toby want to write letters to other countries?A. He was good at writing.B. He got inspired by a book.C. He was eager to go abroad.D. He wanted others to help his family.22From Tobys mothers words, we know that at first_.A. she got tired of her sons request B. she believed her son would succeedC. she thought her sons idea was of no valueD. she thought she should give her son a try23Whats the influence of writing letters to Toby?A. He has to put his letters into a book.B. He understands more about the world.C. He becomes productive in writing stories.D. He has traveled to 193 UN number states.24How can we describe Toby?A. Clever and persistent.B. Brave and strong-willed.C. Ambitious and kind-hearted.D. Hardworking and humorous.B For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner. Like a border conflict between neighboring countries, the parent-teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I control and what you do? Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. In part, this is because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for starting it. From the parents point of view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents complete unreasonableness. And of course, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except oppositely. Both feel trapped. In this article, Ill describe three no-win situations that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap. The first no-win situation is quarrel on unimportant things. Examples include the color of the teens hair, the cleanness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the childs failure to eat a good breakfast before school, or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends. Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong. Third, needing to be right. It doesnt matter what the topic ispolitics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an eggthe point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authoritysomeone who actually knows somethingand therefore to command respect. Unfortunately, as long as parents and teens continue to assume that they know more than the other, theyll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress. 25. Why does the author compare the parent teen war to a border conflict? A. Both can continue for generations. B. Both are about where to draw the line. C. Neither has any clear winner. D. Neither can be put to an end. 26. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean? A. The teens blame their parents for starting the conflict. B. The teens agree with their parents on the cause of the conflict. C. The teens accuse their parents of misleading them. D. The teens tend to have a full understanding of their parents. 27. What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows? A. Causes for the parent-teen conflicts B. Examples of the parent-teen war C. Solutions for the parent-teen problems D. Future of the parent-teen relationshipC Have you ever thought to be a businessman or do you think it is very difficult? Frank Woolworth was born in Rodman, New York, in 1852. His family were very poor farmers, and there was never enough to eat. Frank decided he did not want to be a farmer. He took a short business course, and went to work as a salesman in a large city.Woolworth realized he had a natural skill for showing goods to attract peoples interest, but he soon learned something more important. One day his boss told him to sell some odds and ends (小商品 ) for as much as he could get. Frank put all these things on one table with a sign which said FIVE CENTS EACH. People fought and pushed to buy the things and the table was soon cleared.Soon afterwards, Woolworth opened his own store, selling goods at five and ten cents. But he had another lesson to learn before he became successful. That is, if you want to make money by selling low-price goods, you have to buy them in large quantities directly from the factories. Once, for example, Woolworth went to Germany and placed an order for knives. The order was so large that the factory had to keep running 24 hours a day for a whole year. In this way, the price of the knives was cut down by half.By 1919, Woolworth had over 1000 stores in the US and Canada, and opened his first store in London. He made many millions and his name became famous throughout the world. He always run his business according to strict rules, of which the most important was: “ THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT.”28. Frank sold the odds and ends quickly because _. A. the sign he put on the table was well designed B. he cut down the price by half C. he had put the goods on a table in a very nice way D. he knew how to get people to buy his goods30. The price of the knives was cut down by half because _. A. the factory workers worked 24 hours a day B. the knives were made in Germany, where labour (劳动力) was cheap C. knives were ordered in large quantities directly from the factory D. the knives were produced in one factory31. _ make Woolworth a world-famous man. A. The low price of the goods he sold B. His business skills and his wealth C. His trip to Germany and his huge order of knives D. His natural skill for showing things32. The belief that: “The customer is always right” suggests that _. A. stores should do their best to meet the customers needs if they want to be successful B. if you want to succeed, the rule is the only way C. stores must always follow the customers orders if they want to make more money D. whenever there is a quarrel between the customer and shop assistant, the customers are always rightD Cancer is a terrible disease. Every year in the UK, more than 330,000 people get cancer, and doctors usually use a kind of therapy called radiotherapy to treat people. This treatment uses high energy X-rays to destroy the disease, but the effects of treatment can be nearly as bad as the cancer. As the X-rays destroy the cancer cells, they also damage healthy cells that are next to them. Its like using a shotgun to kill an insect. When really important parts of a persons body are hurt by the X-ray energy, it can have very bad results. It can also make more cancer grow in the damaged places in the future. A new therapy that uses protons(质子) instead of X-ray energy could be the answer to the problem. In a project called PRaVDA, scientists from the UK and South Africa are working to this. If X-ray energy is like a shotgun, then protons can work more like a laser. Scientists can make protons travel through someones body without hurting them, and only damage the cancer. The PRaVDA scientists use computers to make a 3-D model of the cancer cells to make sure the protons go to the right places. “Its more accurate,” said Michaela Esposito, PhD, from the University of Lincoln. Building this technology was very difficult, though. Professor Nigel Allinson from the University of Lincoln, the project leader, has put together a team of many different kinds of scientists with different skills. Those skills were all needed to make what he calls “one of the most complex” medical machines ever. Its also 10 times more expensive than X-ray radiotherapy. Even so, Allinson believes that most cancer treatment will be done by protons in the future. “I think it will improve the quality of life of many cancer patients,” he says.33What point does the first paragraph make?A. Cancer is a really terrible disease.B. Lots of people get cancer every year in the UK.C. Radiotherapy isnt a perfect way to cure cancer.D. Radiotherapy is a commonly used therapy against cancer.34According to Professor Allinson, the new therapy .A. will enable cancer patients to enjoy a better lifeB. will cure most cancers in the futureC. will ensure that cancer patients live longerD. will replace radiotherapy completely35 What can be inferred from the text?A. Science and technology are a double-edged sword.B. Not every cancer patient will be able to afford proton therapy.C. Radiotherapy is completely the wrong way to cure cancer.D. The complex medical machine mentioned will soon be put into use.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Nowadays parents and their children are spending less and less time communicating with each other. 36 .
